When Netflix’s “Squid Game” became a global phenomenon in 2021, it catapulted its cast into the international spotlight. For Anupam Tripathi, the India-born, Korea-based actor who portrayed Ali Abdul, it marked a turning point in his career that has since spanned continents and industries.

A riveting tale of love, friendship, and revenge is coming to Netflix in the form of the new K-Drama, Hierarchy. The teen drama is set in a prestigious school where only high-class students get admission until an exchange student arrives with a scholarship.

What is Hierarchy About?

The series tells the story of Jooshin High School, an esteemed institution dominated by two students: Jeong Jae-i, called the queen, and her boyfriend, Kim Ri-an, labelled the king. Their rule is undisputed until Kang Ha, a scholarship student with a grudge, gets transferred to the school.

The No. 1 series for the second half of 2023, as measured by Netflix’s view metric (total viewing hours divided by running time), was One Piece, a U.S.-Japanese co-production based on the enduringly popular manga and anime series. It amassed 71.6 million views following its Aug. 31 premiere. Streaming subscription growth in the Southeast Asia region slowed dramatically in 2023, but revenue from those subscriptions grew at a robust rate, a new study has found.

My Demon is turning out to be quite funny and has some surprisingly real moments in its absurd plot. 2023 has brought a rekindling for K-drama lovers. Some of the shows we’ve got this year are very similar to those that came out back in 2013, but on the other hand, we also have some amazing new stuff that doesn’t fit any molds, but still impresses. In the middle of the lockdown, somewhere, K-dramas had lost their way a little bit. A lot of old fans thought things were changing too much and too fast, so they lost interest. But at the same time, many new fans came on board thanks to the Ott Hallyu wave and superhits like Squid Game. Call it gatekeeping or call it bias, Og fans have a special place for dramas that came out between 2013 and 2016, and recently, that spark has returned. King The Land is a classic example, and now it seems Destined With You is joining the ranks. Fantastical like Goblin and ridiculous like My Girlfriend Is A Gumiho. “Extraction 2” has climbed its way to the 10th spot on the Netflix’s most popular original films list.

The Chris Hemsworth-led action flick has logged 129.3 million views in the 66 days since its launch, coming just behind its first installment “Extraction,” which holds the No. 9 spot on the most popular list with 135.7 million views earned in its first 91 days on the streamer. As of this week, “Red Notice” and “Don’t Look Up” led the most popular films list in the top two spots.

In terms of this week’s most-watched TV, limited docuseries “Depp v. Heard” debuted atop the English TV list with 16.2 million views since its August 16 launch. Limited series “Painkiller,” which tackles the opioid crisis and the Sackler family’s role in the tragedy, came next in the No.

Japanese animation series have long been key audience drivers in Japan and other parts of Asia. But their popularity – last year animated films filled four of the top five places at the Japanese theatrical box office – and their reach have been significantly expanded in the era of multi-territory streaming.

“Baki Hanma: Season 2” made its debut in the Netflix weekly chart in second place, with 6 million views worldwide and some 33 million hours watched. What Happens In Episode 2?

The episode begins where we left off, with Sa-Rang playing with the remote on the toilet screen like a videogame. When Gu-Won shows up, she drops the remote, and he turns away to give her some privacy.

The Gabrielle Union-starring rom-com The Perfect Find and new seasons of deceptive baking sensation Is It Cake? and The Witcher, marking the beginning of the end of Henry Cavill’s starring run, are some of the much-anticipated titles still set to come to Netflix this month.

In The Perfect Find, Union plays a fashion editor who, after a public breakup and career implosion, starts working for her former rival Darcy Hill (Gina Torres) and catches the eye of a younger videographer (Keith Powers), who happens to be the boss’ son. As a romance blossoms, Union’s character begins to question what she really wants from the next phase of her life. The film, directed by Numa Perrier, is based on Tia Williams’ award-winning novel of the same name and also stars Janet Hubert, D.B. Woodside, Aisha Hinds, La La Anthony and others.

One of the most anticipated K-dramas of 2023, King The Land is finally airing, and the first episode definitely didn’t disappoint. The 2nd generation idol combo of Lee Jun-Ho and Lim Yoon-a is lethal, to say the least! As if the enemies-to-lovers trope wasn’t already the most common one in such shows, we have another one added to the mix! In the first episode, we meet Cheon Sa-Rang, whose big dream is to be part of the hotel industry. On the other hand, there’s Gu-Won, who is in the battle of heirs between his sister and him to win over the King Hotel. As you can anticipate, Sa-Rang hopes to get a job at this precious hotel, and the rest follows. Let’s dive right into King The Land episode 1!

What Happens In Episode 1?

It’s 2016, Cheon Sa-Rang is a diligent young woman who lived with her two best friends.

Netflix‘s latest offering, ‘King The Land‘, is a romantic comedy that aims to make us believe in love, even if just a little bit, through a mix of laughter and emotions. The story follows a very serious young man who, amidst a dispute for control of the family business, meets a girl with an extraordinary smile.

Will the serious executive be able to resist the woman’s irresistible charm? We don’t think so, but we’ll have to watch this romantic comedy to find out.

Heartfelt Obsession

Netflix this week announced six new Korean romance titles slated for the rest of 2023. They are: “See You in my 19th Life,” “King the Land,” “Behind Your Touch,” “Destined With You,” “A Time Called You,” and “Doona!”

The titles were unveiled at an in-person event called “K-romance obsession” in Seoul. Guests were mostly K-drama influencers from around the Asia Pacific region and the event was decked out with reds, pinks and vast numbers of heart decorations. Guests were offered snack food that had been featured in earlier hit K-drama shows including “Crash Landing on You,” “Extraordinary Attorney Woo,” “Business Proposal” and “Alchemy of Souls.”

According to Netflix, between 2018 to 2022, global viewership of its K-Romance titles tripled, with more than 90% views coming from outside South Korea in 2022 alone. Netflix gained a new competitor last month (sort of) when HBO Max and Discovery+ combined forces to create the confusingly-named Max. With its list of new releases for June 2023, however, Netflix doesn’t have too much to worry about.

This month is filled with some major Netflix original titles, not the least of which is The Witcher season 3 volume 1 on June 29. Though star Henry Cavill is set to leave the Polish folklore/video game adaptation in season 4, he remains very much entrenched as the titular Witcher in this next go-around. Other big TV hits include Manifest season 4 part 2 (June 2), Big Mouth spinoff Human Resources season 2 (June 9), and animated King Kong series Skull Island (June 22). That’s not even to mention the return of Black Mirror season 6. That still has yet to receive a release date but we have no doubt it will be properly epic once it arrives.
