Watched about half of this move and then walked, so maybe during the second half it completely turned around, but I don't think so. And my expectations weren't that high: I was expecting just another typical JCVD movie, but was disappointed badly. Even for a JCVD vehicle the characters were caricatures, and in case of Micheal Youn's character, simply annoying. The acting is flat, the lines delivered like they were red from a teleprompter.
It's trying very hard to be an action comedy and it is failing miserably. The level of comedy would maybe mildly amuse my 5 year old niece at some points, but even that is a maybe. If you want French comedy try a Louis de Funes movie, if you want action watch an older JCVD movie, but this one is best skipped.
In short: it is a waste of time.

Le jardinier (2025), directed by David Charhon, is a political thriller that follows Serge, a man burdened with a state secret, and his family as they find themselves on a government death list. Along with their gardener Leo, they attempt to devise a plan to survive, all while being hunted by forces beyond their control. While the premise offers a thrilling setup full of tension and intrigue, the film struggles to fully capitalize on its potential.
The performances, while competent, don't fully resonate with the stakes of the story. The cast, including the lead actor, delivers their roles effectively, but the emotional depth required to truly engage the audience is lacking. The characters, particularly Serge, feel one-dimensional, and the relationships between them fail to develop in a way that could heighten the emotional impact of their dangerous situation.
The film's pacing is another issue. The suspense builds at a steady pace, but the plot often feels disjointed, as if key moments are rushed or underexplored. The intrigue of the government conspiracy and the tension of the family's survival are present but fail to fully engage the viewer due to the lack of significant twists or character development. The screenplay, written by Charhon, Vincent De Brus, and Sébastien Fechner, keeps the story moving, but it often relies on genre clichés that diminish the film's originality.
Visually, the film has a polished look, but the cinematography lacks the style and energy needed to elevate the suspense. There are moments of tension, but the film doesn't fully lean into its potential for creating an immersive, high-stakes atmosphere. Instead, the tension often fizzles out before reaching a satisfying climax.
While Le jardinier has a strong premise and offers some moments of excitement, its lack of emotional depth and reliance on predictable thriller tropes make it difficult to fully invest in the characters and their journey. It's a film that could have been far more engaging with stronger character development and a more intricate plot.
Rating: 4/10. A tense thriller with a solid premise, but hindered by underdeveloped characters, pacing issues, and a lack of emotional depth.

...it turns out the movie is a mess.
It tries to walk that line between comedy and action but the thing is it's never funny - not once. I mean it, it NEVER has a funny moment. And, as far as the action goes it's pretty geriatric and slowpaced. It's hard to write this but - the action is boring.
I gave it a 3/10 because of JCVD but...I mean...that's being generous.

Why are people giving money to the director David Charhon? Are they suffering from dementia? Have they seen his filmography? This man can't write, can't direct actors or crew, and can't edit. The Gardener manages to be worse than The Last Mercenary (which is already horrible), so congratulations! The cast? A botoxed K1 fighter, three terrible influencers, a rapper... There are fewer real actors in this film than influencers. Isn't that a problem? The direction of these people: zero. Van Damme looks like he's in distress every time he opens his mouth. Either he's unmanageable (in which case, just leave him alone), or someone didn't know how to direct him. Let's stop the carnage. Let's stop funding David Charhon.

Beware folks, beware, this film is a total waste, a comedy, nothing else, not a gritty, bloody, brutal action thriller as you could expect. And the worst of the worst, the most unbearable, the most awful, gruesome element of the whole, is the presence of the horrible, slap head Michael Youn. Each time I tried to watch a movie with the slap head Michael Youn, I left after a few minutes. So, if you did not know the Slap Head Michael Youn, first, you missed nothing, and second, you have to prepare yourself, psychologically, I mean. It will be a shock, far more cruel than a Chinese torture, the absolute sadistic refinement that you may imagine. So, if you really have nothing else to do, escape from this crap at all costs; and choose THE BEE KEEPER or UNDER SIEGE - the Cook - instead THE GARDENER. JCVD is not a deception, he is just himself. No comment. He is not a slap head, he gives slaps....

