The third act twist in “Conclave” has nothing on the labyrinth of secrets buried in Grace Hughes-Hallett’s documentary “The Secret of Me,” an intricate, shocking, and deeply affecting documentary about a medical scandal that has rocked the intersex community worldwide since the late 1960s. Rest assured that the subjects at the heart of this film are granted — and invited to demonstrate — a degree of interiority that was missing from the catty pope movie.

As much as the queer umbrella shelters a wide variety of non-hetero and non-cis identities, there’s been a glaring lack of popular and societal understanding — let alone acceptance or cinematic representation — of intersex folks, or what intersex even means (Julie Cohen’s energetic “Every Body” being a notable recent exception). It stands to reason that a scandal that has ruptured the fabric of the intersex community would also receive partial, inconsistent, and/or niche attention.

Starz has announced the movie and TV titles that will be available on the service in February. The Starz February 2025 schedule includes the climactic season finale of The Couple Next Door, starring Sam Heughan from Outlander.

Oscar-nominated filmmaker Nicole Newnham (“Crip Camp”) is at work on her next documentary — “Tunnel 29,” about a secret escape tunnel built under the Berlin Wall in 1962.

The film, co-produced by NBC News Studios and Story Force Entertainment, will chronicle the story of a group of students who risked their lives and defied the Iron Curtain by digging a tunnel under the Berlin Wall, enabling 29 East Germans to escape to the West.

“‘Tunnel 29’ will cinematically immerse the audience in the fraught and tense time when the world grappled with the trauma and consequences of the Wall and the Cold War — a time that bears an astonishing resemblance to today,” says Newnham.

In the early 1960s, German students began digging a tunnel more than the length of a football field from West to East Berlin. As danger and setbacks mounted, they sought funding to continue the dig and help ensure their safety. In...

Sheffield DocFest today announced the full industry program for its 31st edition, a lineup of panel discussions, marketplace sessions, live pitch forums, the annual Filmmaker Challenge, marketplace rough cuts and more.

The industry program runs concurrently with the festival from June 12-17. DocFest last week revealed a slate of 109 films that will be showcased in the 2024 event, including 49 world premieres.

“The Industry program dives into the business of documentary in all its many forms,” a release noted, “complimenting the previously announced film program, exploring the skills and techniques behind many of this year’s films…” [Scroll for the full lineup].

Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling “Poor Things” – Willem Dafoe

Weekly Commentary: Another deathmatch between two movies — Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein biopic “Maestro” and Yorgos Lanthimos’ sci-fi comedy “Poor Things.”

“Maestro” won big at the Makeup and Hair guild while “Poor Things” took home the BAFTA prize.

Searchlight’s All of Us Strangers leads the 2024 Dorian Awards film nominations with nine, followed by the Warner Bros juggernaut Barbie with seven. Netflix’s May December is next with six noms, A24’s Past Lives (five) and Searchlight’s Poor Things (four). All five will compete for the marquee Best Film of the Year prize, presented by Galeca: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics.

All of Us Strangers will face off against MGM’s Bottoms, Mubi/Sbs’ Passages, Netfix’s Rustin (Netflix and Amazon MGM’s Saltburn for LGBTQ Film of the Year.

Andrew Haigh’s “All of Us Strangers” led nominations Monday for the 15th Dorian Film Awards, as voted on by the Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics, with nine nominations, including Film of the Year, LGBTQ Film of the Year, Director of the Year, co-lead Andrew Scott and supporting actress Claire Foy.

The group’s more than 500 entertainment critics and journalists also handed out nods to “Barbie,” which scored seven nominations; followed by Todd Haynes’ “May December” with six; and Celine Song’s “Past Lives” with five, including Director of the Year.

While the Oscars overlooked “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig this year, she’s very much in the running at this awards show, as is Song, Haynes, and Haigh.

There are talks of a memorial, among other commemorations. Across the river, bus drivers are on strike and a young, self-proclaimed “Jersey girl” rides a trucker in the parking lot of the New Jersey Turnpike gas station. As Ponyboi (played by newcomer River Gallo) amps his client up with theatrical ad libs, the stout john offers a note: Could Ponyboi turn it down a notch and consider speaking less?

This droll opening scene, which begins with the sweaty tension of sex before landing on smirking humor, is emblematic of Esteban Arango’s feature Ponyboi. Premiering at Sundance in the U.S. Dramatic Competition and written by Gallo, its intersex lead who uses they/them pronouns, Ponyboi revises the crime drama by putting...

Depending on how you look at it, “Ponyboi” is either a Trojan horse for exploring nonbinary gender identity or a hackneyed crime movie with a radically unorthodox queer protagonist. Either way, it’s a sordid yet stylish showcase for intersex actor (and activist) River Gallo, who uses “they/them” pronouns and sees the project as an opportunity to educate audiences about the social and psychological aspects of exhibiting both male and female traits in a world that classifies people in one box or the other.

It’s ironic therefore that, apart from Gallo’s category-defying title character, the rest of the ensemble is populated by such familiar stereotypes. Sparkling like a rhinestone in the rough, Ponyboi stands out amid a lineup of cartoon gangsters, tough-guy dealers and gum-smacking prostitutes — lowlifes recycled from a hundred late-night cable movies with superficially similar plots.

