'Hijack 1971' is a fact-based story of a pilot's heroic actions during a hijacking.
In 1968, a South Korean passenger aircraft was hijacked and flown to North Korea. Only 39 of the 50 passengers were repatriated, and the hijacker received a big sum of money for the plane. In 1971, the hijacker's brother, 22-year old Yong-dae, hijacks a plane and forces them to fly to North Korea.
With the pilot injured and blinded, First Officer Tae-in takes over the ranks as pilot. Armed with hand grenades, sole hijacker Yong-dae has the upper hand, with the passengers reeling in fear. Now, Tae-in and the passengers must devise a plan before reaching North Korea, in fear that they might follow the same fate as the passengers of the 1968 hijacked plane.
The film offers plenty of drama, action and suspense and is guaranteed to have you on the edge of your seat for its entire runtime.

Inspired by the Korean Air F27 hijacking unfold on the 23 january 1971, the movie defenitely keep a tension during most of the acts.
The casting is on the spot and the performances are quite good.
However, as specified at the beginning of the movie, this is freely inspired by the event and lots of sequences are made only for dramatic purposes. The problem with that is the numerous irrational reactions of the passengers wich will probably make you wonder why people are reacting like that.
But the real major problem of this movie, in my opinion, and I noticed that this is often the case with movies produce by Sony, is the CGI.
All the planes shots looks way to fake, especially when you have in mind the Top Gun Maverick shots in mind. I saw more realistic videos from people who play Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 maxout in 8K with mods.
Not an awful movie, but could have been way better.

Excellent hijack movie, very well made and well scripted. The plot was based on actual events, though the beginning was a little slow but it ended up with great thrill and intensity. Honestly this is one of the best Korean movies that one wouldn't regret seeing at the cinema, what I like about the movie is its tightly packed without much long drag and unrelated sidelines, unlike a lot of overrated boring flicks flooded with fake reviews and ratings. The actors' were all well acted and the setups were decent. The only issue is the CGI of the planes isn't at the highest quality that looked kind of fake which can be a bit more realistic, and some of the CG shots were a little too fast, but those were only minor flaws that didn't affect the overall integrity.
What to say other than this is a solid movie with a solid plot and solid CGI and solid acting. However, for a Korean film, I thought it fell short in comparison to some of the greats. I mean, not every movie would be great, but Koreans are exceptional with the balance of comedy and tragedy. Many Korean movies really move the emotions, having you laugh in tears in the beginning and sobbing uncontrollably in the end.
The reason a lot of Korean films are losing their strength is because they're trying too hard to copy Hollywood. This film would be one of those and so the story seems generic and the dialogues just move the story along without making any real impact. As such the movie doesn't leave much of an impression.
I think a better writer could've made this movie great by going back to what they do best, comedy and tragedy.
6/10.

This movie made me write my first IMDb review, it's THAT GOOD yall.
I really didn't expect anything coming to see it at the cinema. It's honestly one of the best Korean movies I've seen in my entire life. The acting is out of this world, the movie is very immersive & thrilling, beside the main character's', I got to see the side characters's emotions as well which is very rare. It's so well executed and the fact that it's based on a true story blew my mind. I don't know what else to say, just go see it. Best plane hijacking movie ever. Also it's emotional, and it hits deep, prepare to feel the characters' pains as well.

Beware: this movie needs some time to get started and even the actual plane hijacking at first looks rather lame and uneventful, but this movie has a slow build up in suspsense and your patience willl be rewarded with a dramatic action packed final.
The good: leave it to the South Koreans to deliver another solid crime drama, they are masters at incorporating action AND drama and they pulll it off again.
Any bad? Dont expect fireworks, this is NOT a gungho action movie, but firstmost a DRAMA with really solid leading acting performances.
Based on a true story, which makes it even more impressive to watch...

