The demon from Parker Finn's "Smile" movies has a very peculiar mode of operations. It's largely invisible, and it can induce hallucinations in its chosen hosts. It typically appears to its victims as someone they know, or perhaps a stranger, but always wearing a very creepy smile. For a few weeks, the demon tortures its host with hallucinations, eventually taking over their bodies. Once possessed, the victim themselves would smile horrifyingly, while taking their own life. The self-slaughter is, as the demon dictates, performed in front of a witness. The witness, in seeing a smiling person kill themselves, gives them trauma that allows the demon to pass onto them. The cycle then repeats.
The "Smile" movies are very clearly about the way trauma can be passed from generation to generation, and how violence and self-harm can create a never-ending cycle. Despite the strangeness of the premise, the "Smile" movies are surprisingly scary,...

Robert Pattinson definitely did not want to freestyle-dance for Lynne Ramsay’s “Die, My Love.”
Pattinson told GQ in a video (below) alongside “Mickey 17” writer/director Bong Joon Ho that he almost had a “mental breakdown” amid filming a dance sequence with his co-star Jennifer Lawrence. Pattinson pleaded with Ramsay to have the scene be removed from the script, or be choreographed instead.
“I did this movie with Lynne Ramsay, and she’s a really good dancer. And Jennifer Lawrence is a really good dancer. They just find it so easy. They’re like, ‘Just dance, it’s just music playing, just dance,'” Pattinson said. “I was like, ‘I’m going to have a mental breakdown when this happens. We need to either choreograph it or cut it.’ And they’re like, ‘No, just dance, stop being all freak.’ It came to the day, and I was sweating so much,...

Remakes from foreign-language originals often face difficulties in translating material from one cultural context to another, but seldom has that been so awkward as in “Uppercut,” Torsten Reuther’s Americanized retooling of his 2021 German debut “Leberhaken” (aka “Liver Punch”). What was already a problematically stagey wade into normally action-oriented terrain — the underdog sports drama — gains additional hurdles here from the writer-director’s tin ear for English dialogue, as well as the inexplicable return of a lead actor even less adept in a foreign tongue. Lionsgate is rolling this earnest but unconvincing feature out to limited U.S. theaters as well as digital platforms on Feb. 28.

Exclusive: QC Entertainment, the company behind Get Out and BlacKkKlansman, has completed the Victoria, BC shoot on horror film The Casket Girls with four major additions to the cast: Mike Colter (Evil), Raúl Castillo (Smile 2), Matt Frewer (Perry Mason), and Thomas Lennon (Reno 911!).
As previously announced, Gabrielle Union leads the ensemble. Lennon also co-wrote the screenplay alongside Robert Ben Garant, his partner on Night at the Museum and numerous other projects, with revisions by Keith Cooper (Anything for Jackson) & Justin Dyck (Anything for Jackson), who directed the film.
The Casket Girls is inspired by true events involving a group of young women sent from France to New Orleans to become brides to French colonists in the early 1700s. They arrived with small chests, or “caskets” of their belongings, hence the name given by locals. According to legend, upon the girls’ arrival, the homicide rate in New Orleans rose dramatically,...

She will leave her post as Co-President, Motion Picture Group at Paramount Pictures, where with Michael Ireland she steered the studio’s film slates.
With the impending appointment of Skydance leadership at Paramount Global, I’d heard for some time that the well-regarded Cercek was being courted for a top post at Disney, and I’m told this has now transpired with the full support of Paramount President/CEO Brian Robbins. Ireland will run the division at Paramount.

Ray Nicholson, with his signature inherited grin, has already gone viral for playing unhinged beaus in “Smile 2” and “I Love You Forever.” Now, Nicholson is getting into “King of Comedy” territory with the “violently romantic comedy” thriller, “Borderline.”
The ’90s-set feature, which is “Cocaine Bear” scribe Jimmy Warden’s highly-anticipated directorial debut, is led by Samara Weaving, who plays a pop star stalked by Nicholson’s deranged character. Eric Dane is cast as Weaving’s bodyguard and only hope of escaping the contrived wedding planned by her obsessed fan. Alba Batista and Jimmie Fails also star.
The official synopsis reads: “‘Borderline’ is an edge-of-your-seat thriller that follows a dangerously persistent stalker (Nicholson) who invades the home of a ‘90s pop superstar (Weaving) with grand delusions of a wedding. With her life on the line and help from her loyal bodyguard, she must escape the stalker’s sinister grip before they tie the knot.

