X/Y offers moody disjointed vignettes that lacks narrative impetus.
It is directed, written and stars Ryan Piers Williams. He plays Mark whose marriage with Silvia (his real life spouse America Ferrera) unravels when she confesses to an affair.
Mark leaves to stay with a British friend Jake who is a model/photographer/artist. Jake is popular with women but also full of self loathing.
Meanwhile Silvia confides with her sister Jen about the break up. Only to get into an argument over Jen's own issues such as her one night stands with strangers.
X/Y is meant to be a flick through of the lives of young people in metropolitan New York. It is morose and uninvolving. There is casual sex and the characters are unlikeable. Silvia has an affair with a work colleague who tells Silvia that no one likes working with her.
I am sure the film was a labour of love for Williams. After all Mark is a filmmaker whose latest script attracts the attention of a major studio. His agent tells him that he just needs to make a few alterations if he wants an audience of more than five hipsters.
It seems X/Y never managed to widen its audience.
