One of the most popular songs each December is Wham!’s “Last Christmas.” Wham!’s George Michael had complex feelings about the song. Everybody else just seems to like it.
George Michael felt Wham!’s ‘Last Christmas’ was too good
Simon Napier-Bell was Wham!’s manager. During a 2023 interview with The Daily Telegraph, Napier-Bell discussed Michael’s issue with “Last Christmas.” “He was always slightly upset by the fact [that] he naggingly knew it was the best thing he ever wrote,” he recalled.
Napier-Bell remembered Michael’s greatest wish, “George, above all, really wanted to be remembered as a great songwriter,” Napier-Bell said. “And I think at the bottom of his mind… it was rather annoying that the song he got so perfect was a Christmas song.”
Michael was onto something. Christmas music is ubiquitous, but it doesn’t inspire the same level of critical respect as pop, rock, soul, R&b,...

Please, please, please – tell us if Sabrina Carpenter just shaded Mariah Carey?!
Because that’s what it looks like to us!
Now, just because Sabrina Carpenter’s music included some of this summer’s hottest songs doesn’t mean that she’s going into hibernation when the season’s change.
This winter, she’ll be hosting a variety music special on Netflix. A holiday special, no less.
But in promoting A Nonsense Christmas With Sabrina Carpenter, she’s seemingly threw a little shade at one of the biggest stars of all time. You probably know her best as the Queen of Christmas…

Some classic rock stars take a while to do the obvious. Cher released her first Christmas album in 2023 during an inappropriate time of the year. The “If I Can Turn Back Time” singer discussed what it was like to make a record at this stage in her life.
Cher gave us country songs before she gave us Christmas songs
Cher has released albums of every flavor. She’s done folk, disco, hair metal, Edm, and country music. She covered tunes by Abba, Bob Dylan, and Miley Cyrus. However, never put out a Yuletide record until 2023, when her album Christmas showed up on store shelves.
During a 2023 interview with The New York Times, the Goddess of Pop was asked why she never released a holiday record before. “I just didn’t want to,” she said. “I didn’t know how I would fit into it. I didn’t know how Christmas...

Phoebe Bridgers has released her annual holiday cover — this time with the help of her boygenius bandmates.
This year’s choice is “The Parting Glass” — a Scottish and Irish traditional that Sinéad O’Connor recorded in 2002 — which also features the Irish folk duo Ye Vagabonds. Just like all of Bridgers’ holiday songs, the proceeds will be donated, this time to the Aisling Project. Chosen by the Sinéad O’Connor Estate, the Aisling Project is an after school program for children and young people in Dublin, Ireland.

Although it’s been sung many times, many ways, Christina Aguilera just absolutely shredded “The Christmas Song” on “Late Night with Seth Meyers.”
Watch the video above.
Goodness, the vocals. Creative Arts Emmy for whomever lit that entranceway.
Christina Aguilera’s holiday album is titled “My Kind of Christmas.” You can see — or hear, really — why it, like so many of her other albums, has gone platinum.
Aguilera is no stranger to NBC. The “Genie in a Bottle” singer was one of the original coaches on NBC’s “The Voice” from. In the spring of 2018, Aguilera explained why that run ended — and why it will likely not be reprised again.
The pop star called “The Voice” a “churning hamster wheel” of a show, and said it’s “not about music.”
“It became something that I didn’t feel was what I had signed up for in season one,” she told Billboard.

Phoebe Bridgers has shared her rendition of Simon & Garfunkel’s “7 O’Clock News/Silent Night,” featuring Fiona Apple and The National frontman Matt Berninger.
Like the original 1966 folk track, Bridgers combines the classic Christmas song “Silent Night” with a reading from a typical nightly newscast — only this time, the headlines are pulled straight from 2019, with mentions of the abortion debate, sexting and the Trump White House. Apple harmonizes with Bridgers on the “Silent Night” portions, while Berninger plays the role of “the newscaster.”

What is it about dashed expectations that breed singer-songwriters? As the Sixties dream cratered, a golden era peaked in Laurel Canyon — think Joni, Jackson, Sweet Baby James — with a tendency towards wistful solipsism. Now, a new one is blooming as the American experiment contemplates its doom. Father John Misty’s cosmic snark, Mitski’s aching character studies, Kurt Vile’s transcendent vagueness — all of them offer strangely comforting proof that hopelessness springs eternal.

From Elvis’ “Blue Christmas” to Diamond Rings’ “Christmas in a Chinese Restaurant” to Merle Haggard’s “If We Make it Through December,” the holiday season has long served as a perfectly-fitting template for songs of the sad-sack variety. “I don’t mean to hate December,” Haggard sang on the latter, “it’s meant to be the happy time of year.” Christmastime gives songwriters already prone to deep despair an occasion to indulge their most morose tendencies, an excuse to provide a much-needed counter to the season’s otherwise incessantly cheery...

