Bird Box is from a screenplay written by Eric Heisserer (Eric Heisserer), and based on the 2014 novel of the same name by Josh Malerman (Josh Malerman). The movie's plot is similar to the novel's with some minor differences.
The movie and the book don't reveal whether the responsible is a monster, a microbe, an unknown phenomenon (either natural or made by a human), an alien, a demon, etc. However, in the book, the public believes the epidemic is caused by "creatures" and the situation referred to as "The Problem."
In the book, Malorie and Jules belief that dogs are immune to the disease, only for this to be proven false when a dog goes mad and kills itself after seeing a creature. In the movie, there is a scene of folks walking with dogs. But this does not prove if the dogs (or any animals other than birds) are invulnerable to the entities.
This was explained in the novel when Malorie becomes resigned to the reality that she will have to raise the children alone. She feels that names are an unnecessary luxury and decides to refer to them as "Boy" and "Girl".
Because the "creatures" don't have a physical form so, they can't do things like opening door or windows. Also, even if they don't have a physical form, they do have some degree of physical strength, but not enough to break in into a house.
The sane person commits suicide if he/she sees an entity. Whereas the insane people become obsessed with entities, see them as "beautiful" things and oblige the uninfected ones to look at them. While the entity has no impact over blindfolded folks and blind people, still it can imitate voices in order to deceive them.
In Australia, Netflix originally partnered with four Twitch streamers in performing what they called a Bird Box challenge, in which they would play some popular video games while blindfolded. However, the challenge became widely mimicked on the Internet by individuals wearing blindfolds while trying to do ordinary activities, causing injuries to some. In response, Netflix released several messages over social media advising people not to undertake the challenge or hurt themselves. Nevertheless, in January 2019, a 17-year-old girl in a blindfold taking part in the craze drove into oncoming traffic in Utah and crashed her car, prompting state police to issue the same warning as Netflix.
