Right, well the movie's cover and title was enough to make me stop and take notice of this movie. Sure, I had never heard about this movie from director Bruce Wemple, so I didn't know what I was in for. But it being a horror movie that I hadn't already seen was more than sufficient to make me sit down and give it a go.
Writers Bruce Wemple and LeJon Woods put together a rather weak storyline that didn't prove neither overly entertaining nor scary. So sitting through 88 minutes of this movie was a bit of a struggle. I must admit that I had hoped for a bit more, given the movie's cover.
I wasn't familiar with the cast ensemble in the movie, but it should be said that while the storyline was rubbish, then the acting performances were actually fair.
Not a particularly great horror movie, nor a movie that will ever grace my screen a second time, because it was boring enough sitting through it the first time.
Visually then "The Hangman" didn't impress either. The movie made use of very little special effects. And as for the creature seen on the movie's cover, well don't get your hopes up, as it is hardly in the movie at all.
The movie's cover was actually the best part about the entire ordeal.
If you enjoy horror movies, I wouldn't recommend you to waste 88 minutes on watching this 2024 movie from director Bruce Wemple.
My rating of "The Hangman" lands on a very generous three out of ten stars.

This movie can't decided what it is about. And it throws every kitchen sink into the toilet and flushes the toilet and the kitchen sinks all swirl in the bowl and get jammed and the plumber that comes to fix this cinematic mess of a backed-up sewer movie isn't very good with plumbing or film-making.
The main conceit is that a dad and son go camping in the worst possible place and run into the worst possible people with the worst beliefs, side hustles and folklore imaginable.
The other open premise of the movie is that there is a backwoods cult of lowlifes worshiping a demon that hangs people for their sins. And the rest of the plot points involving said demon make no sense in a fairly tone-deaf manner what with racial makeup of the two leads.
Sometimes the movie is dead serious about itself. Other times it is trying to play for laughs. It unsuccessfully tries to be supernatural horror, an overwrought social drama and a father/son buddy comedy.
But it is mostly annoying. And nothing about it is cohesive or interesting.

Besides a few dead bodies and some screaming, there is nothing about this that resembles a horror movie. The overt racial undertones really destroy the story, and there's nothing subtle about it. All white people bad - got it.
The acting is awful, the dialogue is laughable - a son asks his widower father if he's gay because he's not dating(?)The accents are inconsistent and nonsensical. And by the way, I can't remember one scene or sequence in the movie that actually made me feel scared, suspenseful, or care about any of the characters at all.
Honestly the whole insane racism ala Appalachia theme in movies is really tired. Horrible movie. Do not watch.

Written and starring the same person? Recipe for failure. It's very rare someone in this field can do more than one function. Here we have the writer also playing the main character. Well he can't act. At least not in this film. And the story was all over the place and garbage, so clearly he can't write either. And that seems to be a common theme when people try to do too much in show business.
But the movie, well it isn't good. A black man and his son going to the Appalachian for camping? Pause. We not doing that. First off, camping is not one of our go to activities. Second, we know better than to go out to racism, the place. The cringy bonding in the beginning should've told me turn this movie off. But then we meet the racist locals. Sigh. This has been done to death. It's played out. Then there's this hangman. It was more like an after thought. If they had focused more on that and the cult, and cut out the racism stuff, which added nothing, then maybe this could've been a 3 star instead of 1.

Leon is taking his son Jesse on a camping trip in West Virginia. He wakes up next morning to find his son missing. He navigates a racist local population and a demonic presence killing his victims with his ropes.
I am fine with a low budget Deliverance style trip in hillbilly country. That part actually works at a low budget level. The lead is a functional average looking dad. The movie struggles when it tries to do high intensity supernatural visuals. They don't have the budget or the camera skills to do it right. It looks cheap and not even in a fun camp way. One understands the limitations.

Every decision made by the writers, director, camera operators, actors and their characters was the worst possible decision. It was so bad in every way possible. It's like they asked an improv audience to suggest a genre, sub genre, tone, and a new character to introduce for 3 acts and they just put all of it together to make a mashup of all the ideas.
Or maybe two interns carrying two separate scripts were rushing down a hall and ran into each other, dropping the stacks of papers and when they picked all of the pages up, they had mixed both scripts together and this was the one that got produced.

