The project was announced on the 18th of January 2023, less than two weeks after the original's very successful, both critically and commercially, release in cinemas.
In addition to the project's announcement, it was also simultaneously confirmed that Allison Williams and Violet McGraw would be reprising their roles as Gemma and Cady, respectively.
