Chuck Lorre is best known for his sitcoms like The Big Bang Theory, Two and a Half Men, Mom, and The Kominsky Method. Known as the king of sitcoms, Lorre seemed to have cracked the code when it came to multi-cam comedies, with shows like Tbbt becoming staples of pop culture.
However, he seemed to have misfired with Netflix’s Disjointed. The Kathy Bates starrer followed a marijuana advocate and the employees in her cannabis store. While the reviews were middling at best, the show was known for its edgy humor, with one episode talking about the Illuminati conspiracy. It was canceled after one season.

In January 2007, the pioneering DVD-by-mail rental service Netflix launched a streaming media platform, introducing the idea of video on demand via an Internet connection. A the time of launch, Netflix only had 1,000 films available for streaming. A month later, Netflix would mail out its billionth DVD to a customer, which marked the beginning of the end. In the following years, thanks to partnerships made with studios and broadcasters like Disney, Warner Bros., Viacom, DreamWorks, The CW, and AMC, Netflix's streaming service was proving more popular than the mail subscription service that built their company.
But on February 1, 2013, a massive shift occurred when Netflix released "House of Cards," its first original, United States-produced series exclusive to the streamer. It wasn't just a riveting political drama, but one that also boasted huge Hollywood names like a yet-to-be-disgraced Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright. Everyone's got a show whose cancellation still shakes them to their core. For some, it's Netflix's brilliant sci-fi "Sense8." For others, it was the wrestling dramedy "Glow"... also produced by Netflix. Honestly, if you've been around long enough, there's a high chance you've gotten your heart broken by Netflix at some point. The streaming service has become public enemy #1 for many a TV fan; they're more likely to cancel your favorite series than they are to greenlight another season of it. That habit even extends to shows that, by all accounts, found critical and commercial success, like "Shadow and Bone." The series achieved a rare feat by scoring a loyal following, critical buzz, and solid streaming numbers — but that didn't stop it from getting the axe after its second season.
As an adaptation of Leigh Bardugo's YA fantasy series of the same name, "Shadow and Bone" was poised...

Lana and Lilly Wachowski used to work as a filmmaking duo, bringing us the likes of Bound, The Matrix and its first two sequels, Speed Racer, Cloud Atlas, and Jupiter Ascending, while also scripting the likes of V for Vendetta and Assassins, plus creating the TV series Sense8. In recent years, they have been focusing on separate projects, with Lana making The Matrix Resurrections solo while Lilly has been working on the Showtime series Work in Progress and a movie called Trash Mountain. Now, during an interview with Autostraddle, Lilly has revealed that she has several other projects in the works, including an adaptation of the horror novel Manhunt.

"The Boys" showrunner Eric Kripke announced earlier this year that his five-season plan for the show is indeed still happening. The next season will the be the last one, even if the show's spinoff(s) may continue indefinitely. It's a relief to a lot of fans who worried the show was dragging things out too much, but it's also a slight disappointment to actor Laz Alonso, who plays Mother's Milk. In a recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Alonso revealed his idea for the series finale's format:
"I've been unsuccessfully pitching that we end the show with a feature film to Eric. Like, make the last episode of season 5 a cliffhanger and announce the film that we've been filming since the beginning of the series, pretty much... But [Kripke] always somehow gets out of that one."
When asked if he'd want the movie to be released in theaters, Alonso indicated yes,...

Starz just dropped a killer new trailer and key art for its upcoming dark comedy “Sweetpea,” premiering Thursday, October 10 (8pm Et/Pt). The six-part series stars Ella Purnell as Rhiannon Lewis, a quiet wallflower who develops a vengeful and intoxicatingly liberating taste for murder. At its core, the series is about a woman finally finding her voice, told through a uniquely dark and comedic lens.
Here’s the official description from Starz: Rhiannon Lewis doesn’t make much of an impression – people walk past her in the street without a second glance. She’s continually overlooked for a promotion at work, the guy she likes won’t commit, and her dad is really, really sick. Then everything in her life turns upside down. Rhiannon is pushed over the edge and loses control. Suddenly the wallflower is gone, and in its place is a young woman capable of anything… Rhiannon’s...

