Usually, I don't review shows until they've finished but I'm at a bit of a loose end, so I thought I'd review this Channel 5 attempt to capture some of that sweet sweet "Only Connect" audience with their own lateral thinking quiz show.
Presented by Lucy Worsley, the show sees the six competitors form two teams of three. They compete as a team for five rounds, then the winning team play head-to-head to declare the shows overall winner. The rounds including lateral wordplay, maths under pressure, a memory challenge, and some general knowledge.
From an aesthetic standpoint, the set is basic but functional. Lucy Worsley is a genial host - though for my taste the show has a bit too much chat with the contestants, which I don't particularly care for. I liked the rounds that the show has, with the exception of the maths one. One feature of that round is that it each contestant has to get a question right, before it moves on to the next player - this can lead to an awful lot of dead air as people struggle to do mental arithmetic on the fly. I'd drop this round altogether or switch it to a buzzer round.
Generally, though, I only care whether I can answer the question on the show and in that regard (with the exception of that maths round) it's fun enough that enjoy playing along every time. It is handy to have recorded it though, so I can skip through the adverts, as well as some of the chat.
I'll happily keep watching it for as long as they want to make it.
