Movie and television credits are, by and large, self-explanatory. Actors act, directors direct, and designers design whatever it is they design. Some of these off-camera credits aren't always fully representative of who was most responsible for a film/show's artistic quality (the list of screenwriters denied credit via the Writers Guild of America's murky arbitration process is long and distinguished), but at least in theory, the casual viewer knows what these people did.
The same cannot be said of producers.
To the film and television fan who's never read a behind-the-scenes account of how these entertainments get made, the role of the producer can seem awfully nebulous. To people who've been covering the industry for decades, the role of each credited producer can at times seem equally unclear. What differentiates a producer from an executive producer? Doesn't "co-producer" sound an awful lot like an "associate producer?" Are all of these producers needed on set,...

XYZ Films has acquired U.S. rights to the classic Cannes Directors’ Fortnight title “The World is Yours” directed by Romain Gavras from StudioCanal and to the TIFF hit film “We Gotta Get Out of This Place,” directed by Simon Hawkins and Zeke Hawkins. The hyper-stylized films are the first titles in a new XYZ initiative to introduce audiences to classic festival hits that cater to cinema fans.
“The World is Yours” premiered at Cannes in 2018 and stars Karim Leklou, Isabelle Adjani, Vincent Cassel and Oulaya Amamra and was co-written by Gavras, Karim Boukercha and Noe Debre. In the film, a mid-level drug dealer (Leklou) dreams of having a new life, but his mother (Adjani) has gambled away his savings. He must take one last job in Spain, but his entourage gets involved: his mother, his ex-con friend, his crush, and possibly The Illuminati.

Rock legends Blue Öyster Cult have announced a new album, Ghost Stories, and shared the single “So Supernatural” ahead of the April 12th release date.
The album is somewhat unconventional, as it is constructed of “lost gems” from the BÖC archives. It also appears to be their final album, as a press release touts it as “a fitting finale to the recording legacy of one of rock’s most iconic fixtures from the past 50 years.”
Original master tapes were exhumed and digitized, then re-imagined using AI enhancement and new studio tracking by Richie Castellano along with remaining original members Eric Bloom and Donald “Buck Dharma” Roeser, and drummers Albert Bouchard and Rick Downey (plus additional overdubs recorded by Joe Bouchard).
The melodic and mid-tempo groove of “So Supernatural” certainly reflects the band’s classic era — recalling Spectres in particular — but it’s rendered through shiny modern production and extra coats of sonic paint.

Indie rock duo Hey, King have released a new video that captures the recording of their cover of the Animals’ classic “We Gotta Get Out of this Place,” featuring Animals frontman himself, Eric Burdon.
The cover finds Burdon in fine form as he unleashes his perennially potent wail alongside vocals from Hey, King’s Natalie London and Taylor Plecity. Ben Harper — who produced Hey, King’s upcoming debut album — lends his voice to the song as well, and appears in the video, which was filmed at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles.

If a show is considered funny, irreverent, or just plain goofy, its dramatic contributions to the TV landscape are often overlooked.
It can be risky for shows reliant on comedy to tackle serious subjects, like death, because when it goes wrong, it falls into after-school-special territory.
When it's done well, though, the treatment of the subject has resulted in some of TV's most moving and honest moments.
Take Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist as an example. The big draw of the show is the fact it's a musical comedy. To the show's credit, it consistently executes big musical numbers in a fun way.
Who is going to forget Lauren Graham and Renee Elise Goldsberry's sing-off on Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Season 1 Episode 10 any time soon?
However, what makes Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist, a compelling watch is its exploration of death, grief, and loss.

The release of Spectre this month once again brings the story of James Bond and one of the longest-running movie franchises to the fore. A key aspect of Bond films, dating back to 1962’s Dr. No, has been the villain that Bond squares off with. A good villain can elevate a Bond movie, making the casting of Bond’s adversary as important as the casting of Bond himself. With Christoph Waltz taking on the role for Spectre, the time has come to look forward to the next Bond installment, and there is already a prime candidate who should get the job; Mark Pellegrino.
Pellegrino has proven himself in a number of complex roles over the years, and is a familiar name to genre fans, having made appearances on Lost and Supernatural one after the other in key roles. He’s also appeared on Revolution, The Tomorrow People, and Quantico, in...

Who knows why it took so long for Michael S. Ojeda’s spiritual remake of The Crow to hit wider audiences, but after two long years of festival screenings and showcases, Avenged (formerly Savaged) has become a valuable example of perseverance and gritty determination. It’s not often that I’m completely taken aback by visual brutality, but credit Ojeda with knocking each redemptive slaughter out of the park when it comes to confident, 80s-style effects work. You’ve got to admire a filmmaker who relies on good ol’ fashioned practical gooeyness whenever his violent vixen screams her wicked war cry, and Avenged showcases some of the most creative bodily chaos I’ve seen in a good while. It’s I Spit On Your Grave with a Native American twist – talk about reparations!

