When Netflix’s “Squid Game” became a global phenomenon in 2021, it catapulted its cast into the international spotlight. For Anupam Tripathi, the India-born, Korea-based actor who portrayed Ali Abdul, it marked a turning point in his career that has since spanned continents and industries.
“After ‘Squid Game,’ life has turned around a lot for me,” Tripathi tells Variety. “Everybody knows me in the Korean industry now.” Post “Squid Game,” Tripathi played the role of Prince Samir in Korean drama “King the Land,” which brought increased public recognition. “It happens every time,” he says of being recognized on the streets. “People remember me. They call me Ali. And sometimes after ‘King the Land,’ they started calling me Prince.”
The actor’s rise hasn’t been limited to Korea. He recently appeared in Anubhav Sinha’s hit Netflix India series “Ic 814: The Kandahar Hijack,” based on the real-life hijacking of an...

Episode 9 of Miss Night and Day is like a stop on a ride that we didn’t necessarily need. It’s not that it doesn’t progress the story at all; it does, but a lot of what happens in the episode could’ve been covered in half an episode with more revelations by the end. I suppose that’s what happens when K-dramas have 16 episodes now. Miss Night and Day is certainly shaping up to be one of my favorite shows of the year, but it all depends on how the mystery unfolds going forward and how the fantasy elements play out. Episode 9 of Miss Night and Day begins with the much-awaited kiss between Mi-Jin and Ji-Ung. See, we thought, just like in any other K-drama, the two leads would end up kissing in episode 8 of the series; however, Ji-Ung blocked the kiss with his hand (how could he?...

Netflix has released another huge batch of data about the time users spent with the service, and the top of its series list demonstrates how wide its global reach is.
The No. 1 series for the second half of 2023, as measured by Netflix’s view metric (total viewing hours divided by running time), was One Piece, a U.S.-Japanese co-production based on the enduringly popular manga and anime series. It amassed 71.6 million views following its Aug. 31 premiere. South Korean dramas cover almost every major genre, often mixing them into perfectly balanced but totally unexpected new sub-genres. However, they tend to give male characters more power than female characters.

Streaming subscription growth in the Southeast Asia region slowed dramatically in 2023, but revenue from those subscriptions grew at a robust rate, a new study has found.
The report from data analytics company Ampd, that is part of consultancy and research firm Media Partners Asia, shows that the region – that includes Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand – added only 1.3 million net new SVOD subscribers in 2023, compared with 11 million in 2022. But subscription revenues grew at 12.5% to $1.4 billion.
Netflix, Viu, Disney, WeTV, iQiyi and Prime Video had more than 75% of total premium VOD category viewership and SVOD subscriptions revenues across the region, the Southeast Asia Online Video Consumer Insights & Analytics report said. Netflix remains the leader with more than 45% viewership and subscription share in 2023.
Among local services, Indonesia’s freemium sports and local-drama based platform Vidio ended 2023 with the highest amount of subscribers in Indonesia and 15% SVOD revenue share in the market, second...

Sometimes the romances that are the most narratively interesting follow the creative path less traveled. While there’s a reason certain romantic tropes exist in Korean dramas — rivals-turned-lovers, fake relationships, and tension-filled love triangles are just a few of the go-tos — there’s a certain satisfaction that comes with watching characters fall in love in unexpected ways or under unique circumstances.
Of course, there’s nothing wrong with going the traditional K-romance route, especially for Valentine’s Day. Swoonworthy dramas like King the Land, Crash Landing on You, and Business Proposal are worthy of binge viewing if you’re in the mood for the classics. But if you’re looking for heart-fluttering love stories that venture outside the box, are a little left of center or feature leads that challenge norms, there’s plenty for you too.

My Demon is turning out to be quite funny and has some surprisingly real moments in its absurd plot. That is a very common K-drama trait as it is, but this show is looking to be more interesting than the description made it out to be. Additionally, we all love a good old-fashioned enemies-to-lovers K-drama with a simple plot and lots of swoon-worthy moments (King the Land being the biggest example of the year). It doesn’t hurt that the show doesn’t hesitate to have entire scenes of just Song Kang and Kim You-Jung’s perfect faces, and the fashion is, as always, impeccable. It’s nice to see a rich female lead for once (I’m glad that’s changing). Episode 1 of My Demon ended with Gu-Won and Do-Hee drowning but later waking up on a beach somewhere. That’s when Gu-Won realizes the cross on his hand is now on Do-Hee’s,...

