Things Will Be Different
A brother and sister, long separated, reconnect in order to pull off a heist, but nothing turns out quite as expected in Michael Felker’s festival hit Things Will Be Different. Starring Adam David Thompson and Riley Dandy, it sees the two take refuge in a house with a peculiar property: when its clocks are reset just so, it can travel back in time. They plan to use this to hide out in the late Seventies until the fuss has died down in their own time. When I met Michael, I told him that this seemed to me like a far more realistic use for time travel than most of what we see in films.
“I got the general world building ideas from when I used to visit my old family farm,” he tells me. “I would pick up household objects and antiques and go ‘This used to be modern.

“Things Will Be Different,” (2024) the debut feature of writer-director Michael Felker, is an appetizer of many flavors. A neo-Western heist drama, along the lines of “Hell or High Water,” evading the Sci-Fi structural conformity of the time-travel genre while addressing the eternal challenge of defying fate. It is not an easy blend. The tightrope Felker walks on often has him flailing for balance. However, with a fine turn by the two lead actors, “Things Will Be Different” just about manages to avoid the fall. The film conjures more threads than the amount it could have used to weave neatly, opening up questions that go unanswered. Here we will try to address them.

In “Things Will Be Different,” of the breakout hits of SXSW 2024, Michael Felker found the Holy Grail that eludes many first-time filmmakers: a high concept story that not only works within a low budget, but is actually more convincing because of its minimalist production value.
The film follows an estranged brother and sister who reunite to pull off a robbery together before hiding in an interdimensional safe house that is immune to the laws of time and space. They’re forced to spend two weeks hanging out on a 19th century farm, communicating with other time periods through a lo-fi tape recorder in the basement, before returning to life as they knew it.
The framing device allows the film to believably combine a sophisticated sci-fi mythology with a single location that made for a practical shoot. Like so many independent films, it was conceived as a product of unique circumstances.

Time travel narratives pair really well with tropes involving second chances and emotional reconciliations—probably because, between the possibility of starting things anew and the reality of the inevitable, inescapable whims of fate—lies a sliver of hope, which makes for a really interesting premise. Michael Felker’s directorial debut, Things Will Be Different, is a taut, sleek sci-fi thriller that uses the complexities of time travel to explore dysfunctional relationship dynamics between siblings and proves itself to be a remarkable entry amidst dozens of similar ventures. While replicating the temporal shenanigans of Rian Johnson’s Looper, Felker uses atmospheric isolation and minimal use of characters to evoke a sense of dread, which works really well in this bare-bones, minimalistic sci-fi venture.

Warner Bros’ Joker: Folie à Deux will look to repeat the success of its predecessor at the UK and Ireland box office this weekend as it opens in 725 cinemas.
The sequel, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, launches wider than 2019’s Joker which debuted in 668 locations. That title opened with £12.6m and ended on £58m, making it the highest-grossing territory outside of North America. It currently remains the most successful R-rated feature with Disney’s Deadpool & Wolverine catching up fast on £57.4m.
Described as a musical psychological drama, Joker: Folie à Deux sees Phoenix return as iconic DC villain Arthur Fleck.

Beyond Joker: Folie à Deux (October 4) and Smile 2 (October 18), this month is light on studio power. The indies are surely champing at the bit to fill the gap with a slew of festival darlings getting their limited releases in before Oscar voting. Searchlight, Focus Features, Neon, and A24 are all jockeying for position to earn your wallet’s trust; choose wisely.
While their posters can easily help steer your attention away from the likes of Venom: The Last Dance (October 25) and its glossy CGI, the question is whether they can also do so from each other. Or––and this is ultimately the correct choice––you can simply go and see them all.

The notion of being “stuck in the past” applies both literally and figuratively to the siblings with a shared troubled history in “Things Will Be Different,” the feature directorial debut of editor Michael Felker. The title of this proficiently tense, lo-fi time-travel crime thriller reads like a promise of change, of overcoming past mistakes with the hope of an improved future. And it’s around that human need for second chances, to amend, that the filmmaker wraps his science-fiction proposition for what’s mostly an engaging two-hander.
In the aftermath of a robbery — not their first illicit act — Joseph (Adam David Thompson) and Sidney (Riley Dandy), an estranged brother and sister, head to an isolated farmhouse where old manual clocks and a seemingly ordinary closet allow them to travel back in time. If they wait a couple weeks before returning to their own timeline (which Sydney must do to care...

