This month’s installment of Deep Cuts Rising features a variety of horror movies, with each one reflecting a special event or day in May.

Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.

This month’s offerings include a tense battle between mothers, a tale of evil in the suburbs, a fast-food slasher, a twisty wartime horror story, and an indie slow burn with a Hitchcockian vibe.

The movie stars Oscar winner Patty Duke as young widow Francesca, who’s visiting her late husband’s mother (Rosemary Murphy) for the first time at a remote house in snowy Minnesota. Soon things take a turn when Francesca becomes not only stranded at her in-law’s house, but also drugged and taken prisoner.

Documentaries and pictures made by female filmmakers dominated the prize ranks of South Korea’s Jeonju International Film Festival. Some, including “Splinters” which won the festival’s Grand Prize, were qualified on both counts.

“Splinters” aka “Esquirlas,” is an Argentinian-made documentary about the military-industrial complex, which premiered last year at the Mar Del Plata festival. It emerged as an expansion of a home video shot by director Natalia Garayalde, who recorded the explosion of an arms factory in 1995, when she was 12 years old.

Another documentary, Marta Popivoda’s “Landscapes of Resistance,” took the best picture award in the festival’s international competition.

A third film, “Friends and Strangers,” took the special jury prize. Directed by James Vaughan, the black comedy is pitched as a depiction of current day Australia from the viewpoint of Millennials.

I have always wondered why, with all the horror festivals in La, there isn't a dedicated science fiction film festival in the city. Well, I now have to wonder no longer, because on August 9th I attended a cool science fiction film fest, The Galactic Film Festival, a presentation of The Academy of Film Festivals, the same institution that brought us last year's horror oriented Rip Film Festival.

Produced by Fatal Pictures in association with Red Sneakers Media, "Heir" is the final entry in their "Box Cutter Trilogy", a trio of linked shorts each representing “different theories on the origin and operation of sociopaths,” and is looking to raise $17,000.

I gave Jared Lee Masters’ film Slink a rave review over at Film Radar earlier this year. That film is a tight little thriller that manages to be funny, sexy, and creepy all at the same time. After watching Teacher’s Day, I can safely say that I am a fan of Jared Lee Master’s work. But, I do like Slink a little better.

"Teacher’s Day" is Jared Lee Masters’ take on the slasher. After a teacher is fired for connecting with one of his female students on Facebook, he murders the dean, and then goes to the house of the female student, where there is a sleepover party taking place. The rest of the film is a kind of a take on Slumber Party Massacre, where the young women are killed off one by one by the angry teacher.