Representation for women in leading or co-lead roles hit a record high in the top-grossing films of 2024, while opportunities for people of color took a sharp decline.
For the first time since Dr. Stacy L. Smith and the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative began evaluating each year’s 100 top-grossing films, gender equality has been reached — with 54 films featuring a woman or girl in a lead or co-lead role.
According to the study, authored by Katherine L. Neff, Smith and Dr. Katherine Pieper, the percentage of girls and women as protagonists was at an all-time high (54%) — up from 30% in 2023 and more than double what was first reported in 2007 (20%). This figure not only reached but exceeded proportional representation with the U.S. population (50.4%).

‘Smile 2’ director Parker Finn is open to making a sequel. The 37-year-old filmmaker - who helmed the 2024 horror movie and its 2022 predecessor - has revealed he hasn’t closed the door on the series yet, but has stressed any new flicks set in the franchise would remain “thoughtful” and “emotionally grounded”. Speaking with Collider, Finn said: “I think that if there were more directions for ‘Smile’ to go in I'd want to make sure that it stays very thoughtful and sort of thematic and emotionally grounded with characters because I think that's what makes the ‘Smile’ movies work and I want to make sure that it continues to be fresh and unexpected, so we'll have to see.”‘Smile 2’ follows pop mega-star Skye Riley (Naomi Scott) as her life begins to unravel after a haunting smile figure takes the form of her former partner Paul (Ray Nicholson) and mercilessly torments her.

Sophie Thatcher may not quite be a household name, at least not yet, anyway. For horror lovers of the world, however, she has quickly ascended the Hollywood ranks to become one of our modern go-to stars for high-profile genre fare. To that end, Thatcher is now headlining director Drew Hancock's "Companion," which /Film's Chris Evangelista hailed as the first great movie of 2025. Not only is the movie damn good, but it also had a damn fine opening weekend at the box office.
"Companion" opened to an estimated $9.5 million, debuting in second domestically behind the unexpectedly big animated hit "Dog Man" ($36 million), which hails from DreamWorks. Coming in second was by no means a bad thing, though, as Hancock's twisty sci-fi thriller cost a mere $10 million to make (before marketing). Considering it also pulled in $5.5 million overseas, it's well on its way to becoming profitable for Warner Bros. It might not be a massive hit,...

2024 delivered an incredible lineup of horror films, including A Quiet Place: Day One, Abigail, Alien: Romulus, Heretic, MaXXXine, Trap, Smile 2, The Substance and Nosferatu. Yet, one movie from last year truly rose above the rest. That film is Longlegs, starring Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage. After leaving theaters, fans eagerly waited for its arrival on streaming. Now, that day is finally here.
Longlegs is now available to stream, but not for everyone. On Jan. 8, 2025, the smash-hit horror film became available to watch on Prime Video but only in select locations. Those locations are Prime Video in the U.K. and Ireland. With only these two locations having access at the moment, this leaves fans outside those regions in suspense. They're stuck having to resort to alternative methods to watch the film.
For example, the only way people in the U.S. can watch Longlegs is by renting or buying it on digital platforms.

One of the greatest enemies a motion picture can have is its own marketing. Previews, posters and even hashtags are, for most people, our first exposure to a new release, revealing relevant information and teasing possibilities and plot points. Sometimes this information is accurate and enticing. Sometimes it’s misleading and sets the audience up for disappointment. And sometimes it’s very accurate, but arguably to a fault.
The trailers for writer/director Drew Hancock’s debut feature “Companion” are giving the audience a very good idea of the movie they’re about to watch, and that’s a little unfortunate, because the film is best viewed without any preconceived notions. Hancock’s wry and creepy screenplay sets its own expectations, inviting the audience along for a particular kind of scary thrill ride. When Hancock pulls out the rug we can see through the floor, into the movie’s mechanisms,...

How do you even begin to talk about "Companion" without giving the game away? Before we go any further, let me get something off my chest: many people have become too spoiler-phobic. At some point, certain folks decided that any and every element of a movie counts a spoiler. Perhaps it has something to do with how the now-fading Marvel Cinematic Universe took over the movie landscape and turned spoilers into such a big deal, perhaps not. All I know is that people can be really testy about what they perceive to be spoilers. Even talking about the most minor of details about a movie can earn the ire of someone loudly proclaiming, "Thanks for spoiling things, jerk!" To be clear: I do not think that marketing-approved details — stuff that shows up in an official synopsis or a trailer — counts as a spoiler. If the studio is making these details known in advance,...

The original Smile became a sleeper hit for writer/director Parker Finn in 2022, so it’s no surprise that the film has generated a sequel just two years later, especially given its obvious franchise potential. It’s particularly gratifying to find Finn back in both the writer’s and the director’s chairs, because he’s surely one of the finest jump scare orchestrators in the business.
Smile 2 picks up six days after the events of the first movie, as desperate cop Joel (a briefly returning Kyle Gallner) tries and fails to get rid of the cursed entity that infects each host and makes them see grotesquely grinning figures, before eventually killing themselves, while also wearing a monstrous smile.

