A Lovely Film

I had the pleasure of watching "Who Speaks for Charlie?" at DIFF Shorts. What a beautiful gem of a film. The filmmaker thoughtfully examines the complexities of living with profound autism, and the fight for Charlie's mother to attain better services and awareness for her son.

The film's opening immediately draws you in, as viewers are thrown into the world of cyber bullying prevalent in the autistic community. The filmmaker's decision to use archival footage throughout the film is a smart stylistic choice, making the audience feel like they are viewing Charlie's life through Eileen's eyes. The film truly feels like a warm hug and a mother's love.

The editing is fast-paced and engaging, making the 17-minute film move along much quicker than most docs of the same length.

Thank you to the filmmaker for shedding light on autism, and the importance of greater awareness for those living specifically with profound autism. This film is an important step in the right direction towards a brighter future for children like Charlie.
