A Fatal Obsession was filmed through a record temperature blizzard which transformed into a heavy rain storm in the first week and a half of January 2014 in Mystic, CT. The crew was nearly stranded at the first location during a pre-lighting on January 2nd. Temperatures during shooting reached -33 degrees below freezing.
A Fatal Obsession was shot in just 12 days at a breakneck pace. Department heads were often only capable of sleeping for a couple of hours. While shooting the climatic barn scene, the cinematographer literally fell (into a pile of cut wood) asleep while camera operating. The shot was used in the final cut.
The actress Remington Moses, who played the daughter of actress Tracy Nelson and bares a striking resemblance to her, is in fact the real life daughter of Nelson.
The film was shot by film school Juniors from The School of Visual Arts during winter break as a personal project unrelated to their classes. Upon returning to school with a feature film, the director and cinematographer were both awarded C- grades by their production teacher.
Due to a major blizzard, more than one picture vehicle in the film was rendered unusable to continue shooting, and a key actress was stranded at a Detroit airport and had to be recast the day before her scene.
