It’s common knowledge that Bollywood’s history with horror is really shaky. Despite lacking in quality filmmaking and storytelling, films like Mahal, Gumnaam, and the works done by the Ramsay brothers have gained cult status due to a severe case of nostalgia. Thanks to the Bhatts, the 2000s and 2010s were plagued with half-hearted remakes of international horror films. And it was probably the mercurial success of Bhool Bhulaiyaa, the remake of Manichitrathazhu, that caused the Hindi film industry to steer away from serious horror films. Yes, we get the occasional Tumbbad, but the landscape is largely filled with Go Goa Gone, Stree, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, and Bhediya. And, to be honest, they are quite profitable. Aditya Sarpotdar is riding this tide with Zombivli, Munjya, and now Kakuda. So, let’s talk about it.

Streaming platforms like Netflix are often accused of being the dumping ground for movies that were meant for theatrical release but then the distributors and the producers backed out because they thought it wouldn’t be a profitable venture. How can you tell if a made-for-theater movie is being dumped for streaming? Well, made-for-theater movies start with the animated production logo video and a short or long list of people that the makers want to thank; straight-to-streaming films don’t have that. Anyway, I believe that every movie should be released in theaters because you never know whether or not it’ll find an audience and rake in an unexpected amount of money. I also believe that films should get a theatrical release, even if it’s a limited one, because every filmmaker wants their film to be projected on the biggest possible screen instead of being used as background noise.

It feels great to see how even after so many years, it’s still being talked about and at the receiving end of all this love.
The actor calls the film his baby as he got his writer credit for penning the dialogues of the film.
The film, which released on May 10, 2013, has become a cult classic owing to its blend of horror and comedy and rib-tickling dialogues.
Talking about his experience of working in the film, the actor said, “‘Go Goa Gone’ is a special film and really close to my heart. The film was like my baby as it was my first film where I got the opportunity to be a writer and work on an idea that came to life between the three of us, i.e. Raj – Dk & myself. It feels great to see how even after so many years, it’s still being talked about and at the receiving end of all this love.

Stand-up star and occasional actor Vir Das has a clear-cut strategy when it comes to balancing his two flourishing careers.
"I have to balance both careers. Stand up (comedy) takes time, so when I act that should be an interesting role," said Vir, revealing the reason which kept him away from films in 2020.
As an actor, Vir is known for his work in Bollywood films such as "Delhi Belly", "Go Goa Gone", "Mastizaade" and "Badmaash Company". Last year, he also starred in the black comedy web series "Hasmuk".
"I think "Hasmukh" was an interesting thing to pursue because a film takes a long time. For me, it's about finding a good character and telling a good story," he said.

Moving away from regular horror, Bollywood is lately warming up to the idea of serving scares with a spot of humour. The horror comedy as a genre is suddenly in vogue among mainstream Hindi filmmakers.
The genre existed in the Hindi film industry for ages -- the old classic "Bhoot Bangla" and recent releases such as "Bhul Bhulaiyaa", "Bhootnath", "Go Goa Gone" and "Stree" come to mind. These films, however, were one-off cases. What is happening now is that Bollywood filmmakers have suddenly taken interest in the genre of horror comedy in a way that it seems like the genre is here to stay. Importantly, the new crop of films serve the funny scares with a new-age spin and a message.
We look at a few horror comedy films that are all set to hit the screens.
Bhoot Police
The film stars Saif Ali Khan, Jacqueline Fernandez, Yami Gautam and Arjun Kapoor.

The idea of a dull white-collar office-goer moonlighting as an undercover agent is not new. Arnold Schwarzenegger did it in James Cameron's "True Lies" 25 years ago. Now it is Manoj Bajpai's turn in a 10-part series that is as irresistible as streetside gol gappas. I couldn't stop binging until it was all done.
The directorial duo of Raj and Dk has a reputation of doing the unexpected, whether is India's first zombie film ("Go Goa Gone") or the gamechanging comic chudail film "Stree", which the duo wrote to super-success. In "The Family Man" they are on firmer ground. The material is strong and constantly interesting. Issues such as mob-lynching and anti-beef attacks or covert operations overreacting to terror threats, are raised organically in the plot as Srikant (Bajpai) grapples with home and terror (and sometimes terror at home) issues to the best of his abilities.
To be honest, Srikant's best is plainly inept.

Actor Kunal Kemmu has been a part of filmmaker Rohit Shetty's Golmaal franchise for a while now. He says the multi-starrer film series works only because of the entire team, including his co-stars Ajay Devgn, Arshad Warsi and Tusshar Kapoor. Kunal has been part of Golmaal 3, Golmaal Again, Go Goa Gone and has more multi-starrer movies, including the recently announced Malang and the fifth part of Golmaal, lined up.
What does he like about being a part of multi-starrer movies?
"The most important reason is that it's not on your shoulders," he replied with a laugh.? But that's not the only reason.
"It's the story that always attracts me. A film like Golmaal only works because of all of us. It is as much Ajay's film as it is mine or Arshad's or Tusshar's. These are the stories of the gang,"
Kunal told Ians in a telephonic interview.
