The story goes thus: it was 1985, and Hong Kong superstar Jackie Chan, having enjoyed nearly two decades of cinematic success in his native country, wanted to extend his reach into the United States. Chan had already tried to infiltrate America in 1980 with Robert Clouse's film "The Big Brawl," but while it was highly respected by martial arts fans, "Brawl" wasn't the massive hit Chan wanted. Chan had already directed four movies by 1985 but still felt that an American director could translate his fightin' sensibilities for a North American audience more accurately. So, he hired genre filmmaker James Glickenhaus to helm the 1985 actioner "The Protector."
Chan and Glickenhaus butted heads throughout production, as Glickenhaus refused to film fight sequences in a way Chan approved of. At the end of production, Chan merely re-edited the film himself and directed new scenes in the hope of salvaging the project.

Interview with Ding Sheng: Having chosen to make this movie, I also have to accept the consequences.
Ding Sheng is a Chinese film director and screenwriter, born in Qingdao, Shandong. His works include “Little Big Soldier”, “Police Story 2013” and “Railroad Tigers” all of which starred Jackie Chan. In 2013, he directed “Saving Mr Wu” while his latest project sees him giving a go at John Woo’s classic, “A Better Tomorrow”.
On the occasion of the film “A Better Tomorrow 2018” screening at Far East Film Festival, we speak with him about the pressure of remaking a masterpiece, Jackie Chan and Andy Lau, filming at home and the karma that links him to Hong Kong cinema.
Let’s start with the inevitable question. How the idea to remake this classic came about?
Actually “A Better Tomorrow 2018” was strongly wanted by the investor, I personally wouldn’t have thought the time was right to remake a classic that is still so close to us in time. The...

Marketing for Kong: Skull Island has gone to new heights. Now on Google Maps you can locate the island that Kong calls home. This is not the first time that Google Maps has been used to market a movie, last year Google Maps was used to promote Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them. That marketing strategy allowed you to locate four areas around New York City and look down on them in street view as if you were in the set of the movie. Unfortunately there are no pictures of Skull Island or Kong standing tall looking around. Out of a five star review currently Skull Island only has a three rating.
If you want to make a difference, be sure to go in and give Skull Island a rating of your own. Tell them about the hospitality of the Skull Crawlers, or how great of...

The new IMAX poster for Kong: Skull Island pays homage to a classic film that’s also set in the violent era of the Vietnam War.
Unveiled by EW, the Kong: Skull Island poster features a similar style and layout as Bob Peak’s artwork for Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now. Kong: Skull Island takes place in the ’70s with Vietnam War-era military equipment and personnel, perhaps leading to the fitting shout-out to Coppola’s classic film on the new IMAX poster.

Unveiled by EW, the new image gives fans their first really clear look at the latest version of King Kong, and to go along with the reveal, director Jordan Vogt-Roberts shared some key details about the movie and its titular creature.
Vogt-Roberts told EW that the new take on King Kong has more in common with 1933's King Kong than the other film versions:
"We sort of went back to the 1933 version in the sense that he’s a bipedal creature that walks in an upright position, as opposed to the anthropomorphic, anatomically correct silverback gorilla that walks on all fours."

Police Story might just be the greatest action franchise of all time. But which movies are the best in the series?
After his disappointing experience in America filming The Protector, Jackie Chan returned to Hong Kong determined to make his own cop film his own way. The result - Police Story - kickstarted perhaps the greatest action franchise of all time; a series of films that still deliver thrills of a near-religious magnitude for genre fans.
Aside from the two reboots, the Police Stories revolve around Jackie's maverick Hong Kong cop Ka-Kui Chan (or Kevin Chan, in the English dubs) with frequent appearances from his lovably inept superior 'Uncle Bill' (Bill Tung) and his long-suffering girlfriend May (Maggie Cheung). The story continuity is a little ropey but instead each instalment offers a new, and usually more improbable, case for Ka-Kui to crack.
There's a blend of comedy,...

I've never really mentioned Amazon Instant Video releases, but with today being the digital release of Mad Max: Fury Road I figured no better time than now considering it is still one of the best films (if not the best) of the year so far. So, before we get to the physical discs, here's a selection of new titles available on Amazon Instant starting today. Amazon Instant Mad Max: Fury Road Good Kill Felt Cop Car I Am Chris Farley Aloha Walt Disney Animation Studios Shorts Collection Final Girl Return to Sender Of those, I obviously recommend Mad Max and it seems Mike liked Cop Car well enough that a digital rental might be the best way to go. Otherwise, I watched half of Good Kill and couldn't watch any more and I've heard Felt is a pretty solid little horror film. No let's tackle the small selection of physical...