2023 has brought a rekindling for K-drama lovers. Some of the shows we’ve got this year are very similar to those that came out back in 2013, but on the other hand, we also have some amazing new stuff that doesn’t fit any molds, but still impresses. Business Proposal, My Liberation Notes, King The Land, and Revenant are just a few of the many hit shows to come out this year, all easily available on Ott platforms. We were missing a modern fantasy on our list, though, and Destined With You is surely destined to take up that spot. At the end of Episode 4, Shin-Yu realized that the shaman told Hong-Jo that the two of them were destined for each other and their ties would never be severed. Will they accept this destiny easily?

In the middle of the lockdown, somewhere, K-dramas had lost their way a little bit. A lot of old fans thought things were changing too much and too fast, so they lost interest. But at the same time, many new fans came on board thanks to the Ott Hallyu wave and superhits like Squid Game. Call it gatekeeping or call it bias, Og fans have a special place for dramas that came out between 2013 and 2016, and recently, that spark has returned. King The Land is a classic example, and now it seems Destined With You is joining the ranks. Fantastical like Goblin and ridiculous like My Girlfriend Is A Gumiho. Right now, all the ingredients seem just right to make us fall in love with this show, like the love spell that Hong-Jo has cast in this episode.

The second half of Season 2 of “The Lincoln Lawyer” put the popular crime drama back atop the Top 10 charts for the week of July 31, as far as the English TV list, but how did “Heartstopper” Season 2 fare after its August 3 debut? Read on for this week’s analysis.
It seems appropriate that we start with the TV chart this week, since two returning shows topped the English series list with the second half of the second season of “Lincoln Lawyer” receiving 6.7 million views, followed by “Heartstopper” in second place with 6.1 million views. “Lincoln Lawyer” was the #1 watched show in the United States, Canada, four European countries, as well as Australia and New Zealand, while “Hearstopper” was #1 in Mexico and a few other European countries, including the United Kingdom.
“The Witcher” Season 3 took third place on that chart with 5.4 million views, followed by Season 3 of “Sweet Magnolias” with 2.9 million views. The...

Although what makes people so obsessed with K-dramas is the fact that they follow recognizable patterns and have the same kind of tropes to rely on that are simultaneously predictable yet somehow always exciting, there’s one trope that is extra special. Yeah, we like a decent second lead or a hyper-feminine villain (this one’s a bit of a stretch for sure), but we have a special place in our hearts for the best friends of the female lead who will do anything in their power to relentlessly support their friend through thick and thin. It’s possibly one of the biggest reasons some of these shows are popular. Friendships are just as important as romance, as K-drama writers are well aware. There’s something comforting about seeing three best friends living their best lives together, and everybody watching these shows aspires for that. While it may be unrealistic...

King the Land has become a beloved show thanks to the chemistry between the two leads and the nostalgic tropes in the series. As much as we liked the old shows that aired from 2013 to 2016, there were some elements that we despised because of their overly dramatic nature. King the Land uses those tropes and spins the wheel on them to subvert our expectations in the last moment and give us a happy love story with less drama and more fun. This list contains some of the shows that have the same level of mush that kept you hooked to King the Land, or they may have a similar plot line. There’s something about these shows that will help you fill the Jun-ho x Yoona-sized hole in your heart (at least a little bit of it). Japanese anime series took four of the top ten places in streaming service Netflix’s latest global chart of non-English-language shows. The top title of the week July 24-30 was Brazilian teen crime drama series “Sintonia,” in its fourth season.
Japanese animation series have long been key audience drivers in Japan and other parts of Asia. But their popularity – last year animated films filled four of the top five places at the Japanese theatrical box office – and their reach have been significantly expanded in the era of multi-territory streaming.
“Baki Hanma: Season 2” made its debut in the Netflix weekly chart in second place, with 6 million views worldwide and some 33 million hours watched. Although a few movies have been dominating Netflix’s film charts for weeks, the Top 10 English film chart for the week of July 24 had a new entry in the action-comedy “Hidden Strike,” starring Jackie Chan and John Cena. Meanwhile, “The Witcher” returned to first place for TV. Read on for this week’s analysis.
Directed by Scott Waugh (“Need for Speed”), “Hidden Strike” was produced independently and sold to Netflix for worldwide streaming rights, a wise purchase considering that the film received 22 million views since quietly hitting the streamer last Friday. It was the #1 watched movie in roughly 50 territories worldwide, and made the Top 10 in 73 countries. Oddly, the United States was not one of them, since that honor went to “They Cloned Tyrone,” which received 11.1 million views worldwide in its first full week on Netflix, enough for third place.

