The Testimony Of Johnny St. James casts Jeffrey Johnson in the title role and he's
had quite the life. At one time a seminary student he meets the love of his life
and then his pregnant wife is killed by a drunk driver. So he becomes both a cop
and a drunk at the same time. With those kind of issues no way on this planet
would a police force allow him on it.
Nevertheless partner Eric Roberts helps Johnson by taking him to Alcoholic Anonymous meetings, many of which are held in churches. Then it's like that line from Casablanca that Humphrey Bogart utters about of all the gin joints in the world his lost love Ingrid Bergman comes into his with a husband in tow.
Only it's not a husband. Up there conducting the AA meeting is Vincent Irizarry the man who killed his wife and unborn child. Johnson loses it and takes the meeting hostage.
As this is a Christian movie the parameters dictate only one way to go. Personally I think when SWAT arrived they would have stormed the church and blown Johnson away. But that's the cynic in me.
I can't see how Johnson would have gotten past the psychological tests to get on the police force. I've seen some bad apples get there, but can't see how Johnson could have made it.
I'd say his future in law enforcement was toast no matter what. So is the movie.