On the heels of picking up a Governors Award at Monday night’s Emmys telecast, GLAAD has unveiled the nominees for the 35th annual GLAAD Media Awards.

It’s a huge list that singles out 310 nominees across 33 categories including some standouts of awards season like films All of Us Strangers and The Color Purple and buzzy TV shows Fellow Travelers starring Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey and The Last of Us toplined by Pedro Pascal. Beyoncé’s name is also in the mix, thanks to special recognition for her concert documentary, Renaissance: A Film by Beyonce from AMC Theatres. It’s not a new experience for the superstar as she was moved to tears in 2019 while accepting GLAAD’s Vanguard Award alongside Jay-Z.

Two days after the Television Academy honored GLAAD with its 2023 Governors Award at the Primetime Emmys, the group has released the nominees for the 35th annual GLAAD Media Awards. See the full list below.

The winning LGBTQ stories and artists will be honored at GLAAD’s dual 2024 ceremonies ceremonies March 14 at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills and May 11 at the Hilton Midtown in New York City. The 33 categories span film, TV, music, theater, podcasts, video games, comic books and journalism.

The 10 movies vying for the Outstanding Film – Wide Theatrical Release prize are All of Us Strangers, American Fiction, Anyone but You, The Blackening, Bottoms, The Color Purple, It’s a Wonderful Knife, Knock at the Cabin, Moving On and Shortcomings.

On the TV side, the Outstanding Drama Series race will be among 9-1-1: Lone Star, The Chi, Chucky, Doctor Who, Good Trouble, Grey’s Anatomy, Quantum Leap, Riverdale, Station 19 and Yellowjackets.

321 films are in contention for this year’s Academy Awards, while 265 features are eligible in the best picture category, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Monday as it released its annual “reminder list” for members.

To be eligible in the general categories, films (meaning a runtime of more than 40 minutes) must open in a commercial theater in at least one of the following areas: Los Angeles County; the city of New York; the Bay Area; Chicago, Illinois; Miami, Florida; and Atlanta, Georgia, between Jan. 1, 2023 and Dec. 31, 2023. Additionally, it must complete a minimum qualifying run of seven consecutive days in the same venue.

To be eligible for the best picture category specifically, the movies must be eligible for the general entry and have “submitted a confidential Academy Representation and Inclusion Standards entry form.” Additionally, the film must meet two of the four standards required, in addition to the theatrical component.

Cinetic Media has signed directors Julie Cohen, Oren Jacoby and Betsy West. The management company will represent the Oscar-nominated filmmakers and their documentary company, Storyville Films, across all types of media.

Storyville Films was founded by Jacoby to produce documentaries and series driven by “strong personal narratives of conscience, courage and innovation.” Jacoby, Cohen and West serve as Storyville’s directors. The Academy has revealed the list of eligible films for consideration in best animated, documentary and international feature of the year, encompassing a broad range of blockbusters and critically acclaimed titles.

GKids’ “The Boy and the Heron,” Pixar’s “Elemental,” Sony’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” and Illumination’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” are among the 33 animated films in the running. This is up from 27 in 2023, when “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” took home the prize.

The eventual five nominees are determined by members of the shorts and animation branch, and any Academy members outside the branch who wish to participate. The number of outside members who opt in is unknown. All films submitted for animated feature also qualify for the Academy Awards in other categories, including best picture.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday unveiled the films eligible for consideration for the 2024 Oscars in the categories of Documentary Feature Film and International Feature Film and Animated Feature Film.

A total of 167 documentaries have made the cut for the 96th Academy Awards, while 88 countries are eligible for the International Feature. Shortlists of 15 films in both categories will be revealed December 21.

In the Animated Feature race, 33 films are eligible for the 2024 race.

Final Oscar nominations will be revealed January 23, 2024, with the 96th Oscars to air Sunday, March 10 on ABC hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.

The DC universe will also be getting festive in December thanks to Merry Little Batman, an animated feature that sees Batman’s son, Damian Wayne, stumble upon a villainous plot on Christmas eve, one that may give him a chance to save the day when his dad isn’t around.

David Corvo, considered the driving force behind Dateline, NBC’s top-rated and longest-running primetime series, is stepping down as Senior Executive Producer at the end of the year. He will remain with NBC News as an adviser on various projects, reporting to Rebecca Blumenstein, President of Editorial at NBC News.

Corvo will be passing the torch to Liz Cole, President of NBC News Studios and executive producer of Dateline. Corvo and Cole “have worked together to make Dateline the gold standard in true crime reporting, and successfully expanded it from the network to broadcast and cable syndication, to its streaming channel Dateline 24/7, and to audio where it consistently tops Apple’s podcast charts,” Blumenstein said in a note to NBC staffers announcing Corvo’s pending departure.

SAG-AFTRA may still be on strike, but studios are, nevertheless, pushing their Oscar contenders to garner the adequate (and allowed) attention they need to land nominations.

