Arcade Fire’s fifth album, Everything Now, came out July 28, and ahead of a traditional interview, we also asked the band to tackle some of our favorite questions from Avq&As past. We called it Afq&A, which is very clever. Here are their answers.
Question: If you were Santa and you could gift everyone in the world with just one piece of culture, with the implicit understanding that they’d definitely read/watch/listen to it, what would you give them?Tim Kingsbury
The Very Best Of Nina Simone: Sugar In My Bowl 1967-1972. No matter what’s going on, I can listen to her sing and play and to her amazing band, and it takes me to a better place. Her music is my favorite, definitely a desert-island record for me.
Her version of “To Love Somebody” is perfect. The band is amazing—particularly the rhythm section...

No disco act saw more success than the three Gibb brothers from Australia. Formed by Barry, Robin and Maurice in 1958, the group sold over 220 million albums worldwide and had countless number one hits, ranging from the sublime ’60s pop of “Words” and “To Love Somebody,” to funky ’70s mainstays like “Stayin’ Alive” and “Tragedy.”
But tragedy has also marked their personal lives.
The Gibb’s youngest brother, Andy—a singer in his own right—occasionally performed with the group, and saw solo success with his 1976 hit, “I Just Want to Be Your Everything.” But the promising star battled a terrible addiction to cocaine,...

The Voice narrowed things down on Monday’s live show, trimming two competitors from each coach’s team in the singing competition’s first ever live-voting show.
Fans voted live on Twitter and the Voice app for their favorites, picking two top scorers to move forward from the teams led by each of The Voice’s superstar coaches: Blake Shelton, Alicia Keys, Miley Cyrus and Adam Levine. Each coach was also allowed to choose one competitor to save from the remaining three.

I will not use the words “rigged” and “election” in the same sentence this week — Gack! Just Did! — but nevertheless, I suspect history won’t look too kindly on The Voice‘s “historic” decision to use real-time voting (and same-night eliminations) for Season 11 Top 20 performance night.

Do I think Mark Burnett and the good folks at NBC decided to shake up the format in order to favor heavily promoted front-runners over dangerous dark horses? There’s no real evidence to support that theory.

Turning on American Idol to find Haley Reinhart, David Cook and Jordin Sparks was, for this Idoloonie, like walking down to the corner pharmacy and spotting a unicorn in the shampoo aisle. Adding Chris Daughtry, Kellie Pickler and even Constantine Maroulis to the All-Star mix, and it was like I’d found that unicorn tossing a bottle of Pantene Pro-v back and forth with a pegasus.

Carson Daly will never cop to it in one of his All Caps introductions, but it’s got to sting everybody at The Voice — at least just a little — that despite its monster ratings, the show has never produced an artist who’s gone on to achieve household-name status.