The movie had potential. Van Dammes very few fights scene and he chase at the end were pretty good. The main guy was annoying. Budget looked decent. Just wish we could get a Van Damme movie with this Budget, more serious, more fight scenes, scenic locations, etc. Comedy is ok if it's done like Jean Claude Van Johnson..loved that serious. Needs a season 2. The movie had potential. Van Dammes very few fights scene and he chase at the end were pretty good. The main guy was annoying. Budget looked decent. JCVD is aging and obviously he can't deliver the action pack movies he once did, but this movie surprised me when it comes to action. There is a fair share and altough some are obviously body doubles well hidden by camera angles and fast cuts (still a lot more bearable than Steven Seagal's last fews), it entertained me well in that departement. The fights are also bloody and violent.
That said, the story and the humor it try to portrait is so ...weird ! French is my first language, but i am from Quebec, so even tough i had no issue understanding everything in the native french language, some of the jokes really didn't land. That said a few did. Got to give credit where credit is due.
I think the major issue is the actor portraying Sergio, the familly dad who is under attack. He is such a caricature i doubt anyone would really behave like this in real life. While a few of his lines or the situations he end up in did land, a lot didn't. And at times i rolled my eyes a bit wanting to yell "Shut the F up !" at him. Maybe it was the goal as it was a bit of an ongoing joke that he talked too much and Van Damme too less.
In conclusion this is basically a french "Die Hard" but almost as a spoof. The story is really just a pitch to have a movie, as the "list" is barely explained beside the minimal stuff to have a movie.
Want to see JCVD as a man in his 70s killing dudes violently with gardener's tools? Then you may enjoy that movie. But if you ain't into the weird French humor you may find the story/characters very unsettling.
Hard to really give a rating to this one. I enjoyed the action, i enjoyed Van Damme, i laugh a few times, but i rolled my eyes a few more. Yeah well 6 out of 10 seem fair.
After Darkness of Men i had very little hope for Van Damme flicks but this one gave me back trust that he can still do entertaining action, even if his age obviously do show.

I don't know what happened in the commenters life, that didn't find this movie any fun or anything of the sorts, but if you can find a discount on humor, i suggest you buy it!!!
JCVD Is to most probably known as an action star, martial artist, but he has made comedy before, and to me, this movie was a sign of that combination, that JCVD still has, he is still in shape, and he can be funny, what's not to like!?
If you're a JCVD fan, then this is definitely one that should entertain you, it has some nice action scenes, lots of violence, some comedy, i really found the references to Rambo quite fun, subtle references, but if you've watched the latest Rambo, you'll easily spot it :)
I'm gonna have to give this a 7 / 10, because i found it pretty entertaining, a little slow start, but then it's quite smooth after that and throughout :)

The gardner is an action packed black comedy following the vein of Tarantino's debut.
This is not Kickboxer but instead a great family movie with a fair amount of self-mockery.
The couple JCVD and Michael Youn works very well under the direction of David Charhon and Matthias Quiviger is hilarious in the role of Esmeralda.
More work could have been done in terms of giving depth to the main characters but overall David Charhon managed to keep the story line fluid.
Don't take the movie at face value and instead enjoy the delirious fun.
As a nostalgic fan of JCVD and an enthusiastic promoter of young talents/new comers I rated this movie a 9.

Excellent comedy packed with action, gore and fun ! Jcvd dominates but the other actors (in particular Youn, Le Banner, Le Breton, Kaaris) are excellent too. Soundtrack is very well chosen, Action scenes are impressive. Several scenes are a nod to great movies, including First Blood. In addition to action and humour, there is also tenderness and emotion. Jcvd plays vey well at this level too. Jcvd and Michael Youn play very well with the protect the baby (another nod to excellent movies where two very different characters are united in protecting a baby girl). Finally some subtle hints of the pros and cons of being on a list... is it a sign that you will get something good ? Or is it because your life will be endangered ?...Must-see movie!

This is farce at its best, hackneyed, disjointed, totally unbelievable but that's its purpose.
A visibly aged JCVD taking on a group of elite forces, this is humor, I laughed with him not at him as I often did at Seagal and Stallone.
Part slapstick, full of cliché, edited abominably, it highlights the absurdity that other action films try unsuccessfully to hide.
I applaud JCVD for his ability to take the "P" out of himself and the whole genera which tries to make the ridiculous in any way believable.
This is the blazing saddles to westerns, the young Frankenstein to horror, with the overtop verve of pulp fiction.
Bravo.
