Britain did enlist the help of slaves to their numbers in exchange for their freedom, so long as they fight for the crown. So long as they remained within British-held territory, they were considered free by British authorities. The Colonial Army also recruited slaves to their army, but they offered them their freedom if they join for a certain time period, at least a year of service.
