Why do we watch Hallmark holiday movies, year in and year out? In 2024 alone, the channel pumped out 32 original films for the holiday season, with new premieres starting in October and continuing every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for the rest of the year. Many of them have interchangeable titles, like "Believe in Christmas," "The Christmas Quest," and "Confessions of a Christmas Letter." It's totally natural to turn on one of these movies and think, "Haven't I seen this before?"

After all, so many of these movies are the same, down to the identical green and red sweaters everyone seems to wear on every poster. They all have the same few types of characters with the same few types of jobs, getting into the same sort of holiday shenanigans while falling into the same types of romances.

With less than a week to go until Christmas, Jimmy Kimmel had one more “Naughty or Nice?” ruling to make this week. It ended with him getting unintentionally cursed out and gifting a ream of paper along with a car mat.

In the segment, which the host pushed to his YouTube channel Monday night, Kimmel and his beloved sidekick Guillermo dress up as elves and run through children’s Christmas letters with the kids who wrote them. This time around, they read the letters of young Vince and Stella. Stella asked for “a bunny and a Nintendo,” while Vince requested a tarantula and mice.

“What are you, a vampire?” Kimmel questioned. “A lot of people, when they have mice, they call a guy to come get them out of their house. Same with tarantulas.”

As always, Kimmel then read through some of the kids’ more naughty moments of the year...

There's nothing like decorating the tree with "Home Alone" or "The Santa Clause" playing in the background, or gathering around the TV for both versions of "Miracle on 34th Street." These films are well-worn and comfortable, already popular for decades. But while friends and families may appreciate these ubiquitous favorites, they likely watch a few hidden gems every season, too -- those films that, while they may not dominate the airwaves, are considered classics by the people who love them most.

Long before Hallmark became the biggest purveyor of holiday rom-coms, theaters showcased a great range of Yuletide fare. This was particularly true in the 1940s, which the British Film Institute called "the golden age of the Christmas movie." There's much more to that decade than "It's a Wonderful Life," but as time marches on, more and more holiday films fail to get the recognition they should.

Comedy Central announced its annual 31-day holiday extravaganza, featuring two new movies: “A Clüsterfünke Christmas,” debuting Dec. 4, and “Hot Mess Holiday,” premiering Dec. 11.

Both of these movies will air at 7 p.m. The network will announce additional titles for its”31 Days of Going Home for the Holidays” programming slate at a later date.

“A Clüsterfünke Christmas” stars Vella Lovell, Cheyenne Jackson, Ryan McPartlin, Nils Hognestad, Rachel Dratch and Ana Gasteyer and follows the story of real estate executive Holly who heads to a small town to buy the quaint Clüsterfünke Inn and transform it into a resort. While meeting the owners, Holly finds herself distracted by their handsome nephew Frank. It is a parody of more traditional holiday rom-coms.

Anna Dokoza directs “A Clüsterfünke Christmas,” which was written by Dratch and Gasteyer, who also executive produce alongside Meghan Hooper, Trevor Rose, Josh Van Houdt, Danielle von Zerneck, Jamie Goehring and Shawn Williamson.

Calls to boycott Hallmark Channel have drawn the attention of the network’s past and present stars, including One Tree Hill vet Hilarie Burton.

Burton, who has previously headlined three Hallmark movies — Naughty or Nice (2012), Surprised by Love (2015) and Summer Villa (2016) — responded to the controversy surrounding the network’s decision to pull commercials that featured a same-sex wedding. In a Twitter thread on Sunday, the actress claimed that she’d been fired from a Hallmark movie earlier this year after she insisted on more diverse casting.

Hallmark Channel this week delivered a sentiment very different from the ones found in its parent company’s greeting cards when its executives questioned an ad showing two women getting married — and barred the commercial from running on its schedule.

Zola, a company that offers online wedding registries and wedding planning services, had been running commercials in recent days that feature a lesbian couple contemplating whether their wedding might have gone better if they had used Zola’s products. A spokeswoman for Zola said the company would remove all of its advertising from Hallmark “for the forseeable future” after being informed by the network that it would decline to run commercials from Zola featuring a same-sex couple.

When we think about maniacal Santa Clauses in horror, we often go straight to the axe-wielding Billy from Silent Night, Deadly Night, or the homicidal madman who stalked Joan Collins in the Tales From the Crypt movie segment “…And All Through the House” (or its TV episode remake from 1989).
