The Lowdens, a young Black couple with a baby on the way, move into their newly-purchased home in Sunny Meadows, an "up and coming" neighborhood in Los Angeles. It's the perfect place to raise a family and for Brandon to start his new career. But between a mysterious, transient man on their front lawn and unsettling sounds in the house, things aren't as picturesque as they first seemed.

Anxious to fit in, Brandon and Justine invite their nosy new neighbors over for a barbecue. When Justine shares her concerns about noises in the house, one of the guests suggests buying security cameras for a little peace of mind. But when another guest mentions the possibility of paranormal activity, Brandon loses his patience and makes a scene. Meanwhile, Brandon and Manny connect over how out of place they feel in Sunny Meadows.

While preparing for a violent storm to hit Sunny Meadows, Brandon discovers Justine has been keeping a secret from him. Manny, soaked to the bone, stays the night and makes Brandon rethink how he's been treating Justine. But just as the skies clear and everything seems okay, the couple makes a bizarre discovery about the home.

The real estate agent knows nothing about a hatch, and according to the blue prints, there shouldn't be anything below the house. This is earthquake-prone California, after all. As the mystery of the house deepens, Brandon grows even more obsessed and anxious than Justine. Something is definitely wrong with their new home. And whatever's on the other side of that hatch must be the answer.

Brandon's worst nightmare has become reality: after working tirelessly to provide for his family, he and Justine have lost their home. Stranded and without legal support, they stay with one of Brandon's new colleagues. And they begin to find a way to fight back.

It's 2014 and Manny and his family are about to be evicted from their home that they're already struggling to afford. A grifter by nature, Manny takes on job after job, scheme after scheme. While drowning his sorrows at a local bar, Manny sees a news report that sparks an idea - a golden ticket idea - to cheat the system and live the life he knows he deserves.

Brandon and Justine seek out the guidance of an attorney who specializes in adverse possession. But their case is weak and with the baby on the way, they're running out of time. Meanwhile, Manny and his family live out their stolen lives, and Brandon nears his breaking point in a rental apartment just across the street.

Justine is sick of bearing the weight of her husband's obsession. Lorelai and Manny are embraced by their new neighbors. And tensions reach a boiling point when Brandon crashes a barbecue in an attempt to expose the con. In the end, it's anybody's game.

Brandon and Justine Lowden settle into their new home back east, trying to move forward after their terrible experience in LA. Justine forges ahead in her new career while Brandon takes a backseat to support her. Manny possibly finds a new path forward on a construction site.
