With Dustin Nguyen's Once Upon A Time In Vietnam (Lua Phat) gearing up for Vietnamese release next month a second theatrical trailer has arrived online. And while this one does include a little more on the action side of things than what we've seen before the primary focus is clearly on the story elements of the fantasy oriented martial arts picture, so it's a good thing indeed that English subtitles are included for the international audience.This is the first time anyone in Vietnam has attempted this sort of picture and so far the results are looking good. Dustin Nguyen makes his much anticipated directorial debut with martial arts fantasy Once Upon A Time In Vietnam (Lua Phat), a fight flick spectacle that owes equal debts to American westerns, steampunk aesthetics and local influences. We've been tracking this one from all the way back in script stage when it was known as Monk On Fire and with a summer release coming the full trailer has just been released.Verdict? Things are looking rather good indeed. If there was one area of concern - and one area not really addressed by the previous teaser - it was how the visual effects would come out as this is still a relatively new area for Vietnam but the visuals are looking strong from start to finish. What a coincidence. I was watching the big-screen remake of “21 Jump Street” yesterday and towards the end of the movie, there’s a quick shot of Dustin Nguyen (one of the original stars of the TV show that the movie is based on) on a TV set before the TV is blown to bits by bad guys. It’s sort of a throwaway homage to him, I guess, since a lot of the show’s other stars actually showed up in the movie in bit parts. So what’s Nguyen been up to? Plenty, as it turns out, including writing, directing, and starring in a movie called “Monk on Fire” that we previously reported on way back in 2007. The film, called “Lua Phat” in Vietnamese, is now finished has been retitled “Once Upon A Time In Vietnam” for English consumption, and you can check out the film’s first teaser trailer below.