Who knew? Before Captain "Sully" made his miracle emergency landing on the Hudson Bay, in New York in 2009, a Korean pilot accomplished an equally harrowing feat on the other side of the globe decades earlier. I caught this movie by accident and didn't know what to expect. Was very pleasantly surprised. The all-Korean cast did a great job of conveying the true story of a hijacked plane that was ordered to fly to communist North Korea, re-routing the frightened passengers off their scheduled flight to Seoul. The story begins with a rookie, first officer who has been outcast among his fellow pilots for refuting to follow orders earlier when a plane had been hijacked to North Korea, and he was ordered to shoot one of the plane's engines to disable the plane and stop it from reaching the communist border. Those passengers were hijacked to North Korea in 1969, detained for months and released to South Korea where they were ostracized and treated as spies in their own communities. The pilots, and crew of that plane were never returned to South Korea because they had special skills and training. Although the rookie first officer has completed his training, he has never been allowed to do a solo landing due to the other pilots' dislike and mistrust of him. On this day in January 1971, the captain tells him he wants him to do the landing and he is very pleased that he will finally get an opportunity. However, he does not know that this will be a very memorable day for a number of reasons. A bitter young man has made his way on the plane with several bombs that he uses to blow a hole in the plane and threaten the frightened passengers. The hijacker demands that the pilot and first officer take him to North Korea. Over the course of the movie, we see some amazing flying stunts as the rookie officer tries to outmaneuver the vicious hijacker who unleashes his violence on both the passengers, crew and first officer and captain. At the same time, the Air Force has launched two fighter planes and ordered them to shoot the planes engines to disable it from crossing the border. North Korea has also launched its fighter jets. This movie pulls all of the right strings. It is action packed, and I certainly shed a tear or two when I realized it was a true story. Definitely stay for the closing shots and credits. Very moving.

From sk cimes another grttttt movie action suspense and awe and definitely have tears in your eyes by the end
Amazing flight science put maverick to shame
In fact maverick who?
Just watch it really amazed at how it started and escalated and to the end I won't spoil ending but it's a very good movie Shame that these sk movies hardly get shown in U. K. apart from capital city cinemas Should be on at every cinema Shows you the depth the courage of these people from Korea and even thou you see why the hijacker did what he did it does not make him a hero as Hollywood would It's shows end of the day it's the persons choices even if bullied there is still no need to be evil. Anyway had to go on a big since know Amazon won't let you review unless it's 600 words plus. Which is daft usually I don't bother no more but for this I had too.

It's been a long time since I last felt this good when going to a cinema. I had doubts at first because this movie didn't have that much hype on the internet. Also, there are few screening time slots available. Then I came across some comments that said this movie was more worth watching than Project Silent, so I was curious. I went to check the reviews on IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes. Surprisingly, this movie got less number of reviews, but more positive reactions. I'm glad that I went to watch it, and even watched it twice within a day. It's just that good. This movie makes your heart sob for some people, some in misery, some very noble.

This movie made me write my first review in IMDB
It was one of the best movies I've ever seen in this kind of storyline and I can undoubtably say you will not regret watching it
You may think it's impossible but at the end you understand that even for one second you didn't take your eyes off the screen.
Every detail has been depicted completely every single actor/actress even the passenger are chosen wisely.
This movie will make you think of the reason for all the things he done and somehow give him the right for being angry and hatful for his own country at the same time you think this is not correct nether the Korea government's neglect nor his work But still this inadvertence is happening in the korea.
Hope everyone see this movie and I'm sure you will absolutely enjoy it.

How 'Hijack 1971' builds the tension is freaking crazy. It is gradual and follows a step-by-step manual, and it makes sure that each step is impactful enough. I don't think I've watched this quality of action sequences happening in planes in Korean movies. The CGI effect is satisfactory as well. There are some weaknesses, but they are not about technology itself, but how the director uses it is too outdated. Slow motion right after the bomb exploded is just too cliche and even cringy. Also, there are some tear-jerking soap opera moments that hinders the focus of the audience because the director intends to focus not only on action but also on the story of each character. Even so, I get the intention, and I'm glad that 'Hijack 1971' is not about CGI pew-pew. Because of that story, the movie brings more reality and thus tension and thrill in the end.

The film is immersive and exhilarating, and I was able to witness the feelings of the side characters, which is really rare. It's one of the best Korean movies I've ever seen. It's brilliantly executed, and the fact that it's based on a genuine tale astounded me.
It's one of those very, very rare movies where you sympathize and understand everyone's point of view in what they do, despite whether what they do is good or bad; even the villain (the killer), you can understand his point of view and the reasons for what he does (you can identify a little via his bad past, but you hate the results intensely); they don't focus only on the hero's backstory, which is great.
This is also dramatic and hits close to home; expect to experience the characters' pain as well.