All episodes of Twilight of the Gods are now streaming on Netflix, and the review embargo for Zack Snyder's adult animated Norse mythology series lifted around the same time the show premiered.
This isn't always a great sign, but the first wave of reviews have been mostly very positive.
Snyder's work has rarely gone over well with critics, but his last Netflix collaboration - the Rebel Moon movies - really came in for a drubbing. So far, Twilight of the Gods has fared a lot better.
Though there are some negative verdicts, the majority of write-ups praise the animation style, world-building, voice-acting and bloody action - although it sounds like Snyder may have overindulged in the graphic violence and sex a little too much for some tastes.
Have a read through the reviews below, and we'll be sure to update once we have a Rotten Tomatoes score.

“Baby Reindeer” star Nava Mau may be becoming a trans role model following the success of the Netflix drama and her Emmy nomination for her work on the show, but the actor isn’t ready to call herself an “activist.”
“I really shy away from that word because I think that people who are activists are often times involved with organizing and I deeply respect that work,” Mau told me Friday at the Television Academy’s Performer Nominee Celebration at The Wallis in Beverly Hills. “I tend to call myself an advocate.”
Mau’s nod for outstanding supporting actress in a limited or anthology series or movie makes her the first transgender woman nominated in that category.
She becomes emotional when talking about hearing from trans youth who thank her for her visibility. “It makes me cry a little bit,” Mau said.
She recalls being honored at the Toronto International...

Zack Snyder's adult animated Norse mythology series, Twilight of the Gods, is set to premiere on Netflix on September 19, and the streamer has now released an action-packed final trailer.
This full-length promo spotlights plenty of bloody battles, as a mortal warrior named Sigrid enlists the aid of Loki (probably not a great idea) to wage war against Thor after the vengeful God of Thunder murders her entire family.
"In a mythical world of great battles, great deeds, and great despair, Leif (Stuart Martin), a mortal king, is saved on the battlefield by Sigrid (Sylvia Hoeks), an iron-willed warrior with whom he falls in love," reads the updated synopsis. "On their wedding night, Sigrid and Leif survive a wrath of terror from Thor (Pilou Asbæk), which sets them — and a crew of crusaders — on a merciless mission for vengeance, against all odds. Since there are so many new shows added to Netflix each month, it's tough to know which shows are the right ones for you. Maybe you start watching a show that's advertised to you or has been popular on the top 10, and then randomly in the middle, there's an instance of violence or nudity you weren't expecting to see. That can often happen with TV-ma-rated shows.
Obviously, before watching a new show on Netflix, viewers like to be as informed as possible on what they are about to spend their hard-earned free time watching. On Aug. 29, Netflix released Kaos, a dark fantasy series that centers on the exploits of Greek gods and other mythological situations. The subject matter alone makes way for some potential content and trigger warnings.

Sci-fi romances that involve some kind of interplanetary expedition don’t really have happy endings, do they? Star Wars, as a franchise, is one of the biggest space operas in existence and it is plagued with doomed romances. Solaris is responsible for the “sad men in space” template. For the most part, the two Dune movies by Denis Villeneuve focused on the love story forming between Paul Atreides and Chani, and by the end of the second film, it seemed like Chani will try to kill Paul. Jupiter Ascending (which is a movie I like!), Passengers, and the Avatar movies are kind of the outliers here, I guess. But the exception proves the rule, i.e. if your romantic couple is in a sci-fi movie (even if it’s a short film), then it won’t last. So, let’s talk about Alpha 27.

The Umbrella Academy has just premiered its final season, but there are plenty of options for shows if you like it!
The Umbrella Academy has been one of Netflix’s biggest original series. Based on the cult comic book, six superpowered kids are brought together by a millionaire to save the world. The show is known for its outlandish characters and storytelling, mixing alternate timelines, time travel and more alongside situations no other show can take on. The fourth season will wrap up the story and end the show.
Thankfully, there are some good shows just like Umbrella Academy out there. Some are based on comic books, a mix of superheroes, fantasy, sci-fi, and more with an offbeat style and pretty crazy. Streaming offers many options, while these fifteen shows are right up the alley for Umbrella Academy fans to check out if you want an unusual type of heroic show!

