Well, in the movie Nebraska is still a territory (statehood was in March 1867) and odds are the pioneering was from the Homestead Act (very little happened before that, you were literally risking your life for multiple reasons, 160 free acres was good enough reason to risk it for many) that Lincoln signed in 1862. So sometime between 1862-1867 is my guess. Sorry I can't be more precise than that since there is no Marty McFly pulling a dated newspaper from a garbage can.