B.J. knows full well that once his two only friends leave, he will soon be stranded alone in this podunk cotton town with one career option: cotton. When the three friends return home from their weekend excursion, Giff (Mark Pellegrino) is in the midst of a violent rampage, attempting to track down the stolen money. After another fateful decision is made, B.J., Sue and Bobby find themselves dangerously indebted to Giff. They are left with only one foreseeable option, to steal from Giff's money-laundering boss, Big Red (William Devane). As you can probably guess, that option does not work out very well for them. Drenched in pulpy undercurrents, Bad Turn Worse is a gritty neo-noir that is propelled by the life-altering decisions made by the three young protagonists. While subtly touching upon economic and intellectual disparity, the Hawkins brothers -- following the lead of screenwriter Dutch Southern --...

This weekend’s onslaught of smaller new films will have awards contenders and big names to jostle with at the box office. Awards hopefuls Foxcatcher and The Homesman begin their theatrical runs in limited New York and L.A. rollouts, with the former a likely winner in the first weekend when the numbers come in Sunday. The films from Sony Pictures Classics and Roadside Attractions, respectively, tell particularly American stories, though from very different eras. The Daily Show‘s Jon Stewart took time off in 2013 to work on his directorial debut. Open Road’s Rosewater, starring Gael García Bernal, will begin its theatrical rollout this weekend. It will be the biggest opener of this weekend’s cadre of specialty newcomers, playing in several hundred locations in the U.S. and Canada. Actor Chris Lowell also makes his filmmaking launch with Beside Still Waters. The project had smooth sailing until it came time for distribution,...

The feature debut from directorial siblings Simon and Zeke Hawkins is a tense and earthy film noir that wears its pulp influences proudly on its sleeve as it weaves a tale of love, betrayal and escape through the underbelly of the barren Texas wilderness. From its opening moments, Bad Turn Worse (formerly titled We Gotta Get Out Of This Place) - the first feature from the New York City-born Hawkins brothers - declares its love for hard-boiled crime writer Jim Thompson (the man responsible for such noir classics as The Getaway and After Dark, My Sweet). A young couple hanging out in a diner momentarily discuss the correct vernacular for traditional southern cooking, before turning their attentions to the merits of the acclaimed pulp fiction...

In movies, small towns are too often populated with inbred, murderous hillbillies, but there’s nevertheless a wealth of interesting, seldom-explored and considerably more believable stories to tell about them. “Bad Turn Worse” offers audiences little that they haven’t seen in one form or another — small-town kids, dreams of escape and the interference of local criminals — but in the hands of screenwriter Dutch Southern and directors Simon and Zeke Hawkins, its familiar components come together in a unique way. A crime thriller rich with emotional resonance, “Bad Turn Worse” offers the kind of clean, elegant storytelling whose emotional impact eclipses the cosmetic horrors of its counterparts while announcing the arrival of considerable new filmmaking talents. Jeremy Allen White (“Afterschool”) plays Bobby, a recent high school graduate who is set to head off to the same college as his best friend B.J.’s (Logan Huffman) girlfriend Sue (Mackenzie Davis). B.

From the opening robbery in a hard-land gas station, Simon Hawkins and Zeke Hawkins's Bad Turn Worse floors it straight into the past — it plays like one of the best of those chatty, reflexive, standoffs-and-monologues crime indies every young dude in L.A. whipped up after Tarantino hit. Deep into the third act, one character actually says, "Now you're bluffing"; another, after announcing a betrayal meant to upend our understanding of what's been going on, executes a little bow. (That one's also tasked with proving the film's un-pc bona fides, saying, "No reason you'd kill someone who exists, right? Just fucking Mexicans!") From directors Simon and Zeke Hawkins, and starring Jeremy Allen White, Mackenzie Davis, Logan Huffman, Mark Pellegrino and William Devane, the story follow three teens in debt to a local gangster. Looking to square the balance sheet, the teens agree to rip off the gangster's boss, and as you might surmise from the title,...

Whenever anyone mentions Bad Turn Worse in the future, I’ll fondly think back on one of my new favorite heist explanation scenes, so cleverly orchestrated by brothers Simon and Zeke Hawkins. Blending the frantic nature of a first-person-shooter with cheeky criminal comedy, three juvenile robbers run though their illegal blueprints in real time, imagining exactly how the break-in should go down. While that might sound a bit oversimplified, the Hawkins brothers inject a little fun by having the two characters on camera react to any hiccups in the plan mid-scene, interrupting a hold-up with hypothetical questions only to direct their attention back towards elderly hostages after bickering about small details. The sequence is flashy, exciting, clever and memorable, striking a unique high note – a note that’s sorely missed throughout the film’s more generic existence.