“Bird Box Barcelona” remained the most-watched film worldwide on Netflix, even as “The Out-Laws” and the newly released “They Cloned Tyrone” dominated the Top 10 English film chart for the week of July 17. Read on for this week’s analysis.
Normally, Netflix’s English language films have the biggest audiences across the globe on a weekly basis, but with 19 million views, “Bird Box Barcelona” was the most-watched film in much of Latin and South America, as well as Spain and ten other European countries, plus a good portion of Asia as well.
Because of that, the “Bird Box” prequel ended up faring better than the #1 English language film, “The Out-Laws,” starring Adam Devine, Nina Dobrev, Pierce Brosnan and Ellen Barkin, which continues to be quite popular with 12.1 million views last week. “The Out-Laws” was in the Top 10 for 93 countries, but only #1 in four European countries, as well as Israel.

Hollywood actors and writers may be on the picket line, due to the many issues they have with various studios and networks, but they can’t really say that all streamers aren’t reporting how their shows and movies are faring. That’s exactly what Netflix has been doing each and every week with the Top 10 charts for the week of July 10, giving a detailed report on its current films and series, as “The Lincoln Lawyer” took the top spot for the latter and the sci-fi sequel “Bird Box Barcelona” entered the charts.
We’ll begin with the latter, since “Bird Box Barcelona” is the sequel to one of Netflix’s biggest hits, 2018’s “Bird Box” starring Sandra Bullock, the streamer’s fourth most-watched feature film ever. In this case, as the title implies, the post-apocalyptic action has been moved to Spain, and thusly, it charted on the non-English film...

Chris Hemsworth‘s action-thriller “Extraction 2” has been dominating the English movie charts for weeks, but it was bumped by the new action-comedy “The Out-Laws,” starring Adam Devine, Nina Dobrev, Ellen Barkin and Pierce Brosnan. It racked up 19.6 million views since debuting on the streamer to take the #1 spot, the most-watched movie in the United States and over forty other countries (but not the UK or Canada).
“Extraction 2” remained in second place with 8.9 million views to bring its total to 111.4 million views in four weeks of release. That’s just behind Jennifer Lopez‘s action flick “The Mother,” with 130 million views to date. As expected, the animated feature “Nimona,” was able to...

Girls’ Generation’s Yoon-a and 2 Pm’s Jun-Ho are reason enough to watch King The Land for most fans, but the two are so perfect for the roles, it’s as if the show was written with them in mind. The chemistry is there, and so is the comic timing, making for a fun weekend watch. The episodes are a little bit on the longer side, with the second episode being almost 70 minutes long, but they’ll definitely not leave you bored. Yoon-a’s smile can light up our hearts, and Jun-Ho is fantastic as a brooding “Chaebol” with a dark past. Let’s get straight into episode 2 of King The Land.

Netflix gained a new competitor last month (sort of) when HBO Max and Discovery+ combined forces to create the confusingly-named Max. With its list of new releases for June 2023, however, Netflix doesn’t have too much to worry about.
This month is filled with some major Netflix original titles, not the least of which is The Witcher season 3 volume 1 on June 29. Though star Henry Cavill is set to leave the Polish folklore/video game adaptation in season 4, he remains very much entrenched as the titular Witcher in this next go-around. Other big TV hits include Manifest season 4 part 2 (June 2), Big Mouth spinoff Human Resources season 2 (June 9), and animated King Kong series Skull Island (June 22). That’s not even to mention the return of Black Mirror season 6. That still has yet to receive a release date but we have no doubt it will be properly epic once it arrives.