A father and son leon and jesse are going camping. Jesse goes missing in the morning and while leon looks for him he slowly starts to relise things. Though this movie has segments that feel like they are just thrown together. Which includes leon stumbling upon a man that has a young woman captvie. And two rasist people in a pickup. The hangmans design is good but not overally scary. A noose as a weapon was used creativly here though. I do feel parts of this film were missing too as some of the edots made me feel like it skipped plot points. The hangman is a decent effort but not a great horror overall.

This is a truly terrible film. The acting is bad the story is bad, the audio is sometime out of sync with characters speech.
The main character is useless all in all a bad film. Do not waste your time with this.
The story does not make sense, I found myself losing track initially then being incredibly bored and the mind wondering, the film does not capture you/ keep you hooked. It is all in all a really terrible film.
The acting is ridiculous, I would strongly advise people to watch a different film.
I cannot understand how such a bad film has 4/5 stars on amazon reviews. It should be noted i don't often leave reviews for films, but this was just so terribly I had to worn others!

I liked this movie after watching it .A pretty decent effort as far as i was concerned .Should have shown more of the hangman though and it could have been a bit more scarier. The only thing i thought was maybe it was a bit unrealistic as to the point of a black man and his son going on a camping trip out in the woods being isolated in rural Virginia .Me personally i would not be doing something like that Just asking to get strung up by the local hillbillies and mountain people . I found the father character a bit irritating though in some parts he was acting like a scared rabbit .But over all i liked it. It was farely decent.

When it comes to modest budget VOD horror flicks, Dread knows its audience. Get a few psychotic characters, plug in some red LEDs, build a fire, throw around a little karo-red blood, and everyone has a screaming good time. Dread's latest VOD release, The Hangman, fulfills all these requirements - minimally. What makes The Hangman at all watchable is the clever crime drama centering on a missing teen that easily slips in-between the pseudo-screams.
While the plight of the father and son deepens the A-story, the demonic tale of the Hangman is abruptly forgotten. When the supernatural menace eventually returns, the story of the Hangman's murderous quest becomes not only confusingly circular but almost completely unnecessary. In fact, The Hangman lacks any true genre scares and possesses startling sparse on-screen violence. The eponymous villain barely lives up to his name, settling instead to casting small nooses for binding people down as if he was a not-so-friendly Appalachian neighborhood web-slinger.
Hardcore horror fans might disagree.
The Hangman apologetically fits within the genre and strangles out the minimally-appropriate material with its very last breath while ignoring the true horror of scary Appalachian drug dealers.

This was a great movie but lemon woods was the only actor with talent. He gave this movie, really great in this part but wished othersbeside the character Thomas? Needed some umph. The other cast members didn't match his level
of of acting. A minor let down but Lejon made this! Thanks Lejon Woods for making this film awesome! I love scary movies and the Appalachian mountains so it was cool to see and yes it is kinda scary in that area . I have met some locals who seem to close to some of these characters! That's why you should always have a plan for all situations when going there. Lol shout out to lejon woods!

This is a new age B horror-esque comical film. I thoroughly enjoyed it. If you like Bruce Campbell or Raimi brothers films you will love this. If you are looking for terror and edge of your seat suspense. This isn't the movie for you. It is a well produced film that knows what it is, and I loved almost every second of it. Very few complaints. I only really wish the writing would have gone either more comical or more serious. Decent on both sides, but great in neither with solid one liners. If you go in knowing this is a solid B film you will enjoy. The lead guy needs to work with Campbell and take the torch because I really liked his presence.

7 stars just for Lindsey. 3 stars for the movie, itself. So many missed opportunities and plot holes, it could of been so much better. The scenery, Lindsey and the Hangman wasn't shown enough and I needed more from all 3. The acting, plot, sound effects (guns & grenades) storyline and the script fell way, beyond short. Yes, the movie had its moments, but not enough to be remembered nor recommend. The Hangman makeup was perfect, excally like the cover, too bad the director didn't focus on more jump scares, I promise it would of help carry the movie. *Side note - Lindsey, if you're reading this, I promise to fulfill that raincheck my boy didn't bother to cash. Call me....

I've seen many horrors in my lifetime, some ok and most pretty bad, but this is up there with the worst... I have no idea how this has even made it onto Amazon but I think it needs to be taken down. It's all over the place, has no progression, just jumps straight into the "action" and that may sound like a good thing but it really isn't. If you watch the trailer before you waste your time, you'll realise that Bruce wemple can't even understand what a trailer is meant to be, never mind directing a movie, clearly someone with money and no clue how to direct. If you ever see this guys name as the director of the movie your about to watch, just skip and move on because it's clueless direction from start to finish. What a joke, should be under the comedy genre.