Science fiction narratives are often confused with merely futuristic depictions of our world. While technological advancements can be a part of such stories, they are essentially meant to be the building blocks for a narrative rather than just a flourish in the film’s aesthetic appeal. “Things Will Be Different” is a film that understands this. This low-key sci-fi thriller happens in places, not too dissimilar to our present world. All the film needed was a house, a farm, and its key performers to do the trick. It uses a scientific possibility to analyze our fear of fate and its consequences.
“Things Will Be Different” takes place in a relatively desolate town and revolves around two siblings on the run. After a close-call robbery attempt, Sidney (Riley Dandy) and Joseph (Adam David Thompson), two estranged siblings, reunite at a local diner. They briefly discuss their immediate plan and what they...

Warner Bros. delivered the biggest hit of September with “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” and they hope to follow that up with “Joker: Folie à Deux,” the oddly-titled sequel to the 2019 global hit “Joker,” which grossed $1 billion worldwide with $335 million of that coming from North America after a $96.2 million opening. Writer-director Michael Felker’s lo-fi sci-fi thriller starts in fleet-footed fashion, with its two main characters already on the run. They meet up at a diner toting a pair of rifles and bags full of cash, then head out into the woods and change their clothes before moving on to their ultimate destination, a remote farmhouse where they intend to hole up. Things Will Be Different whisks us briskly through this opening, using the clipped conversations between the duo to tell us everything we really need to know about them.

Things Will Be Different Lands on VOD and in Theaters!: "When estranged siblings Joseph (Adam David Thompson) and Sidney (Riley Dandy) rendezvous at a local diner after a close-call robbery, they hightail it to an abandoned farmhouse that transports them to a different time in order to escape the law. Their getaway is derailed when an unknown and cryptic metaphysical force emerges and blocks them from returning home. Trapped on the puzzling plot of land, their captor makes it clear that no one can leave until their deadly demands are met. What results from their entrapment not only bends the forces of spacetime—forcing the two to question everything they know about their own reality—but pushes their familial bonds to the breaking point."

The world-renowned Trieste Science+Fiction Festival, Italy’s foremost event dedicated to science fiction, has unveiled its 2024 poster designed by acclaimed cartoonist Michele Rech, better known as Zerocalcare. Scheduled to run from October 29th to November 3rd, this year’s festival promises to delve into the evolving intersection of technology and humanity, inspired by the rapid advancements in Generative Artificial Intelligence.
The new poster by Zerocalcare poignantly captures the tension between the utopian dreams of past generations and the potentially dystopian future ushered in by AI. As Zerocalcare explains, “The poster tells the story of the distance between how I imagined science fiction as a kid and how my expectations have evolved: we used to think that in the future machines would do the alienating and exhausting jobs, leaving humans free to dedicate themselves to the arts. If 2024 is the year American voters will experience a sense of déjà vu at the ballot box, it’s also likely to go down as the year that fans of indie genre cinema will feel it at the box office. From Sundance to SXSW, a surprising number of films have had fun with the concept of time, whether in terms of history literally repeating itself or presenting new angles on the same set of events.
Exec-produced by filmmaker duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, and written-directed by their longtime editor Michael Felker, Things Will Be Different — as its title suggests — has an even more rarefied take, using time as a hiding place, a surreal and ingenious conceit that adds a creepy air of mystery to its otherwise solidly sci-fi scenario.

Over the last decade or so, Marvel has had a knack for snagging independent filmmakers with a lot of buzz, critical acclaim, and innovative creative voices to join their stable. Before James Gunn was at the helm of the "Guardians of the Galaxy" trilogy, he was the guy who got his start writing "Tromeo and Juliet" for Lloyd Kaufman. And he's not alone. Scott Derrickson, Jon Watts, Taika Waititi, Cate Shoreland, Destin Daniel Cretton, Chloé Zhao, Nia DaCosta, and so many others were still stars on the rise when Marvel came calling.
Fan reactions are typically divided with one camp worried this marks the end of their independent visions in favor of corporate-driven storytelling, while others are thrilled to see directors they love getting one hell of a paycheck. Theoretically, this should give them the creative freedom to make whatever film they want next, like the director's version of what...