Out today from our friends at Paramount, comes Smile 2 for the more brutal and terrifying section of your home video library. The writer/director/producer Parker Finn is back for more, and is following the horror movie creed that the sequel to a hit should be bigger, nastier, and gorier. Well, it is, and I loved the first film. Finn builds on the original great Smile concept of a demon or otherworldly being that feeds off trauma until the death of the host. This being then leaps to its next victim, creating misery and catastrophe everywhere in order to grow stronger. I’m just going to call it a demon from here on out, it’s simpler. Smile 2 starts off less than a week from the original...

A critically acclaimed 2014 historical drama climbed streaming charts following a related national holiday, becoming a success just one day later. Historical dramas have depicted plenty of important events throughout history, many of which are real events that had an important impact on the world. Some of the best historical drama movies of all time include Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List, Mel Gibson's Braveheart, and some reflecting more modern events, such as Black Hawk Down. These films have stood the test of time as important parts of film history as a whole.
However, there have also been movies about particular instances in American history that have proven to be important and timely. This includes stories about civil rights, everything from the 2013 biopic 12 Years a Slave, to the 2013 drama Lee Daniels' The Butler. These films underscore the regrettable elements of the United States' history, but continue to resonate because of...

Playing a new note in the emerging genre of thrillers set in the world of pop music, Opus joins the likes of Trap and Smile 2. However, those two films do not star John Malkovich as a pop star cult leader, so we suppose that’s one point for Opus.

Although Smile 2’s ending should have been exceptionally obvious, the horror sequel managed to make the twist feel like a genuine surprise thanks to some incredibly clever misdirections. Director Parker Finn’s sequel Smile 2 builds on the world established by 2022’s sleeper hit Smile from its opening scene onward. The bravura opening sequence sees Smile’s doomed antihero Joel venture into the trap house of some drug dealers so he can pass the curse onto them, only for him to accidentally also implicate Lukas Gage’s luckless small-time drug dealer Lewis. This bodes badly for Naomi Scott’s Skye.

Morris is one of the strangest additions to the story of Smile 2, and here is everything that we know about him, including his backstory, his plan in the sequel, and more. Most of Smile 2 centers on pop sensation Skye Riley, with a complicated series of events that took place after the end of the original Smile leading to her becoming possessed by the smile curse. However, Skye Riley isn't alone in her fight against the demonic entity, as she manages to meet Morris throughout the events of Smile 2, although his motivations and true nature are questionable.
Smile 2 takes the story and horror of the original Smile and puts it on a much bigger scale, with it haunting one of the world's biggest pop stars rather than a single doctor. Throughout the events of Smile 2, knowledge of the smile entity becomes more widespread, with Skye Riley...

Naomi Scott recently starred in the horror sequel, Smile 2, and this successful outing has been a long time coming for the actress, who made her breakout five whole years ago. Smile 2 is the sequel to the 2022 horror hit, Smile. The franchise centers on a demonic force called The Entity, which plagues its victims with horrifying hallucinations of people smiling creepily. After witnessing the tragic demise of Rose at the end of Smile, Smile 2 focuses on a new protagonist, pop star, Skye Riley. Skye is played by English actress, Scott.
Scott may be somewhat unfamiliar to audiences, but she has actually been in the acting business for quite a while. Scott's first major role was in the 2011 Disney Channel original film, Lemonade Mouth, where she was part of a high school band. After that, Scott collected a number of small TV roles until she appeared in 2017's Power Rangers.

Chris Hemsworth's path to superstardom has been paved by franchise films. One of his first roles was playing George Kirk in the 2009 film Star Trek. The supporting role was high profile and paved the way for other opportunities. Two years after he played that role, he made his Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) debut playing the titular god in Thor. Hemsworth would reprise his thunderous role in many MCU films, getting both solo and group features in the Avengers movies.
Outside the MCU, Hemsworth has been in both one-off and other franchise films. He plays the Huntsman in the Snow White and the Hunstman movies as well as a supporting character in the 2016 remake of Ghostbusters. He also dabbled in the Men in Black franchise through his role in Men in Black: International, and even played a Mad Max villain in last year's Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, which was a prequel to Fury Road.