Be still, our '90s-loving hearts -- Joey, Matthew and Andrew Lawrence are returning to television!
It’s been 20 years since the short-lived sitcom Brotherly Love came to an end. But, in the current era of reboot and revivals, there may be some good news, courtesy of eldest brother Joey.
“We’re actually working on a TV show together for the first time in 15 years,” Joey tells Et. “We wanted to find a way not to redo Brotherly Love, but to bring us back together as grown men.”
While the show won’t revive the exact same characters, the three will be playing brothers once again. According to Joey, filming for the pilot begins in just a few days and will be formatted as a scripted, single-camera, half-hour comedy.
“It's edgy, which is different,” Joey says. “The dynamic and relationships that we have are not the late '90s, sitcom-like relationships.”

Tis the season to be...well informed. We all love Christmas, but how much do any of us actually know about why Christmas is the way it is? Here are 31 facts about Christmas trees, Santa Claus, and Rudolph that you (probably) didn’t know. Smarten up! 1. Christmas supposedly marks the birth of Jesus Christ on December 25. But there is no mention of December 25 in the Bible and most historians actually believe he was born in the spring. 2. December 25 was probably chosen because it coincided with the ancient pagan festival Saturnalia, which celebrated the agricultural god Saturn with partying, gambling, and gift-giving. 3. Many of the popular Christmas traditions today found their roots in Saturnalia: Branches from evergreen trees were used during winter solstice as a reminder of the green plants that would grow in spring when the sun gods grew strong. 4. These evergreen branches became the foundation of our Christmas tree. Germans are thought...

Leona Lewis is bringing holiday cheer -- to your ears!
The British songstress is back with a new version of her original Christmas song, “One More Sleep,” as part of Amazon Music’s holiday playlist, “All Is Bright,” and Et has the exclusive premiere of the reworked song. Lewis originally recorded “One More Sleep” with a full band for her 2013 album, Christmas, With Love. The new version is stripped down and, according to Lewis, takes inspiration from the girl groups of yesteryear.
“Doing this version with Amazon was really interesting, because it went back to the original style of how we had it in the beginning,” Lewis says. “We stripped everything away and made it more like a ‘60s ballad-style. It has a bit of a Supremes feel to it, but it still has those Motown elements, because that is what it was originally inspired by.”

Getting the note that you'll be interviewing Mariah Carey results in two reactions: complete joy and utter terror. This is generally how I feel about interviews. I'm never nervous per se, unless I'm meeting someone of epic proportions. And Mariah Carey definitely falls under that category. She's the indisputable festive queen of Christmas, with the most beloved Christmas song of the last 30 years. It's infiltrated most of the population's holiday traditions, whether it's watching Christmas movies on Hallmark or partaking in an annual viewing of Love Actually. People who don't even celebrate Christmas can't help but sing the song. Given the typical Christmas song repertoire we had prior to "All I Want For Christmas is You" - which included hymnals, songs about reindeer with red noses, and a duet that includes a man practically begging a woman to stay over against her will - I'd venture to say it's the...

His Christmas song remains a classic, but heartbreakingly the joyous time of year was always one filled with pain for George Michael.
The late singer, who died on Christmas 2016 at age 53, recalls the period was when he lost two of the people he loved the most in what became his final project, George Michael: Freedom.
In the 90-minute documentary, which he was working on days before his death, Michael tells viewers how the passings of his first love, Anselmo Feleppa, and his mother, Lesley Angold Panayiotou, took an emotional toll on him, specifically during the five years between the deaths.

Dahhlings, Mariah Carey doesn't do birthdays. She has anniversaries. And when her beau, Bryan Tanaka, popped out of a cake dressed as a Chippendale on Sunday's episode of Mariah's World, you'd have to be living under the world's biggest rock to not know that Mimi's anniversary was much better than her New Year's Eve.
From the looks of it, she also had a pretty great Easter and Christmas, as we learned from this collage-y episode, which went from her lip-syncing her own Christmas song, "Oh Santa!," on her private jet with her crew to Easter and candy eggs in just minutes.
But that "anniversary" party -- we need to talk about the champagne Mimi pours down the chiseled chest of "Magic Tanaka."

This holiday season, a cappella group Pentatonix offered up A Pentatonix Christmas, which serves as their second album of Yuletide songs. This time, in support of their effort to mission to spread holiday cheer, they took to YouTube to share a unique offering with their fans. To create the video, Sony (which is partnered with Pentatonix through its RCA Records label) turned to the Lego Group in search of an animated makeover for its a cappella all stars.