What’s the first image that pops in your mind when you hear the name “Jackie Chan”?
For most of us, Chan is an iconic martial artist who always finds a way to make his films action-packed, replete with massive explosions and death-defying stunts, without totally sacrificing humor. However, in his film “Police Story: Lockdown,” Jackie loses the goofy grins and replaces it with intense gazes and an overall pensive look.
The Criminal Avenger, the Hardened Detective, and the Damsel in Distress
The Story Behind the “Lockdown”
Well, you can’t blame Jackie Chan, who portrays Detective Zhong Wen in “Police Story 2013,” for the serious face.
Detective Zhong has been searching for his estranged daughter, Miao, only to find her in a relationship with the seedy nightclub owner, Wu Jiang. Their difference in opinion resulted to an argument, but before he can try and reach out to his daughter, he was knocked unconscious.

"Hey, supercop!" Well Go has put out a trailer for the upcoming Us release of Police Story: Lockdown, the latest in the Police Story franchise starring Jackie Chan. The film actually played in China back in 2013, and is just now getting a release here in the Us, but this isn't the same goofy Jackie Chan we've seen so much of recently. He's as serious as ever in an action-drama where a reunion with his daughter goes bad, and then there's a big battle inside of a club. The cast includes Liu Ye, Jing Tian, Guli Nazha and Zhou Xiao Ou. I can't say this looks like an instant must see, but I'm down to check it out. Give it a look below. Here's the official Us trailer for Sheng Ding's Police Story: Lockdown, direct from Well Go USA: The newest chapter in the Police Story crime franchise stars Jackie Chan as Wen,...

Universal Pictures International Entertainment has bought the international blockbuster Chinese Zodiac, also known as CZ12, and will distribute the film in North America, Australia, and the United Kingdom (among other locations) in the upcoming year. This is no doubt great news to Jackie Chan fans in these countries as he both directed and starred in this action film that has already earned $180 million in the Asian box-office. Some will note that this film has already had a limited release through AMC Theatres this last October, however this film will now reach an even greater number of eyes through Universal.
The plot of this films circles around the loss of twelve bronze figures of the Chinese zodiac, whose retrieval Jackie Chan’s character Jc has been tasked with completing. While fulfilling this mission Jc finds himself not only caught up in international intrigue dating as far back as the Second Opium War,...

Jackie Chan is an absolute badass in this trailer for his upcoming film, Police Story 2013. This movie looks exciting as hell, and it's awesome to see Chan in a hardcore role like this!
Just so you know, this film has no connection to Chan's earlier Police Story films. This movie was directed by Ding Sheng, who previously helmed Chan's Little Big Soldier.
In the new film, Chan plays a mainland Chinese Interpol officer investigating a kidnapping case.

I haven't seen Jackie Chan in anything of note (besides lending his voice talent to a kids movie which turned out to be better than anticipated) but the action star is making a comeback in a very big way, one that's getting lots of attention outside China.
It appears that Police Story 2013 has very little to do with the previous action comedies that share both title and star. Chan and his mighty fighting ability are put to good use here as Chan plays a police officer investigating a kidnapping.
Director Sheng Ding and Chan worked together a few years ago on the action comedy Little Big Soldier but the pair, along with Ding regular Ye Liu, are taking things far more seriously here; Police Story 2013 looks like a gritty action thriller completely devoid of laughs. [Continued ...]...

This month saw the release of CZ12, a new action thriller from Jackie Chan, but that film has been released overseas for much longer. But later this year, international audiences will see Police Story 2013, a new film Chan's well known series of action films. However, unlike the previous installments, this sequel has no connection to Chan's earlier films as he plays a mainland Chinese Interpol officer investigating a kidnapping case. Now we have a trailer offering a peek at the wild stunts, fight sequences and more, but this film looks much more gritty and dark than anything we've seen Chan do before. It's a shame he didn't do this before. There's no English subtitles, but the action is the dominant force in the trailer anyway. Watch! Here's the international trailer for Sheng Ding's Police Story 2013, from Twitch: Sheng Ding (Little Big Soldier) directs Police Story 2013, the...

Well, hello Jackie. It's nice to see you. And your fists. And your feet. And your face getting punched. And your car flying through the air. Yes. Yes, indeed. If you're looking for a bit of old school action done right then you can do an awful lot worse than the just released trailer for Jackie Chan star vehicle Police Story 2013. Directed by Little Big Soldier helmer Shen Ding, expectations have been high for this one given that Little Big Soldier is one of the absolute best pieces of work in the later period Chan catalog. And this trailer certainly delivers up to those expectations with a ton of excellent stunt work that does not sacrifice performance in the process. This latest Police Story has no...

Jackie Chan’s “Police Story 2013″ is on its way to theaters in China this December. Judging from the latest poster for the flick, it looks as though the action star is taking the series in a darker direction. The “Police Story” movie, while enjoyable, are definitely not to be taken seriously. However, director Sheng Ding seems to be moving away from the goofier adventures for the next installment of the long-running franchise. Depending on what you want from Jackie Chan, this is either a good or a bad thing. I didn’t care much for Chan’s 2009 thriller “Shinjuku Incident” or his 2012 actioner “Chinese Zodiac,” albeit for different reasons. Here’s hoping “Police Story 2013″ finds a balance between dark drama and intense action. I’d love to see a well-balanced Jackie Chan movie right about now. Scratch that — I need it. “Police Story 2013″ stars Jackie Chan, Liu Ye,...
