O’Dessa opens with an audacious reimagining of myth in a world where the remnants of rural life collide with the neon glare of a futuristic urban sprawl.
Director Geremy Jasper crafts a narrative steeped in legend and futuristic flair, presenting a tale of a young farm girl burdened by an ancient prophecy who dares to challenge an oppressive system armed only with her trusty, weathered guitar and a determined spirit (one might chuckle at the film’s blend of earnest idealism with a wry nod to its own theatrical excesses).
The stark contrast between pastoral simplicity and a metropolis alive with garish cyberpunk visuals creates a setting that is as richly detailed as it is steeped in symbolism. Here, the decay of a forgotten past meets the relentless flash of modernity, inviting viewers to reflect on recurring societal cycles and historical echoes.

Sadie Sink made an appearance in Austin, Texas on Saturday to debut her new film O’Dessa at SXSW, where she also looked back at wrapping up the final season of Stranger Things.
The hit Netflix series finished filming its fifth season in December and is set to be released this year. Sink told The Hollywood Reporter, “I haven’t seen anything from it yet, I’m very curious though. It’s going to be super emotional so I’m ready to cry with everyone.”
The actress also admitted to having done plenty of crying on the final day of the show’s filming, remembering, “I had cried so much that my eyes were so puffy — they had never been like that before and there are some pretty embarrassing photos of me just with these giant puffy eyes.”

There are a handful of title cards to explain the fantastical world in which “O’Dessa” takes place, but perhaps it would be more instructive if there were a few more to lead audiences back to a time before the acquisition of Fox by Disney, when Geremy Jasper’s ambitious rock opera first started to be developed at Searchlight with great enthusiasm in the wake of the director’s Sundance hit “Patti Cakes.” Now shredded into ribbons, the story of a girl (Sadie Sink) and her guitar feels like the end product of various executive regimes that couldn’t agree on a single vision, ultimately settling on the simplest of stories inside an ornate setting that’s been rendered largely incomprehensible by studio notes.
“O’Dessa” envisions the end of civilization, but when it debuts on Hulu a week after its premiere at SXSW, it’ll seem like the end of a certain era for its studio,...

In the world of movie musicals, the rock opera is a singular phenomenon. By nature exaggerated and overblown, it made sense in the 1970s, when a very particular sense of humour made room for glam and early hair metal to do their thing, but can it still work in the 21st Century? Writer/director Geremy Jasper, who charmed audiences with music-themed indie hit Patti Cake$ back in 2017, is determined to give it his all – but that’s part of the problem.
Screened as part of SXSW 2025, O’Dessa is a Disney production, and one can tell. It’s handsomely produced, colourful and slick, but almost entirely devoid of depth or real emotion – a quality that’s ironic in light of the fact that that’s how its big bad guy, entertainment tycoon Plutonovich (Murray Bartlett) is portrayed. From the outset it feels as if a collection of fantasy and dystopian science.

Sadie Sink is stepping into the spotlight in O’Dessa, a post-apocalyptic rock opera that’s set to debut on Hulu. The first trailer introduces Sink’s character, a farm girl who embarks on a journey through a strange and dangerous city, where music holds an almost supernatural power.
The film, directed and written by Geremy Jasper (Patti Cake$), follows O’Dessa as she sets out to reclaim a cherished family heirloom. Along the way, she encounters a mysterious love interest and finds herself caught in a world ruled by an eccentric and sadistic entertainment mogul, played by Murray Bartlett. Also starring in the movie are Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Regina Hall.
Sink admitted that taking on the role was a daunting experience. Speaking to Variety last year, she recalled, “There was this moment where I was just like, ‘Oh my God. I can’t believe I said yes to this. Fuck.

Sadie Sink has had quite the journey. She is one of the rare performers who had the fate of having done Broadway even before entering her teens. It is another story that she called it quits at 11. That did not deter her from becoming a sensation with Stranger Things, striking gold as Max Mayfield.

As she gets set to release her second movie, A Sacrifice, in theaters this weekend, Jordan Scott (IFC’s Cracks) recalls the best advice she received from her father, Sir Ridley Scott, from one director to another.
“I’m very lucky that I can pick up the phone and ask his advice on anything and I’m going to get the best answer. And his advice on everything is just: Preparation. Preparation. Preparation,’” Scott tells The Hollywood Reporter.
Inspired by Nicholas Hogg’s 2015 novel Tokyo, A Sacrifice from Scott Free Productions follows American social psychologist Ben Monroe (Eric Bana) as he investigates a local cult connected to a disturbing event in the German capital. While he immerses himself into his work, his rebellious teenage daughter, Mazzy (Sadie Sinke), gets involved with a mysterious local boy who introduces her to the city’s underground party scene. As these two worlds head towards an intersection,...
