Each ghost in the film is based on a mythological Chinese ghost: * The actor is a diao si gui, a lost soul who wanders aimlessly after a suicide by hanging. * The old man is a jiangshi, a vampire ghost. * The old woman is a gui po, a ghost who means well and wants to help but can take her methods too far. * The twins are nu gui, vengeful spirits after suffering sexual assault and suicide. * The mother is a di fu ling, a ghost eternally bound to a location that drove her to suicide.
Actor Siu-Ho Chin wanted to appear looking "tired" in the movie, so, he requested to be awaken before every 3rd hour after sleeping to prevent him from hitting a REM cycle. Director Juno Mak made the first call to his hotel room to wake him up everyday.
Actors Anthony Chan, Siu-Ho Chin, Richard Ng, Fat Chung and Billy Lau all previously starred in the original Mr. Vampire film franchise.
The tall ghosts that cross the hallway carrying parasols are based on Chinese reapers. Three variations include: * A reaper that returns a soul 7 days after they die to home. They return the soul to their home to say goodbye to loved ones before being taken to hell. * Reapers that collect a lost soul that has wandered for 7 days. * A reaper on the hunt for wandering souls that they trap in their parasol. It is used as a net. This is where the superstition originates that you must not open one indoors should it contain a ghost.
The tower block of apartments used for the film is the On Wah Industrial Building in Hong Kong.
