Beth gives her last name to the magazine editor as "Plimsoll," which is very appropriate for someone who has a nautical background. The "plimsoll line" is the mark or line on a ship which indicates the maximum depth the ship can be immersed safely (often seen as the demarcation between the red bottom of a ship and the contrasting color of the upper part of the ship).
