Alain Resnais was unable to attend the film's world premiere at the 2014 Berlin Film Festival for health reasons. He died less than a month later, shortly before the film's opening day in France.
The characters are rehearsing "Relatively Speaking," an early play by Alan Ayckbourn, who wrote the play that the film is based on.