One of the main methods is getting industry voters out to screenings and making films available on the Academy Screening Room and BAFTA screening platforms. With the two significant organizations banning physical DVD screeners, voting members rely on the respective digital viewing portals to catch up on some of this year’s contenders vying for awards consideration.

The Academy performs a heavy vetting process for each film that chooses to submit for consideration. Historically, over 300 movies are in the running for best picture consideration, with more films joining the fray over the next several months. Distributors are the ultimate decision-makers of when a movie is placed in the Academy Screening Room for viewing.

PBS’ “20 Days in Mariupol,” IFC’s “The Disappearance of Shere Hite” and MTV’s “The Eternal Memory” are among Doc NYC’s 14th edition featuring 114 features and 129 short films.

The shortlist for Doc NYC, the largest documentary festival in the U.S., was launched in 2012 and has become a key indicator and predictor for the Academy Awards’ best documentary feature category. Ten out of the last 11 winners for documentary feature were screened at the festival. In addition, 12 of the 15 shortlisted docs from 2022 were among its lineup.

Some other notable inclusions are Julie Cohen’s moving “Every Body” about the generation of intersex people living among us, Lisa Cortés’ “Little Richard: I Am Everything,” an intimate look at the queer rock ‘n’ roll legend, and Matthew Heineman’s “American Symphony,” an emotional look into the life of singer Jon Batiste as he prepares for his performance at Carnegie Hall.

Thirteen-year-old Doc NYC, America’s largest documentary festival, has revealed its influential 15-film Short List. The festival will run its main lineup of 114 features and 129 short films in-person November 8-16 in New York City’s IFC Center, Sva Theatre and Village East by Angelika and continue online until November 26 with films available to viewers across the U.S. All the films will have theatrical screenings at the festival, often with the directors in person.

Historically, most of the Doc NYC shortlist titles overlap with the Academy’s official 15-film Oscar Shortlist. With the notable exception of Netflix’s Oscar-winning “My Octopus Teacher,” for 11 years the festival has screened the documentary that went on to win the Academy Award, including “Navalny,” “Summer of Soul,” “American Factory,” “Free Solo,” “Icarus,” “O.J.: Made in America,” “Amy,” “Citizenfour,” “20 Feet From Stardom,” “Searching for Sugar Man,” and “Undefeated.” The festival has also screened 49 of the last 55 Oscar-nominated documentary features.

Madonna kicked off “The Celebration Tour” with the first of four performances at the O2 Arena in London on Saturday night.

A true retrospective performance, the career-spanning setlist touched on all eras of Madonna’s career and featured numerous songs that hadn’t been performed in decades. The show opened with only the second performance ever of “N0thing Really Matters” from Ray of Light. A few songs later, she dusted off “Live to Tell” from True Blue for the first time since 2006.

Madonna has officially kickstarted her Celebration Tour, and it was well worth the wait!

The 65-year-old Queen of Pop took the stage on Saturday night (October 14) at The O2 Arena in London, England for the first date of her long-awaited tour. The start date is several months later than expected after Madonna was hospitalized earlier this year for a serious bacterial infection.

With a discography that spans 40 years, there were so many songs that fans were hoping to hear from the superstar as she travels the country.

On Tuesday, October 10, 2023, at 8:00 Pm, Discovery will air the premiere episode of “Street Outlaws vs. the World,” Season 1, Episode 1, titled “USA vs. Everybody.” In this episode, viewers will witness an exciting showdown as the Outlaws respond to a series of call-out videos.

A new adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya will play the Lincoln Center Theater this spring.

The classic play will feature a new translation by Heidi Schreck, writer and star of What the Constitution Means to Me, and direction by Lila Neugebauer, who previously directed Kenneth Lonergan’s The Waverly Gallery on Broadway. Uncle Vanya will begin previews at the Vivian Beaumont Theater on April 2, 2024, with an opening night on April 24.

Casting will be announced at a later date.

The play, first produced in 1899, follows Sonya and her Uncle Vanya, whose lives working on their family farm are interrupted by the arrival of her father and his charismatic wife. It has been produced on Broadway many times, most recently in a 2000 revival with Laura Linney, Derek Jacobi and Roger Rees.

American Symphony will hold an in-person screening on Tuesday, Oct. 3 at the Culver Theater in Los Angeles, followed by a live Q&a with Heineman.

Sarah Paulson will return to Broadway in Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ play, Appropriate.

The play, directed by Lila Neugebauer, will begin previews at Second Stage’s Hayes Theater starting Nov. 28, with an opening set for Dec. 18. Paulson was last on Broadway in the 2010 run of Donald Margulies’ Collected Stories, where she starred opposite Linda Lavin, and most recently on stage in the 2013 off-Broadway run of Lanford Wilson’s Talley’s Folly.

This production is the Broadway debut for Jacobs-Jenkins, whose plays, Gloria and Everybody were both Pulitzer Prize finalists. Appropriate first premiered off Broadway in 2014 and won the Obie Award for best new American play, an honor it shared with An Octoroon, also written by Jacobs-Jenkins. Appropriate transferred to London for a limited run in 2019.
