Hulu Sets Documentary on Tegan and Sara Catfishing Scheme That Terrorized Fans of the Indie Rock Duo
Hulu has picked up the documentary “Fanatical: The Catfishing of Tegan and Sara,” which will launch Oct. 18 on the streamer. Produced by Story Syndicate and Erin Lee Carr’s Carr Lot Prods., the film focus on a long-running catfishing scheme that has impacted fans of Canadian indie rock band Tegan and Sara.
The doc follows what happened when Tegan Quin (who performs with sister Sara Quin) was hacked in 2011 and her personal files exposed. From there, her identity was stolen and used in a complex catfish scheme to defraud the band’s fans and the community that had developed around Tegan and Sara.
“Tegan and Sara ascended to global fame as one of the most influential queer indie rock bands of their generation,” the documentary’s synopsis noted. “They worked hard to cultivate an inclusive and passionate fanbase around the world. Listeners were drawn to the duo’s beautifully confessional lyrics,...

HBO’s House of the Dragon hit its highest mark to date in Nielsen’s streaming ratings for June 17-23.
The series racked up 1.23 billion minutes of viewing on Max for the week after its season two premiere (and including a few hours of viewing for the second episode on June 23). HotD‘s previous best showing was 1.02 billion minutes midway through its first season. Streaming figures for the show don’t include linear viewing on HBO.
The 1.23 billion minutes for House of the Dragon placed it fourth overall for the week, behind repeat leader Bridgerton (2.47 billion minutes), Your Honor (1.95 billion) and Prime Video’s The Boys (1.29 billion). About 60 percent of Bridgerton’s total came from the final four episodes of season three, which premiered June 13. Former Showtime series Your Honor also continued to build, growing by 3 percent week to week on Netflix and Paramount+. The Boys improved as well, adding...

With 1 billion minutes watched, “Bridgerton” Season 3 was the most-watched streaming original of the week of June 21-27, which marked the final four episodes’ second full week of availability. The achievement was unsurprising, as the Shonda Rhimes-produced Netflix drama has been dominating Luminate’s charts (as well as Nielsen’s and Netflix’s own) since the first four episodes of Season 3 were released in May. Once again, both previous seasons continued to chart, with Season 2 in eighth place and Season 1 at the bottom.
Making a strong debut on the chart was “America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders,” a Netflix docuseries that was watched for 687 million minutes in its first full week of availability. It was followed by another docuseries, “Perfect Wife: The Mysterious Disappearance of Sherri Papini,” which his 509 million minutes watched in the same amount of time.

In its first week of availability on Hulu, “Perfect Wife: The Mysterious Disappearance of Sherri Papini” reached 3.6 million views.
This marks the most-watched Hulu docuseries ever, according to the streamer, which calculates views by dividing the total amount of time a project is watched by its runtime.
As exclusively reported by Variety, the most recent title Hulu touted as its nonfiction record-holder was “Captive Audience: A Real American Horror Story,” the 2022 docuseries about the 1972 kidnapping of seven-year-old Steven Stayner. An exact number of views was not provided, though the streamer did share at the time that it calculated its rankings based on each title’s first month of viewership, rather than its first week as with “Perfect Wife.”
“Perfect Wife,” which premiered on June 20, tells the story of the 2016 Sherri Papini kidnapping hoax. The official logline reads, “Keith and Sherri Papini’s seemingly idyllic family life is shattered when Sherri...

After last week saw the return of larger-than-life series like “The Boys” and “House of the Dragon,” this week is all about real life, and by that I mean the new releases worth watching are all of the non-fiction variety. If that’s not for you, there are new episodes of the aforementioned shows to watch. But if you’re curious about the world, there is quite the buffet awaiting you, beginning with Amazon’s “Federer: Twelve Final Days.”
Now, it can be argued that one of the greatest athletes of all time (and perhaps the greatest men’s tennis player in history) deserved a longer farewell tour and accompanying documentary, but it’s too late for that. The film, which clocks in at 87 minutes and is now streaming on Prime Video, traces the days leading up to Roger Federer’s retirement in 2022 at the Laver Cup, where he and rival-slash-close friend,...
