Jesse Eisenberg and Riley Keogh don realistic sasquatch suits for Nathan and David Zellner’s eco-dramedy. Here’s our Sasquatch Sunset review.
Many films have explored the possibility of giant, mythical creatures existing in the wild, from the comedic to the horrific.
In Sasquatch Sunset, directors (and brothers) Nathan and David Zellner point their camera towards the human-like, hairy and surprisingly gentle creatures. And while they aren’t real, the story manages to use these characters to explore some real insights about our relationship to nature. The film follows a four-strong sasquatch family over the course of one year as they roam the woods, but their lives are increasingly complicated by humans and the changing nature of… well, nature.
The Zellners have put their actors, Jesse Eisenberg, Riley Keough and child actor Christophe Zajac-Denek, into realistic sasquatch costumes, while David Zellner completes the pack as the alpha sasquatch. The family...

The legend of the Frogman comes to the screen in the new found footage movie Frogman, which joined the Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox streaming service today!
In Frogman, “In the summer of 1999, a 12-year-old named Dallas Kyle captured footage of the mythical Frogman, but no one believed it was real. Twenty years later, Dallas, now an amateur filmmaker struggling to turn his passion into a career, returns to Loveland with friends Amy and Scotty determined to obtain irrefutable proof that the Frogman exists.
“But what starts as an innocent documentary soon turns into a Lovecraftian nightmare as Dallas uncovers the horrific secrets hidden beneath Loveland’s idyllic surface.”
Nathan Tymoshuk, Chelsey Grant, Benny Barrett and Justen Jones star.
Meagan Navarro wrote in her mini-review out of Popcorn Frights 2023, “Director Anthony Cousins takes on the cryptic Frogman via found footage in his feature directorial debut, co-written with John Karsko. In it, a...

What the heck is Sasquatch Sunset?
Sure, we watched the trailer released earlier this year, but that didn’t help much. Outside of brief introductory text and quotes from critics, the wordless trailer introduces us to a group of Bigfoots in their natural wooded habitat. We watch them frolic in the woods, pound sticks on trees, and, yes, screw.
Although Sasquatches have appeared in film before, they usually have a clear and definable purpose. They’re monsters in movies such as Willow Creek or slightly bigger pets in comedies like Harry and the Hendersons. But Sasquatch Sunset doesn’t seem to fit into either of those categories, so what kind of movie is it?
“The movie is so funny because you’re watching these things that feel othered,” actor Jesse Eisenberg tells Den of Geek at SXSW 2024. “And then in 10 minutes, you’re watching these things that feel completely human,...

For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit the short-lived anthology horror satire “Bobcat Goldthwait’s Misfits & Monsters,” which aired on TruTV back in 2018.
Although these days it’s known mainly as the channel on cable that plays “Impractical Jokers” all day, every day, back in 2018, Tru TV sought out to try some different programming. After successfully pulling away from their line up of reality shows, the network aimed to deliver a hefty line up of original comedy series, many of which ended up being damn good.
Among the line up introduced, there was “Bobcat Goldthwait’s Misfits & Monsters.” Comedian, actor, and director Goldthwait is no stranger to the horror genre (I loved his found footage film Willow Creek), and was the mastermind behind this delightfully unusual horror anthology series. Every week, “Misfits & Monsters” told a variety of half hour stories, all of which were a healthy mix of dark comedy,...

First, from master of horror Tobe Hooper, Eaten Alive has now taken a bite out of Screambox.
The ’70s killer crocodile flick features The Addams Family‘s Carolyn Jones, a pre-Freddy-Krueger Robert Englund, and Halloween‘s Kyle Richards.
In the film, “Deep in the swamps of Louisiana, disfigured psychotic Judd (Neville Brand) manages a sleazy, decaying motel. Upon learning that one of his guests is a prostitute, he promptly impales her with a pitchfork and tosses her to the crocodile that stalks the nearby waters. Bigfoot’s relationship with the horror genre is a strange one.
On its own, the idea of a towering woodland ape is pretty pants-shittingly scary, especially if you happen to be contemplating the legendary cryptid while in the middle of a deep dark forest. However, for some strange reason, that terror too often gets lost when it’s seen through the lens of a movie camera. Maybe it’s the aftermath of films like Harry and the Hendersons essentially turning the beast into an upright and trunkless Mr. Snuffleupagus. Or perhaps it has something to do with the fact that it’s just too easy to make inappropriate jokes centered around its, ahem, big feet. Whatever the reason, the vast majority of cinematic representations of Sasquatch seen in horror just don’t hit the way other monsters do.
Of course, there are exceptions to this rule. One of them is...

