Stray Dogs was the first Tsai Ming Liang work shot on digital video rather than on traditional celluloid film.
Yi Cheng Lee and Yi Chieh Lee are the real-life nephew and niece of Kang-sheng Lee. In the film, they play his son and daughter.
There are many scenes with children and wild dogs in this film. The director Tsai Ming-liang said that you can't shoot too many scenes with them, the secret is just to wait. So many scenes with Yi Cheng Lee and Yi Chieh Lee were "stolen", including the one where the little girl changes her clothes without any shyness. Many of the reactions are the result of natural capture.
The film contains mostly extensive long shots, basically nothing happens dramatically. But, it conveys emotions.
