With a release perfectly timed to coincide with the Olympic Games, this thought-provoking documentary from Julia Fuhr Mann invites us to consider the historic bias against exceptional female, Black and LGBTQ+ athletes. The German director’s film, which includes the insertion of modern athletes into historic footage, scrutinises the way that excelling is celebrated when a white male athlete is doing it but has frequently erased from the record books when it is anybody else. The bias dates back to the Olympics itself, when its founder declared: “Female athletes act against the law of nature.” Fuhr Mann told us: “The goal was a little bit that the spectators start to question the categories.” It’s a goal she certainly achieves.

Now and then: Nolan's Oppenheimer and Insomnia Photo: Universal Pictures; Warner Bros
Oppenheimer, Sky Cinema now, and Insomnia, Itvx, streaming now
We don't frequently include two films from the same director in the Stay-at-Home but, then again, we don't subscribe to arbitrary rules either and the opportunity to catch something old and something new (not to mention something borrowed) from Christopher Nolan's back catalogue seems too good to miss. First up you can now stream the Oscar-winning latest from the British director, which details the development of the atomic bomb via the life of Robert Oppenheimer. Whether the film needs to be quite as structurally convoluted is definitely debatable but Nolan does like that sort of thing and you can't argue with the beautifully recreated period detail and the magnetic performances from Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr and Emily Blunt, among others. From the opposite - and more formulaic - end of Nolan's career,...

Exclusive: Umbrelic Entertainment co-founders Thomas Zambeck and Brian Katz are bringing back a new Anchor Bay Entertainment with an eye on genre films, undiscovered treasures, cult classics, and remastered catalog releases.
“We had an opportunity to take the name of a beloved genre film brand, one we feel a personal connection to, for our new company,” says Zambeck. “This is a new venture, unaffiliated with any previous incarnations. We aim to honor the history and spirit of the past as we look for interesting films that break the mold, and will be discovered by new generations for years to come.”
In Lionsgate’s acquisition of Starz in December 2016, the studio absorbed the North American branches of Anchor Bay Entertainment. The Anchor Bay Entertainment trademark was up for acquisition so Zambeck and Katz took the opportunity to acquire it. The new Anchor Bay Entertainment doesn’t include the previous label’s library.

Society Of The Snow We hope all our readers have a terrific year of film watching in 2024 and after a bit of a shuffle over the festive period, our Stay-at-Home Seven will be back in its regular Monday slot from next week.
Society Of The Snow, Netflix, streaming from Thursday, January 4
The eagle-eyed among you will notice we accidentally included this a few weeks ago and then had to change our selection - but this time you really can catch it! Netflix originals often get branded mediocre, but don't let this gripping Spanish language survival drama from Ja Bayona pass you by. He takes on the story of members of a Uruguayan rugby team who, famously, managed to survive after crashing in the Andes in 1972, previously adapted into films Survive and Alive. Bayona's version benefits from the fact there are no big names in his ensemble cast, meaning it's much.