Nosferatu has broken a major horror movie record by surpassing Longlegs at the box office. The latter movie, which was directed by Osgood Perkins, is a smash hit serial killer thriller starring Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage that grossed $127 million worldwide against a slim budget of less than $10 million after debuting on July 12, 2024. The Nosferatu release came much later, as the Robert Eggers remake of the iconic 1922 silent vampire film of the same name debuted on Christmas Day, becoming the highest-grossing new release over the holiday weekend.
Per Variety, as of Sunday morning, Nosferatu is projected to close out its third weekend in theaters with a 3-day domestic gross of $6.8 million in North America and $13.7 million internationally. The surprise success of Nosferatu means the timing couldn't be better for Hammer Horror to stage a glorious resurrection. Gothic horror movies like the classic Universal Monsters or the output of Britain's Hammer Films used to dominate the genre, once upon a time. Hammer franchises like the Christopher Lee Dracula movies or their Frankenstein series leaned into their Gothic origins, but the arrival of more modern, psychological chillers like Rosemary's Baby left the genre very dated in later years.
Modern horror tends to be defined by the likes of A24, but the occasional Gothic horror effort like Crimson Peak or even The Fall of the House of Usher occasionally breaks through. That's what makes the success of Robert Egger's Nosferatu remake so exciting. On the surface, the movie's retro feel and Gothic tone would have been considered offputting to modern viewers; instead, Nosferatu has grossed over $100 million worldwide (via...

The following contains spoilers for Smile 2, now streaming on Paramount+Smile 2's ending sets up Smile 3, but that film could lose the strongest aspects of the franchise. Smile 2 was a critical and commercial hit, building on the success of the previous film by shifitng the story from Sosie Bacon's Dr. Rose Cotter to the globally-known pop-star Skye Riley. Infected with the same seemingly demonic entity that preys on trauma and spreads through horrific acts of self-harm, Riley's arc was unique to Rose's but consistent with the rules and themes of the first film. The result was a compelling companion piece to the original that amplified the horror.
This includes Smile 2's ending, which takes the dangers posed by the nameless and horrifying Entity and amplifies it on a colossal scale. On one level, this is an exciting development that continues to broaden the scope...

Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu is one of the scariest and most atmospheric movies of 2024, with a mostly original story that draws inspiration from age-old Gothic stories and classic literature. The most blatant influence on Nosferatu is Bram Stoker’s famous novel Dracula, which strongly impacted the 1922 Nosferatu movie and remains a clear source of inspiration for Eggers’ movie. Although Nosferatu’s ending diverges strongly from Dracula’s, the two stories are based on the same ideas and share many of the same character tropes.
The similarities between Dracula and Nosferatu run deep, and it goes much further than the characters themselves. The stories use their Gothic conventions to explore the same themes, from the transgression of women’s sexuality to the subversion of gender roles in Victorian society. Stoker’s narrative is an extremely powerful one that was very progressive for its time, and Eggers’ Nosferatu uses many of the same...

Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2024, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
When reflecting on any year in movies, the theatrical experience rings most memorable. From driving across the border to Ohio with friends to watch No Country for Old Men in 2007, to a 35mm screening of Stalker at the Wexner Center for the Arts in 2011, with so rapt an audience I was terrified to swallow for fear it would disrupt their experience—each year holds it own special memories and 2024 was no different. There was a lively afternoon matinee of Between the Temples in which I was the youngest present by about 25 years, and a sold-out Wednesday screening of Showgirls at the Academy Museum with Elizabeth Berkley in person. But judging from reactions on X.com, I’m not alone in my favorite 2024 theatrical screening being witnessing Interstellar in 70mm IMAX.

Leigh Whannell may not be a name that everyone knows but, if you're a horror fan, he's undoubtedly touched your life in some way over the past 20 years. As the co-creator of both the long-running hit "Saw" franchise as well as "Insidious," he's certainly made a mark. That's to say nothing of his work as a director, which includes "Upgrade" and "The Invisible Man." In other words, Whannell's work is worth paying attention to. Case in point, his new take on "Wolf Man" is drawing more than a few eyeballs and figures to be a big hit for Blumhouse and Universal when it reaches theaters next weekend.
"Wolf Man" is currently looking at an opening weekend in the $20 to $30 million range, per Box Office Theory. That would be a solid start, particularly for a movie that was made on a shoestring $7 million production budget. Granted, that doesn't include marketing but,...

Tickets have finally gone on sale for Companion and we now have a new trailer and poster for a movie cleverly billed as being, "From the studio that brought you The Notebook, and the creators of Barbarian."
This is very much a new kind of love story with an added dose of sci-fi and horror as Sophie Thatcher's "sexbot" goes on a killing spree after reaching the end of her tether with her abusive owner, played by Jack Quaid.
Written and directed by Drew Hancock, Companion stars Sophie Thatcher, Jack Quaid, Lukas Gage, Megan Suri, Harvey Guillén and Rupert Friend.
Companion is produced by the filmmakers behind Barbarian: Raphael Margules, J.D. Lifshitz, Zach Cregger and Roy Lee. The executive producers are Tracy Rosenblum and Jamie Buckner.
The cinematographer is Eli Born. The production designer is Scott Kuzio. The editors are Brett W. Bachman and Josh Ethier. The costume designer is Vanessa Porter.
