Ann Hui’s The Golden Era continued its awards sweep at the Hong Kong Film Awards on Sunday night, winning five prizes including best film and best director.

The biopic of writer Xiao Hong also won best cinematography, best art direction and best costume and make-up. It recently won best director and best supporting actor at the Asian Film Awards in Macau.

Overheard 3 was also a multiple winner at the Hong Kong Film Awards, clinching best actor for Lau Ching-wan, best supporting actor for Kenneth Tsang and best screenplay for Alan Mak and Felix Chong’s script.

Best actress went to Vicky Zhao Wei for Peter Ho-sun Chan’s child abduction drama Dearest, while Ivana Wong picked up both best supporting actress and best new performer for her role in comedy Golden Chickensss.

The 34th Hong Kong Film Awards have named Ann Hui's epic drama The Golden Era Best Film of the year, with Hui taking the Best Director prize. Ann Hui’s The Golden Era leads the pack at the 9th Asian Film Awards with five nominations - but not one for best picture.

The life story of Xiao Hong, one of China’s most famous essayists and novelists, has secured nominations for best director, best actress (Tang Wei), best supporting actor (Wang Zhiwen), best screenwriter (Li Qiang) and best editor (Kwong Chi-leung, Manda Wai).

Best film nominations included Berlinale 2014 Golden Bear winner Black Coal Thin Ice and Blind Massage, which both secured four nominations each, as well as HaiderHill Of Freedom, The Light Shines Only There and Korean box office hit Ode To My Father.

Jiang Wen’s Gone With The Bullets secured four nominations in the technical cateogies.

Fumi Nikaido will receive the inaugural Screen International Rising Star Award at the 13th New York Asian Film Festival (Nyaff), set to run from June 27-July 14.

The festival will open with the international premiere of Alan Mak and Felix Chong’s crime thriller Overheard 3 and close with the North American premiere of Park Chan-kyong’s documentary Manshin: Ten Thousand Spirits.

The previously announced North American premiere of Umin Boya’s period baseball epic Kano is the Centerpiece Presentation.

Taiwan’s Jimmy Wong Yu will collect the 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award, while the Star Asia Award will go to Hong Kong’s Sandra Ng and South Korea’s Sol Kyung-gu.

The roster features a spotlight on local Hong Kong cinema called Hong Kong Forever!, a Sir Run Run Shaw Tribute and a focus on South Korean actor Lee Jung-jae.

Any fan of Asian cinema who lives anywhere near New York City probably already knows about the annual event that brings some of the biggest, best and often weirdest movies from all across Asia to packed houses of enthusiastic fans as the New York Asian Film Festival (Nyaff) has grown from a small cult following that would attend the festival at the Anthology Film Archives to a major event held in partnership with the Film Society of Lincoln Center and the Japan Society's annual Japan Cuts.

The Film Society of Lincoln Center, in collaboration with Subway Cinema and the Japan Society, have announced the full lineup for the 2014 New York Asian Film Festival (Nyaff). The Hong Kong thriller "Overheard 3," directed by Alex Mak and Felix Chong will open the festival.  The festival will show 60 feature films, including one international premiere, 20 North American premieres, six U.S. premieres. Eleven more films will make their New York debuts.  Some of the highlights to look forward to include the mystical "Manshin: Ten Thousand Spirits," directed by Park Chan-kyung, Umin Boya's sports drama "Kano," Lou Ye's Berlinale Golden Bear contender "Blind Massage" and Kazuaki Kumakiri's "My Man."  In addition to the films, Nyaff will honor Jimmy Wong Yu, a Taiwanese actor who is considered a major player in establishing what we know as the modern kung-fu movie genre, with their Star Asia Lifetime Achievement Award. Other awards will go out.

Overheard 3 is the latest thriller from Alan Mak and Felix Chong, the directing duo that brought us the first two Overheard films and (together with Andrew Lau) the Infernal Affairs trilogy. Like the previous two films in the franchise, Overheard 3 again stars Lau Ching Wan, Louis Koo and Daniel Wu. Exclusive: Sing Choong Foo’s animation features voice talents of Zhang Ziyi and Wang Leehom.

Hong Kong-based Distribution Workshop has picked up international rights to animated feature Where’s The Dragon, directed by Sing Choong Foo.

The project has attracted major voice talents including Zhang Ziyi (The Grandmaster) and Wang Leehom (Lust, Caution). Currently in post-production, it is being lined up for release in late 2014 or early 2015.

The story follows a ten-year-old girl who teams up with animals from the Chinese Zodiac to search for a lost dragon and save the world from a treacherous conspiracy. Voice cast also includes Michael Wong, Fish Leong and Maggie Chiang.

George Lee and Sew Yee Liew are producing the film through Beijing DeTao Masters Academy and Hong Kong-based Colour Engineering.

Born in Malaysia, Sing has worked on visual effects for Hollywood films including Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2, Men In Black 2 and Beowulf.

Hong Kong-based Distribution Workshop is launching two titles directed by Derek Yee at the upcoming Cannes marche; 3D martial arts action title Sword Master and drama I Am Somebody.

Produced by Bona Film Group and Yee’s Film Unlimited, Sword Master teams Yee with another Hong Kong cinema giant, Tsui Hark, who is acting as producer.

Currently in production at Hengdian World Studios, the film is based on a wuxia novel written by Gu Long about an elite swordsman who is haunted by his skill and forced to fight a challenger who is determined to take his place at all costs.

Lin Gengxin (Young Detective Dee: Rise Of The Sea Dragon) heads the cast as the swordsman. Peter Ho, Jiang Yiyan and Jiang Mengjie also star.

Felix Chong and Alan Mak are getting ready to unleash the third in their Overheard series of audio surveillance thrillers, and have just released these images of their rogues gallery.
