That is mostly manifesting itself in the death of long-running, high-volume cable shows, which is having serious ramifications for the industry across the pond. Nat Geo’s acquisitions boss has addressed the axing of high-volume fare like Wicked Tuna and Life Below Zero.
With the death of long-running cable dominating chatter at this week’s Content London, Christian Drobnyk said the “economics” of high-volume shows like the exploration of fishermen in Massachusetts needs to be “far more efficient given how much the industry has changed since they were greenlit.”
Drobnyk was addressing the cancelation of Wicked Tuna after 13 seasons and more than 200 episodes, which came over the summer amid a drastic reduction in cable shows across the board and 60 layoffs at Nat Geo. Alaska reality series Life Below Zero is also reported to have been axed after 11 years.
“We need to start to look at how those shows are built and what their price points are,” Drobnyk considered. “Those shows were greenlit when we were a linear-only platform and that world has changed dramatically.

National Geographic’s “Life Below Zero” follows the everyday struggles of people living in the secluded state of Alaska. After 22 seasons on the air, executive producer and showrunner Joe Litzinger jokes, “It’s all Sue, just purely Sue.” He’s referring to one of the show’s biggest stars, Sue Aikens, who joins our panel along with producer Crofton Diack and editor Tanner Roth.
“We are fortunate that we have an incredible cast that hooked viewers from the very beginning,” he continues. “I think everyone wants to spend more time with them, on top of Alaska being an incredible visual. You can watch hours of Alaska footage alone.”
When asked if her love for a secluded lifestyle has been ruined by the show, Aikens responds, “No, I wouldn’t allow that, I’d just lock the door. The palpable amount of respect that the film crew gives me is what they do.

Other series of note this month include the Korean drama Uncle Samsik on May 15.

Before all that though is the real heavy hitter. You can watch Austin Butler’s acclaimed performance as The King in Elvis as early as May 1. But get to it quick before the Baz Luhrmann film departs on...
