- Professor Coke Norris is killed in a hit and run. At the same time Thursday is perturbed to learn that the new owner of the Moonlight Room night club is Vic Kasper,a London gangster with whom he has history. Morse finds proof that Coke Norris visited the club as well as discovering that he was opposed to the sale of college land to build a housing estate. The murder of a cigarette girl from the club used in a blackmail plot to expedite the sale leads Thursday to Kasper as Morse discovers the reason for his superior's hatred of the man and they combine to act when Thursday's daughter is endangered. Morse then works out the real reason for the professor's murder before sitting his sergeant's exams.—don @ minifie-1
- DI Fred Thursday and DC Morse investigate the death of Alistair Coke Morris an Oxford classics professor whose body was found on the side of the road. It has the appearance of a hit-and-run but the medical examiner finds no injuries to the lower limbs and Morse suspects he may have been killed elsewhere and the body then dumped where it was found. Meanwhile, Thursday and Morse investigate a beating at a local nightclub and learn that Vic Kasper is now running the place. Thursday has had to deal with Kasper before and tells Morse in no uncertain terms to stay away from the man and concentrate on the hit-and-run case. The two cases are connected however and relate to a proposed new housing and commercial development to be built on college lands. It's all somewhat more complex than first meets the eye but Morse sorts through it. In the middle of all of this Morse is having to study for his sergeant's exams and has to go out of town when his father falls ill.—garykmcd