The series follows the aftermath of Skynet, an AI being, gaining consciousness and waging its war against humanity in “Terminator 2: Judgment Day.” It becomes self-aware on Aug. 29, 1997, after which a war rages on for decades.
“Terminator Zero” is set in 2022 and follows a soldier, Eiko (Rosario Dawson), who is sent back in time to change the fate of humanity. She journeys back to 1997 to protect a scientist named Malcolm Lee (André Holland), who is working on another AI system, Kokono (Sonoya Mizuno) to compete with Skynet. Although it exists in the Terminator universe, it centers entirely around new characters.
The trailer sees Lee attempting to save the Earth from Skynet, while being hunted down by an assassin from the future.

Post-2005 Doctor Who main TV-show companions. That’s the first qualifier to add to the following list. For now at least, we’re celebrating only the Nu-Who main companions who had their own proper stint travelling in the Tardis, or any of the many wonderful actors who preceded them in the classic era.
Now that the rationale has been set out, join us to round up some of the best after-Who roles from the likes of Billie Piper, Freema Agyeman, Catherine Tate, Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill, Jenna Coleman, Pearl Mackie, Mandip Gill and Tosin Cole. It’s too early to add Millie Gibson to this gang but look out for her in rebooted period drama The Forsyte Saga when it arrives.

[Editor’s Note: this list was originally published in March 2018. It has since been updated with new entries.]
It’s easy to think of the kind of stories that get told in the comic book world as just one genre or tone, but as seen below, graphic novels, comic strips, and other sequential art have offered up an incredible range of storytelling. And these stories have been inspiring great TV shows for years, even before superhero stories dominated the box office.
There were plenty of options that nearly made the list, like the WB’s “Smallville,” which squandered its early potential after running just a few seasons too long. Because one of the most exciting things about these stories is that there’s a rich variety to choose from.
With editorial contributions from Liz Shannon Miller, Ben Travers, and Hanh Nguyen.

Forget summer blockbusters. On July 1, ABC’s six-season hit series Lost became available for streaming on Netflix and the show’s availability on not one, but two major streaming services (the other being Hulu) has skyrocketed the story of the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 back into the spotlight. From original fans of the series, which ran from 2004 to 2010, to new Dharma Initiative recruits, all eyes are on the lush island where characters like Jack, Kate, and Sawyer found themselves fighting to survive and keep their own dark secrets hidden.
Lost’s renaissance is sure to leave a new generation of viewers asking questions about the mythology of the island, the story of its strange inhabitants, and what the heck happened in the final episode. And, don’t even get us started on explaining the series’ epilogue, which new viewers won’t find on Netflix or Hulu. There’s also bound...

“Weiss & Morales” is a new light crime drama procedural co-produced between Spain and Germany. It has received considerable industry attention over the past several weeks as broadcasters Zdf and Rtve have increased their PR for the show, which could represent an evolution in how pan-European series are developed and produced at an affordable cost without sacrificing quality.
Zdf and Rtve co-produced the series alongside Zdf Studios and Nadcon in Germany and Portocabo in Spain. Rtve has exclusive rights to the series in Spain, while Zdf handles international sales outside Spanish-speaking territories.
Last week, at Conecta Fiction & Entertainment in Toledo, Spain, José Pastor (Rtve), Wolfgang Feindt (Zdf), Nina Hernández (Portocabo), Peter Nadermann (Nadcon), and Susanne Frank (Zdf Studios) hosted a lively discussion about the show and the implications it could have for European co-production.

When LGBTQ community-gathering spaces were largely put on pause by the pandemic, those once-in-person safe havens became our streaming platforms and technical devices at home. Hyper-specific pop subcultures emerged — here’s looking at you, queer readers of the generally awful “Friends” — and reputations for streamers’ philosophies toward and commitment to LGBTQ content were widely discussed online. (Shout out to Showtime: the premium cable network still servicing lesbians everywhere.)
Even as the world has opened back up, in Hollywood, it feels like queer storytelling and community are more galvanized than ever. Nowhere is that more tidily displayed than on the carousels of “LGBTQ” offerings found across entertainment platforms. Netflix, a heavyweight in any streaming conversation (regardless of its rocky 2022), has played a significant role in green-lighting major queer-inclusive projects across television and film. Zack Snyder‘s partnership with Netflix continues as the Rebel Moon director follows up his ode to Star Wars and Seven Samurai with a new anime from The Stone Quarry and Xilam Animation. Xilam Animation is responsible for such projects as Oggy and the Cockroaches, Zig & Sharko, and Chip ‘n’ Dale: Park Life for Disney+, all of which they’ve created and produced. Snyder’s new show, Twilight of the Gods, is an anime that he co-created that’s based on Norse mythology. Netflix has now released a first look at the new dark and violent limited series with previously unreleased images.
The synopsis from Netflix Tudum reads,
“In a mythical world of great battles, great deeds, and great despair, Leif (Stuart Martin), a mortal king, is saved on the battlefield by Sigrid (Sylvia Hoeks), an iron-willed warrior with whom he falls in love. On their wedding night, Sigrid and...