A young couple find themselves face to face with a terrifying evil when they venture into the heart of Bigfoot country in Willow Creek, director Bobcat Goldthwait’s unique spin on the horror genre.
“Looking to make a splash with his research videos into the existence of Bigfoot, Jim (Bryce Johnson) and his skeptical girlfriend Kelly (Alexie Gilmore) take a camping trip to the mountains surrounding Willow Creek, California, a small town where famous footage of the legendary Sasquatch was filmed decades earlier. Jim believes Bigfoot exists and is intent on finding the very spot where the huge, hairy, man-like creature supposedly strode.
But before long, Jim and Kelly are lost in the woods and discover that someone – or something – is stalking them. With each passing night bringing unknowable danger, the two must...

A city couple relocating to a home in the forest discover a commune on the neighbouring land is home to a cult of sasquatch worshippers harbouring sinister secrets.
Directed and co-written by Jon Garcia, Summoning the Spirit is a strange beast: part meditative melodrama reflecting upon the effects of grief on a relationship, and part solemn eco-horror creature-feature with a strong message about the impact of mankind’s meddling on nature. At the outset it appears to be an intriguing blend of Midsommar meets the likes of Willow Creek, Exists, or The Legend Of Boggy Creek, but to label it as such isn’t fair. While there are parallels with Midsommar – a grieving protagonist struggles through the aftermath of unspeakable loss while being slowly drawn into the ritualistic practices of a strange cult – Garcia’s film is very much its own thing, with its own things to say. ...

(Welcome to Scariest Scene Ever, a column dedicated to the most pulse-pounding moments in horror with your tour guides, horror experts Matt Donato and Ariel Fisher. In this edition: Matt goes Squatching and Ariel finds terror in the silence.)
I'm not afraid of Sasquatch. This entry isn't some deep-seated fear of a cryptid icon. Sasquatch movies don't usually provoke my curiosity of unknowns, except Bobcat Goldthwait's "Willow Creek" hits differently. Maybe that's because Goldthwait approaches "Willow Creek" as a hardcore "Squatcher" — those who are most serious about finding Bigfoot — with authentic curiosity blended into his found-footage creature feature.

I love a good Bigfoot movie and there’s nowhere near enough of them. Most recently Willow Creek and even more so, Exists have been really entertaining Bigfoot movies. But Ape Canyon isn’t like those movies at all really and genre fans looking for a scary or action-packed-style film will be disappointed. Ape Canyon does offer much more though.
Ape Canyon follows Cal Piker and his sister as they embark on an adventure to see Bigfoot. Cal is on the verge of implosion, the viewer left to find out why, and his love of Bigfoot means he believes this will be a good distraction. He needs somebody with him though and his sister, who has always been there for him,...

There’s not a more overwrought and overused genre trope as the found footage format, at least in terms of direct to DVD movies, with many film makers using the format in place of having a decent story. Which means – at least for me – the sub-genre has become something of a nadir when it comes to horror.
However once in a while the format can be used to great effect, and this year there have been some stellar entries in the found-footage genre, be it in the cinema or on DVD: The Den, Willow Creek, Across the River, The Cellar and Black Water Vampire. And now you can add Aussie horror Prying Eyes (such a poor re-title of There’s Something in the Pilliga) to the list.

A spiritual successor to Road Rash that is set in a Grand Theft Auto-style open world sounds like an excellent idea, doesn’t it?
Well, as it turns out, an idea isn’t all you need when it comes to making games. If it was, I’d be a multi-billionaire that wouldn’t be talking to the likes of you right now. Unfortunately, Road Rage appears to be an idea with little else of substance behind it.
The concept behind the game is exactly as I’ve described. It’s motorcycle combat in a GTA-like world. An underground group of bikers in the city of Ashen have decided that the time has come to rise up and overthrow the oppressors that have turned their formerly booming homeland into a dark and murderous place. To do this, they’ll take part in a series of motorcycle races, elimination events, stunt challenges,...

Shot in seven days in the wilderness, Altar follows several longtime friends who end up fighting for their lives after coming across something unimaginably horrifying in the mountains. For our latest Q&A feature, we caught up with Altar writer/director Matt Sconce to discuss the improvisational atmosphere of his latest movie, the cast and crew's eerie encounters with wildlife during filming, and plans for a sequel.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us,Matt. When and how did you come up with the idea for Altar?
Matt Sconce: Altar was a concept from four years ago. My dad and I brainstormed the idea on a road trip and I wrote a loose outline called Altar, which then waited patiently on a shelf for the right timing. That timing came four years after writing the outline. My friends made a movie called The Gallows through Blumhouse,...