Exclusive: Martin Kaszubowski’s feature film Earlybird has been acquired by Good Deed Entertainment for worldwide rights.
Shot in Milwaukee, the live theater-themed comedy stars Joshua Koopman, Chloe Skoczen, Mark Fearon (Chicago Fire), Meredith Johnston and a breakout performance from stage actor Julie Pope. The film played to sold-out audiences at both IFFBoston and the Milwaukee Film Festival.
In Earlybird, a desperate artistic director aims to revive his struggling theater with off-the-wall stage productions, all the while losing sight of why he chose this life in the first place.
“We’re thrilled to include Earlybird as a part of Good Deed’s growing slate of worldwide releases,” said Erik Donley, EVP of Acquisitions and Distribution at Gde. “Director and writer Martin Kaszubowski did a fantastic job executing this film and we cannot wait to...

From the panicked voiceover conversation that plays over a black screen in the first moments of “Things Will Be Different,” it’s clear that Sydney (Riley Dandy) and Joseph (Adam Thompson) are in some serious trouble. After pulling off a lucrative robbery by the skin of their teeth, the two siblings can almost feel the grains of sand slipping through their hourglasses as the sounds of police sirens grow closer. With the world closing in around them, the only things working in their favor are the massive bag of cash in her hand and the fact that he thinks they can time travel their way to freedom.
Through his various criminal dealings that remain unexplained, Joseph has negotiated access to a safe house that can shield its inhabitants from the laws of time and space. It might look like a simple farmhouse far removed from civilization, but that’s exactly...

Very obviously trying to emulate the DIY approach of producers Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, Michael Felker’s lo-fi mind f*ck “Things Will Be Different” is both a fascinating debut and somewhat derivation of the filmmakers’ body of work. Clearly influenced by the Benson/Moorhead aesthetic and style, and sometimes slavish to their approach in a way that makes the film feel fairly familiar, this tiny, one-setting film may bring up more questions than answers.

Writer/Director/Editor Michael Felker knows his way around time-shifting, metaphysical labors of love, having edited Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s Something in the Dirt, Synchronic, The Endless, and Spring. Felker’s feature directorial debut, Things Will Be Different, seamlessly fits into the Benson/Moorhead cinematic universe, introducing a fractured sibling relationship put through the physical and emotional wringer when they play with forces they don’t quite understand.
Estranged siblings Sidney and Joseph fall into old habits like no time has passed at all when they rendezvous at a diner. That’s largely due to Joseph having a large bag of cash grabbed from an armed robbery, and the authorities are rapidly closing in. The siblings quickly make their way to an abandoned farmhouse with instructions on how to escape their current reality. The plan is to wait out the cops from the safety of an alternate timeline,...

As a fan who’s always ready to warp into the realms of time travel movies, my anticipation for Things Will Be Different was as high as my hopes for a DeLorean to appear on my driveway. Helmed by Michael Felker, in what marks his leap from editing to directing, with frequent collaborators Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson (Something in The Dirt) producing, this film is a time-twisting tale that packs a lot more than just temporal leaps.
Things Will Be Different throws estranged siblings Joseph (Adam David Thompson) and Sidney (Riley Dandy) into a temporal tangle that’s more twisted than spaghetti in a black hole. After a diner meet-up goes awry, they find refuge in an abandoned farmhouse that’s more than it appears. What initially seems like a lucky escape turns into a chronal puzzle, ensnaring them in a time they can’t easily zip back from.

Freddy Macdonald’s Sew Torn is a high-stakes crime thriller for everyone that grew up obsessed with choose-your-own-adventure novels. Working through three wildly different timelines, the story follows a mobile seamstress presented with a (truly) life-changing opportunity. After stumbling across a drug deal gone wrong, Barbara (Eve Connolly) is faced with a choice: commit the perfect crime, call the police, or simply drive away. Which would you choose?
Luckily, you’re not left with any lingering questions about what would have happened in either of the three scenarios, because you’re gifted the chance to witness them all! Following the threads of each decision, Sew Torn is divided into nice clean chapters that make for a series of very unfortunate events. In fact, the film opens on the aftermath of each possible timeline, and none look especially promising. It seems each choice leads to ruin but it isn’t the destination that counts,...
