On the last day of filming, Michael Jai White asked the writer/director what inspired him to make Sunset Superman. The director said he was a massive fan and wrote it specifically for him because he was heartbroken by the downfall of the He Never Died series. As a catharsis, he wanted to see "Michael Jai White punch as many people as possible in 80 minutes." He longed to capture a style akin to John Carpenter's "Big Trouble in Little China," while Jai White, unaware of the writer/director's intentions, used Kurt Russell's Jack Burton from Big Trouble in Little China as an inspiration for JT.

On the second day of filming, the original assistant director was heavily inebriated while driving the director, cinematographer, and script supervisor to the set. Realizing the danger they were in while speeding and swerving on a highway, the director gently "directed" the intoxicated driver to pull over. The AD stumbled out of the car and immediately fell asleep when hoisted into the passenger's seat-this left production without an AD until a replacement stepped in weeks later. Later, a note was delivered to the director from the original AD thanking him for taking care of him. The director then ripped the note apart, ate it, and stated, "That's something considering I wanted to beat the shit out of him."

The budget was delivered late, so the producer and director had to pay what they could for pre-production out of pocket, reducing the shooting schedule to about three weeks. This also meant there were legitimately no rehearsals. All the actors met their co-stars the day they shot.