I’m a huge horror fan. The adrenaline rush of being scared (in the safety of my own home or in the movie theaters of course) is addicting. Once upon a time, when I had more spare time, I was constantly scouring the Internet for obscure (but well-reviewed) horror films. Unfortunately, I can’t do this as much as I use to, but I still watch many as I can. 2016 was a great year for big horror releases (The Witch, Don’t Breathe, The Invitation, The Green Room and Syfy's Channel Zero: Candle Cove anthology TV series are a few that come to mind), and 2017 is set to be another fantastic year with the recently-released and critically acclaimed movies, Get Out, Raw, and Split, and upcoming titles like the highly anticipated It and It Comes At Night. The future or horror is looking bright for the silver screen.

"This year the wildest legend of all comes to life." Studiocanal UK has unveiled a very short teaser trailer for an animated film titled The Son of Bigfoot, produced by StudioCanal in France, and animated by nWave Pictures in Belgium. The film is aimed towards younger kids and families, and is about a boy who goes "on an epic and daring quest to uncover the mystery behind his long-lost dad, only to find out that he is none other than the legendary Bigfoot." Surprise! The voice cast hasn't been revealed yet, even though this teaser does include one voice. We've seen some low-budget horror films based around bigfoot recently (like Exists or Willow Creek), but it's interesting to see a goofy, family-friendly take on the furry forest monster. Enjoy. Here's the teaser trailer (+ poster) for Jeremy Degruson & Ben Stassen's The Son of Bigfoot, on YouTube: Teenage outsider Adam sets...

Halloween may be the favorite time of the year for many horror fans, but that doesn’t mean independent filmmakers should release their horror movies in late October. Though Halloween used to be an ideal time for scarier films opening in limited release, many distributors today are avoiding the last week of October like the plague.

Subverting the Unexpected
At the end of the 20th century, Bobcat Goldthwait’s legacy read like a cheap joke: He was a screaming comedian from the eighties best known as Zed in the “Police Academy” franchise who once tried at his hand at directing a movie (“Shakes the Clown”). Those achievements barely skimmed the surface of Goldthwait’s ability, as the ensuing years made clear, when Goldthwait completely transformed his career into one of the most provocative American filmmakers working today. With the microbudget “Sleeping Dogs Lie” (aka “Stay”), Goldthwait showed his potential to funnel taboo subject matters into oddly touching, relatable human dramas, a proclivity he kicked up to a whole new level with the subversive black comedy “World’s Greatest Dad,” which features Robin Williams in one of his all-time great roles.

"I wouldn't have made the movie if it wasn't for Robin's encouragement."-- Director Bobcat Goldthwait on Call Me Lucky. The first time I interviewed actor-turned-director Bobcat Goldthwait, it was for the weird and wonderful World's Greatest Dad, starring the late, irreplaceable Robin Williams. (You can read that interview here). The film was an unexpected wallop, and is even more important to me now. Goldthwait continues to switch up his filmmaking, taking on different genres and styles. Last year he made a great horror film called Willow Creek. It's a found footage film, but unlike most found footage films made today, he brought originality and terror to the exhausted sub-genre. There's a 20-minute single take scene that's guaranteed to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand straight...

"I want to prove F. Scott Fitzgerald wrong," Bobcat Goldthwait told me, "that there are no second acts." Not only has he directed seven films over the past decade, but he had a blast directing "Community." "Call Me Lucky," his third Sundance debut and first documentary, is a profile of standup comic Barry Crimmins. Goldthwait's last fiction film "Willow Creek" was a found footage Bigfoot movie with the filmmaker "interviewing actual folks in a town and putting them in a suspense scary buffet movie." So it was natural that he should go full documentary for "Call Me Lucky," which started with Goldthwait's best friend of 33 years, Robin Williams (he still gets teary when his name comes up), who was trying to make a scripted narrative movie about Crimmins. "It seemed like it was hard to get going that way," said Goldthwait back at Sundance. "So Robin suggested we...

If you know who Bobcat Goldthwait is, chances are you’re keenly aware that comedy tends to have a strong pull on basically everything he’s ever done. His feature film career includes dark comedies like Shakes the Clown, World’s Greatest Dad, and God Bless America, and between those ventures he’s a driving force behind stand-up comedy specials or series for well-known jokers like Patton Oswalt, Demetri Martin, Marc Maron, and even Dave Chappelle back when he had his own show. With that strong trend of comedy, Goldthwait’s sudden venture into the lands of horror with Willow Creek, a film about sasquatches in the Pacific Northwest, will catch any fan off-guard. It’s easy to find the traces of Goldthwait’s sense of humor amidst the horror, but it’s just also quite clear that Goldthwait has a firm grasp of what creates and fuels the undercurrent...