Netflix unveiled first looks at a whole host of its upcoming animated shows and features during an event on Thursday, and Rebel Moon director Zack Snyder was on hand to introduce the first footage from his Norse Mythology series, Twilight of the Gods.
“I love mythology,” said the filmmaker. "On a scale like this, I feel like animation was the greatest way to tell the story.”
First announced way back in 2019, it's taken quite a while to find its way to our screens, but we recently learned that the show will finally premiere on Netflix this Fall.
The project has been described as "Anime-influenced," but judging by these clips, we'd say the animation style has more in common with the Academy Award-nominated Cartoon Saloon studio.
“When most people think about animation, they think about Saturday morning cartoons, or G-rated movies,” said the presentation’s host, Christopher Sean. “But animation is...

Written by Michael Nilon and directed by Benjamin Brewer, this terrifying post-apocalyptic horror thriller premiered at South by Southwest this past March. It stars Nicolas Cage, Jaeden Martell, Maxwell Jenkins and Sadie Soverall.
In a near future where earth has been decimated by an undisclosed catastrophe, Paul (Cage) barely escapes alive from the city alongside his infant twin boys. Years later, Paul and his teenage sons Joseph (Martell) and Thomas (Jenkins) are living in a remote farmhouse miles away from their nearest neighbours at Rose Farm. During the day, the boys and their father work the land and gather provisions, but at night the threesome are under siege from killer creatures that roam the land.
The trio’s quotidian life of humdrum chores and trying to survive each night at a time, is thrown into chaos when Thomas, the more rebellious of the two brothers, fails to return before nightfall one evening.

Director and producer Tom Tykwer has become managing director of Berlin-based production company X Filme Creative Pool, best known for “Babylon Berlin,” alongside Uwe Schott. Tykwer succeeds Stefan Arndt, one of Germany’s leading producers.
The reorganization of the company’s management is intended to “sharpen the focus on the development and implementation of creative, bold and unusual material for film and television,” according to a statement.
Arndt is leaving at his own request but will remain associated with the company as a producer.
X Filme Creative Pool was founded 30 years ago by Tykwer together with the writers and directors Wolfgang Becker and Dani Levy as well as Arndt. The four founders, who remain shareholders together with Beta Film and Bogey, based themselves on United Artists with the aim of producing sophisticated films with an audience appeal – or, as Variety put it, “intelligent films that audiences want to see.”

German director Tom Tykwer has been named Managing Director of Babylon Berlin producer X Filme Creative Pool as part of a restructure that sees company co-founder Stefan Arndt step down.
The pair co-founded the German production powerhouse 30 years ago, but Tykwer will now succeed Arndt in the MD role, and joins Uwe Schott on the management team in Berlin. Arndt is exiting “at his own request” but will remain “associated” with the producer and stays on its board.
X Filme noted the restructure was “intended to sharpen the focus on the development and implementation of creative, bold and unusual material for film and television.”
“I would like to withdraw from the day-to-day business so that I can concentrate more on producing again,” said Arndt. “Some exciting projects are already in the pipeline and I’m looking forward to realising them as a freelance producer with the X Filme team.”

Pride started early in 2024 with the SXSW premiere of “Sense8” actor Brian J. Smith’s debut documentary “A House Is Not a Disco,” a kaleidoscopic look at the LGBT past and present of Fire Island. Part fly-on-the-wall immersion — Smith invokes Frederick Wiseman when talking about it — part introductory guide for newbies who maybe knew a bit on how Fire Island Pines is a gay mecca but don’t really know what all the fuss is about, it’s an exuberant, colorful, many-faceted view of a place where many gay men first felt fully free to be themselves completely uninhibited. Or as Smith puts it, it was where he “learned how to be a gay man.”

