Netflix has been churning out some interesting documentaries from India, and this content is unearthing many stories that have been forgotten by the audience. Since the advent of the internet and technology, plenty of stories from three or four decades ago have resurfaced on Ott platforms in the form of television shows and films. Netflix India, in the past few years, has been way ahead of any other Ott platform in India when it comes to producing and releasing true crime documentaries.
The Indian Predator series, House of Secrets: The Burari Deaths, The Hunt for Veerappan, and The Karma Killings, must be among the best-researched documentaries on the platform. Curry & Cyanide: The Jolly Joseph Case, a Netflix India original documentary film directed by Christy Tom, is about a series of murders that took place in a sleepy town in Kerala between 2002 and 2014. New Delhi, Aug 21 (Ians) Filmmaker Selvamani Selvaraj, who has directed the docu-series ‘The Hunt For Veerappan’, has opened up on how he was “fascinated” with the story of Veerappan and his “fractured psyche”, saying that he wanted to understand how a brutal person can be loved so much.
The biographical docu-series explores the untold story of India’s infamous outlaw – a husband, father, leader and wanted criminal. While the image of the man with a handlebar moustache and gaunt cheekbones is well-known, there are many other aspects of Veerappan’s life that have remained hidden in the dark forests of south India.
Selvamani spoke to Ians about how he envisioned the idea behind the series.
“What fascinated me towards the story was Veerappan and his fractured psyche from the stories I had heard growing up. I couldn’t get a complete picture and I wanted to piece it together for myself.

Netflix has announced a slate of Japanese dating, comedy and reality shows, part of a wider push into Asian unscripted content, which also takes in South Korea and India.
Speaking at a showcase in Seoul, Netflix Japan content manager Dai Ota highlighted the importance of unscripted content in the wider Japan market, accounting for 70% of linear programming in 2022, with sketch comedy, dating and other reality formats among the most popular.
Heading Netflix’s Japan slate are romance-themed reality shows including Is She The Wolf?, a co-production with Japanese broadcaster Abema; a second season of Love Village; and a new hybrid format, Love Like A K-Drama. The latter show, which starts streaming from November 28, pairs up four Japanese actresses and four Korean actors to see if real-life romance can be sparked by a Korean drama-inspired kissing scene.

ReviewAs the serpentine history of Veerappan spanning two decades unravels, the series certainly keeps you on the edge of your seat. Veerappan is an eerily familiar name to those of us who grew up in the 1990s. He was a contemporary legend, presented to us as the proverbial Big Bad hiding out deep in the forests. The stories of his do-gooding also came to be reported, amusing the public imagination. After his eventual capture and killing by the police, the question remained: who was he after all? The reality of who he was, the grey areas of state excesses, and the mystery that continues to shroud him, are what Netflix’s new documentary drama, The Hunt for Veerappan, attempts to take on. The four-episode series, directed by Selvamani Selvaraj, opens strangely not with the many headlines Veerappan made over the years, but with romance. From the real-life Muthulakshmi Veerappan, we...

Directed by Selvamani Selvaraj, one of Netflix’s most recent offerings is a compelling Indian documentary titled The Hunt for Veerappan. This four-part documentary series emerges as a captivating exploration of one of India’s most notorious criminals, Veerappan. However, this documentary goes beyond a mere exposé of Veerappan’s criminal exploits and adeptly serves as a mirror, projecting back to the audience the intricate dynamics at play among law enforcement tactics, societal tensions, and the delicate equilibrium between criminal activity and the quest for justice. The series goes beyond Veerappan’s life to reveal how different factors influence law and order. Selvaraj’s skilled direction prompts us to think about the bigger consequences and ethical questions that emerge when society seeks revenge against criminals. This documentary shows the strength of storytelling, exposing both the grim aspects of humanity and the intricate challenges in the ongoing battle between crime and justice.

“The Hunt for Veerappan” is a four-part docuseries on Netflix directed by Selvamani Selvaraj. It tells the story of the rise and fall of Veerappan, a notorious sandalwood smuggler and bandit who terrorized the forests of South India for over two decades.
India is a vast and mysterious land, rich in nuances and stories. This time, Netflix takes us into the life of India’s most infamous criminal: Koose Munisamy Veerappan, a poacher with the heart of an untamed tiger.
Veerappan, the Richard Parker of poachers, was the first to kill an elephant in those 15,000 square kilometers. He was the boldest, the most fearless – feared and pursued, yet also admired. A brutal criminal capable of exterminating all the elephants in the forest, with his criminal count reaching a thousand.
But this was only the beginning. Things escalated further, leading to a confrontation with the Indian authorities, a massacre, and ultimately,...