It would probably be fair to say that pretty much everyone got something out of the horror genre in 2014. For the film buffs and critics there was The Babadook and Willow Creek. For those loving slow-burning chillers there was Under the Skin and The Guest. For those seeking a slice of jet-black comedy with their main course of gore there was Life After Beth and Horns. And for those who harbored schlock Z-movie horror as a guilty pleasure – there was, er, Zombeavers.
2015 also saw some of the big guns weigh in with new doses of bloodshed – including Eli Roth returning with The Green Inferno, and Ti West’s The Sacrament – and a fresh, sinister franchise apparently emerged with the release of the dread-dominated Oculus back in the summer. Even a couple of independent gory gems like Nurse were unearthed.

While reflecting on an entire year’s worth of horror movies may sound like a tremendous chore, there’s no better feeling than reliving some of your favorite cinematic moments after the dust has settled and no more films remain unreleased. Sure, sifting through the worst of the worst may be not be an enviable task – which I did for my Worst Horror Movies Of 2014 feature already – but my “Best Of” work is where the movie Gods show their mercy. This is my exploration of the best horror had to offer this year, and my chance to tip my hat towards those horror films that remind me why a genre full of murder, mayhem, and spooky horrors provides the highest highs that Hollywood can provide.
Before I get to the main list, I do want to give a few shout-outs to those films that deserve an honorable mention, even if...

With the last-minute brouhaha over The Interview’s play in an estimated 300+ indie engagements, it would seem that the Christmas Day box office is all about the Sony political comedy and nothing less. While rival studios expressed alarm last week about The Interview’s presence in the market, they’re rather apathetic about its return. Will The Interview cut into other major titles’ showtimes in major markets such as Los Angeles, New York and Dallas? “No, not really. First, people have to figure out that it’s out there,” says one studio chief, while another observed, “The Interview is playing a bunch of little art house and sub-run theaters. If they were in the circuit first run houses it would be a different story.”
Since The Interview fell off tracking, there’s no barometer for insiders to project what it could actually rake up over four-days. And the film’s...

Great horror films were not hard to find this year, but as is usually the case the best ones didn’t open wide in theaters nationwide. The studio efforts were once again the year’s lesser genre entries, and while I had some fun with the likes of Annabelle and As Above So Below the fourteen films below offer far more when it comes to chills, thrills and creative atmospheres. And a quick note on some of the other titles you won’t find below… both Afflicted and Willow Creek were on last year’s list, and several movies — Black Mountain Side, Cooties, Creep, Cub, The Editor, It Follows, Spring, What We Do In the Shadows and Zombeavers — would have made this year’s, but they’ve only played festivals and have yet to see an official U.S. release. 14. In his past time, he drives through the city in his classic Jaguar, collects music memorabilia, photographs, books, vintage musical instruments and old vinyls. He lives in an isolated home in the ruins of Detroit Michigan where he reunites with his enigmatic lover Eve. There, he enlists the help of one of his most dedicated fans (Anton Yelchin) to help collect the analog equipment he needs, and his doctor (Jeffrey Wright) to provide him with a steady supply of his favourite drink, type O-negative. Immortality is weighing on him and thoughts of suicide slowly take over. Not much happens, and not much needs to.

We here at Sound On Sight believe horror transcends explicit gore, jump scares or supernatural content, which is why you’ll soon notice our list ranges from independent art films to psychological thrillers to parodies, satire and more. Surprisingly, vampires lead the pack this year, along with found footage flicks, but there are a few comedies, one remake and even some strange love stories as well.
Every other year, I’ve published the list of best horror films based solely on my picks, but this year, Sound On Sight editor Justine Smith and Sos contributor Felix Vasquez Jr. also participated. Since we couldn’t agree with what is the best horror film of 2014, we decided to publish the list in alphabetical order. That said, here are our individual picks:
Ricky D- Under the Skin
Justine Smith – Cybernatural
Felix Vasquez Jr. - The Babadook

This list is in alphabetical order

There’s not a more overwrought and overused genre trope as the found footage format, at least in terms of direct to DVD movies, with many film makers using the format in place of having a decent story. Which means – at least for me – the sub-genre has become something of a nadir when it comes to horror.
However once in a while the format can be used to great effect, and this year there have been some stellar entries in the found-footage genre, be it in the cinema or on DVD: The Den, Willow Creek, Across the River, The Cellar and Black Water Vampire.
And now you can add Aussie horror There’s Something in the Pilliga to the list.

One of the more unexpected side effects of Interstellar‘s much-ballyhooed release in 35mm, 70mm and 70mm IMAX has been a wave of videos from local theaters showing their patrons exactly what it takes to prepare and project 70mm. My pick of the litter is this nicely shot two-minute video from the Willow Creek 12 Theater in Plymouth, Minnesota. Watch the process from start to finish as eight cans of film arrive, are unlocked, checked for damage, and then fed onto a platter for projection. An earlier video showed the theater testing its 70mm projector for its first 70mm engagement in 22 years. […]...