1999 was famously a great year for film, and it’s hard to pick what masterpiece from that year stands out as the greatest. Is it Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Magnolia”? Stanley Kubrick’s “Eyes Wide Shut”? Spike Jonze’s “Being John Malkovich”? One could reasonably come up with hundreds of answers (even the teen films that year were pretty great), but it’s hard to deny the most influential film of the year came from Lana and Lilly Wachowski.
On March 24, 1999, the Wachowskis invited America into “The Matrix:” a speculative science fiction world where the reality as we know it is all a lie. International independent production company and financier Gold Rush Pictures has signed a deal with Germany’s X Filme Creative Pool to participate in financing and co-produce the next three projects written and directed and/or produced by Tom Tykwer, including features and TV series.
The partnership follows Gold Rush Pictures recent investment in Tykwer’s German contemporary drama “The Light,” the filmmaker’s return to the big screen after seven years and four seasons as writer and director of the hit series “Babylon Berlin.” It is the writer-director’s first feature film since his 2016 adaptation of “A Hologram for the King,” starring Tom Hanks.
Currently in production, “The Light” (“Das Licht”) centres on a troubled family who take on a mysterious woman as a housekeeper. When she successfully shakes up the lives of the family, she then confronts them with the dark fate of her own. The film stars Lars Eidinger,...

Founded by Filipino-American entertainment executives Jp Mallo and Justyn Reyes in 2019, J Creative Entertainment started as a multi-media agency producing marketing campaigns for shows and films such as Pretty Little Liars, Tokyo Vice, The Gilded Age and the upcoming Dune prequel.
It will now push into original content based around Aapi and Filipino stories.
“It’s always been my advocacy and mission to champion representation for all underrepresented voices and stories,” said Mallo, a former Vice President of Global Originals Marketing at HBO & Max Originals. “We’ve seen a magical shift in Hollywood, and our stories are real, rich and intersectional. We’re only just getting started.”

Lilly Wachowski is bound to direct “Trash Mountain,” a queer comedy-drama starring rising comedian and actor Caleb Hearon. The film follows a young gay man living in Chicago who returns to his hometown in Missouri following the death of his hoarder father.
Along with starring in the feature, Hearon also co-wrote the script with Ruby Caster. Colin Trevorrow, who directed Hearon in “Jurassic World Dominion,” is producing the feature with his banner Metronome Film Co., alongside Eddie Vaisman and Julia Lebedev for Sight Unseen.
“Trash Mountain” will mark the first solo directorial feature effort for Wachowski, who is best known for writing and helming the original “Matrix” trilogy with her sister, Lana Wachowski. The duo’s other projects include the lesbian crime thriller “Bound” and the colorful manga adaptation “Speed Racer.”

The Matrix and Sense8 mastermind Lilly Wachowski is here to take out the trash for her next film, Trash Mountain. The project finds Wachowski teaming up with comedian Caleb Hearon for what Collider says is an emotional comedy about closure through sorting the belongings of a hoarder. Casting for the film is underway, with Colin Trevorrow producing alongside Eddie Vaisman and Julia Lebedev of Sight Unseen.
Caleb Hearon, a rising comedian, wrote the script with Ruby Caster. The comedian also stars in the project, which sounds like part tearjerker and part knee-slapper. According to Collider‘s exclusive report, Trash Mountain “follows a gay Chicago man in his 20s who must return to rural Missouri to deal with the death of his father — an obsessive hoarder who has left a house full of items, some valuable and some not so, to pick through.”

It's difficult to encapsulate the importance of Lana and Lilly Wachowski as directors. While the queer crime thriller "Bound" marked the sisters' directorial debut, it was their 1999 hit "The Matrix" that completely changed the landscape of science-fiction cinema forever. In 2021, the franchise's fourth installment, "The Maxtrix Resurrections" was released, but the film was a solo directorial venture from Lana Wachowski. Lilly has not directed a film since 2015's "Jupiter Ascending," but spent time directing season 1 of "Sense 8" and serving as the showrunner for "Work in Progress." The former was yet another sci-fi epic, but the latter is a sweet, semi-autobiographical queer dramedy starring Abby McEnany. It seems that working on this series must have inspired Lilly to continue similar creative ventures because according to a report from Collider, her next feature film is "Trash Mountain" starring Caleb Hearon.