Lost co-star Mark Pellegrino stars in this very dark looking thriller called Bad Turn Worse, in which he plays a very bad dude. We have the first trailer for the movie to share with you, and it seems like one of those crazy off-beat films that I would enjoy watching. Here's the synopsis:
After a weekend of partying with stolen money, three Texas teens (Jeremy Allen White, Logan Huffman, and Mackenzie Davis) find themselves indebted to a sociopathic criminal named Giff (Mark Pellegrino in a breakout performance). To pay their debt, Giff forces the teens to steal from his boss, a money-laundering gangster named Big Red (William Devane). Things go from bad to worse when betrayal, distrust, and corruption complicate an already dangerous plan. This stylish and emotional crime thriller is the stunning directorial debut of Simon and Zeke Hawkins. An official selection of the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival.

The Texas-set neo-noir formerly known as We Gotta Get Out Of This Place has ponied up its first trailer as Starz Digital ramps up for a November 14 release. Jeremy Allen White (Shameless), Mackenzie Davis (Halt And Catch Fire) and Logan Huffman (V) star in Bad Turn Worse as small-town youngsters who blow stolen cash on a weekend of partying. Unfortunately, the sociopath they stole from (Lost‘s Mark Pellegrino) answers to an even scarier boss (William Devane), whose riches the kids are forced to heist in order to repay their debt.
Zeke and Simon Hawkins directed from a script by Dutch Southern and shot the pic on location in Texas cotton country. After it debuted at Tiff 2013, Starz acquired U.S. and Canada rights and set a limited theatrical/digital release plan. That strategy might work out well for Starz; between the film’s festival premiere and now, more indies...

"Sounds like game time to me." Just last week, we exclusively debuted the teaser poster for the Texas crime thriller Bad Turn Worse, the film formerly known as We Gotta Get Out of This Place, which debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival last year. Now the film is finally getting released next month in limited theaters and on VOD, and the first trailer has arrived. This looks really cool, like a contemporary western, and the praise for a villainous turn from Mark Pellegrino sounds like that alone will make the film worth seeing. Mackenzie Davis and Jeremy Allen White also star in the film. Watch the trailer! Here's the first trailer for Simon Hawkins & Zeke Hawkins' Bad Turn Worse, originally from Apple: After a weekend of partying with stolen money, three Texas teens (Jeremy Allen White, Logan Huffman and Mackenzie Davis) find themselves indebted to a sociopathic criminal...

Sometime a film's buzz has a curious, firework-esque lifespan: there's a lot of dazzle and noise at first, and then a quick dissipation into the ether. This seemed to happen to 2013 Fantastic Film Fest hit "We've Gotta Get Out Of This Place." Met with heaps of praise out of that genre festival, we've barely heard about the movie a word since. But that's about to change as it's roaring back to life. Our Fantastic Fest review (quotes from which are featured on the poster and trailer for the film) says the thriller "offers the kind of clean, elegant storytelling whose emotional impact eclipses the cosmetic horrors of its counterparts while announcing the arrival of considerable new filmmaking talents." Now retitled "Bad Turn Worse," a new poster and trailer for the film has arrived. Directed by Simon Hawkins and Zeke Hawkins, the picture is a Texas-set crime thriller, and the official...

The Brothers Hawkins have arrived on the scene with a loud bang that could be seen as an ode to a favourite weapon of choice in the crime genre. Now as their feature directorial debut, We Gotta Get Out of This Place, makes its way into UK cinemas, HeyUGuys had the opportunity to lightly interrogate the filmmaking duo, as they shared with us their thoughts on the creative process and the first film in their directorial canon.
Why a career in filmmaking? Was there that one inspirational moment?
Zeke Hawkins: We grew up at the movies. Whilst our parents were trying to deal with having two boys, we would go to the cinema four times a week throughout our childhood. So we have always loved movies. In terms of a seminal moment, I remember when I was eighteen and I first saw Steven Soderbegh’s Out of Sight. It...

★★☆☆☆Having one of your lead characters nonchalantly reference Jim Thompson, surely the master of twisted, sweaty Southern noir fiction, means you're already setting yourself up for a potential fall awfully quickly. This, unfortunately, is precisely what sibling directing duo Simon and Zeke Hawkins do with We Gotta Get Out of This Place (2013), a largely groanworthy independent offering which is severely lacking in the pulpy charms it so desperately tries to emulate. The brothers have certainly done their homework, knuckling down to watch the early works of John Dahl and the Coen brothers, but the resulting film looks more like an overly self-conscious and lifeless facsimile rather than a work of breezy homage.

Canadian actress Mackenzie Davis had some rather fortunate luck with her first film out of the gate: she was cast alongside Guy Pearce, Felicity Jones and Amy Ryan in Drake Doremus’ drama “Breathe In.” Not only was it a plum gig, but her small but crucial performance seized the moment and that year at Sundance she was dubbed one to watch by many (including us). Davis has since landed roles in “That Awkward Moment” alongside Zac Efron and the festival crime hit “We Gotta Get Out of This Place.” This week she turns up in another supporting, but important role in “What If” starring Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan. Much like her conspicuous lover in the film, played by Adam Driver, Mackenzie’s rebellious, cynical, but romantic Nicole character steals most of the scenes she’s in. The 27-year-old actress also co-stars in AMC’s undervalued “Halt & Catch Fire” (a...
