Action icon and all-around legendary guy Chuck Norris is celebrating his 80th birthday today… Or maybe his birthday is celebrating him.
Born Carlos Ray Norris in Ryan, Oklahoma, the famous martial artist and film producer had a surprisingly melancholy childhood. His father was a drunk who would often put his family in financial crisis, causing Norris to exhibit introverted tendencies throughout his younger years – obviously a stark contrast from his action-packed career as a no-nonsense ass-kicker later in life. He picked up the nickname “Chuck” while serving in the United States Air Force where he began studying martial arts and soon started teaching karate. He eventually became the first ever westerner to earn the rank of 8th-degree black belt in taekwondo.
In 1972, Norris earned himself a long-term spot in Hollywood when he starred as Bruce Lee’s nemesis in The Way of the Dragon, which went on to be Hong...

Top Dog is a feisty crime drama written by Green Street writer Dougie Brimson, the film charts the fall of reformed bad boy Billy Evans (Leo Gregory), who leads a strong cast including Dannielle Brent and Lorraine Stanley.
The film is the second feature from director Martin Kemp, who takes care to ensure that his film has heart, as well as a good old-fashioned fight. We sat with the director himself, alongside Leo Gregory, to discuss their work on the production.
Top Dog is in cinemas from Friday 23rd May and out to own on Blu-ray and DVD on Monday 26th May through Universal Pictures. Read our review here.

★☆☆☆☆Adapted from the novel by Green Street (2005) scribe Dougie Brimson, Top Dog (2014) is the latest offering from Jonathan Sothcott's Richwater Films, who seem intent on burying British independent cinema under a mountain of cockney gangster flicks and inferior horrors. Unfortunately for anyone with even a modicum of taste, there's undoubtedly a certain demographic that will lap up football hooligan dramas, and wouldn't give "a monkey's" if some jumped-up reviewer gives Martin Kemp's Top Dog a critical hiding. Good for them. Ignorance is famously bliss, whilst the rest of us that unfortunately chose the rocky path of knowledge have to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous filmmaking.

Crime dramas, crime thrillers, gangster films. They often get a bad rap – and it’s not hard to see why when there’s a constant stream of poorly made, low budget films being spurned out with the same boring plot where someone shoots someone because he ‘mugged off’ wotshisname / stole the drugs / snitched on so-and-so. So it’s something of a relief when something comes along that’s been made with a little more effort, which is where Martin Kemp’s Top Dog comes into play.
Top Dog was brought to life by Green Street writer Dougie Brimson and lead actor Leo Gregory, who plays bad-boy-turned-good Billy Evans. Evans makes the fatal faux pas of trying to protect his family from a local gang who are charging them protection money – so far, so ordinary. But director Kemp is evidently keen on attempting to present something a little different. There is...

A tweet that changed everything
There is only one person to thank for my novel Top Dog hitting the screen and the truth is, I have no idea who they are or where they reside. Nor I suspect, does anyone else.
Call it fate, luck or coincidence but when that anonymous soul hit that retweet button and sent Leo Gregory’s name onto my twitter feed, they sent both of our lives off on a journey. A journey which would last a little under 18 months later and would end with the two of us accepting awards at the British Independent Film Festival in London’s Leicester Square.
Now I could go into a long winded account of exactly how that happened but I won’t because if you wrote it in a novel, it would be laughed at as being too far fetched.
