This is a really bad movie, but it's so bad it's fun and good for doing "stuff".
There are the prerequisite spoiled children,of all ages. The young boy is the one that could have been seen less of and it would have been easier on us. There's nothing like a precocious child to drag down a movie.
This is a two parter and this review is based on the first part. I'll watch part two just to see how this plays out. But I think I know.
Sadly, as other reviewers have said, the acting is flat from everyone - even Rupert Evertts.
So, if you need to do the dishes or do some work on the computer, this is the very mini-series to do it to. You won't miss you and can easily catch upon what's happening in a New York second.
If you are looking for a deep intellectual, well-acted show - skip it.

Series should have been cut to one episode If the cliches and plot twists that weren't needed were cut it would be a cleaner plot with a tight 90 minutes of run time. Of course the overdone music is too much also. So much of the acting is either over the top or completely flat. Clean up all the plot/ script/setting goofs of which there are many would have helped also. Of course the question remains on how so many people are clueless over so many thing and make so many bad decisions.
It is kinda sad. The basic story had promise but was destroyed by a bad director and producers that tried to turn it into something it isn't.
With fast forward to turn it into one hour of total run time it was sort of fun.

Just turned the TV on, watched literally a few minutes of this and am absolutely stunned that Rupert Everett is in something so, so dreadful! The acting is absolutely appalling... I felt physically uncomfortable at the awkward physicality between the characters and their hammy yet wooden performances... I watched for another fifteen minutes in the hope I had caught it at a bad moment, but nope... What on earth happened?

While the storyline held promise, the director moved at such a slow pace that it was almost painful. The acting was beyond terrible...just godawful. It's obvious Rupert Everett phoned it in and John Hannah collected his paycheck for his few days & ran.
I feel bad...but the poor child who played the son was cute but not enough to pull off having no tangible talent.
The women...Wife #1 was so unemotional. Same reaction to finding out about a lying cheating husband to flirting with him before he left to painful convos with her daughters. Wife #2 must have taught the actor playing her son how to act. I'm sure she has many talents, but acting isn't one of them. As for the daughters, I can't really tell if they were trying too hard or are just that bad at acting.

Really liked this! It was easy to watch & definitely held my attention all the way through. There were twists I didn't see coming and that keep you guessing plus the characters were well-drawn and believable. At the end of part one I was really keen to see part two! Always a good sign.
John Hannah should be on TV more often! He's great in it. The other performances were very strong too but it made me realise I hadn't seen him in anything for a while. I didn't recognise the lead actress but thought she was very good & had a lot to do & she did it well. Thought the story was great with a lot of tension - kept me guessing! Funny, sad, people's lives are complicated etc. As good as a night in with a good book. Watch it!

Utterly diabolical!!! I love John Hannah and Rupert Everett (hate what he's done to his face mind you) but honest to goodness, wooden acting, parts obviously dubbed with professional audio actors.. I could go on but as I've just wasted a few hours of my life in the vain hope of it getting half watchable, I wont!

Holy hell. I think I've seen better acting at any high school play. It played like a 1970's Kool Aid ad. The little boy I think at least has an excuse as maybe it was his acting 101 lesson but s*** no excuse for the empty acting from the others. I felt like I was watching a dubbed movie-and those are always ridiculous! The actors should be ashamed of what they did here. Under better direction I guess this could have been a mediocre movie but that's a high bar for what was actually made. Did something happen in 2012 that made proper actor make movies like. I cannot unsee this pantomime.
Phyllis's Law, where you blackmailed into doing the movie. You can do better. I should have seen better! I could go on but it would just end up being mean but that's what happens when one sees this cringe inducing show. And that "ballerina" daughter-so many things wrong there. Rupert, why, why, why; what has happened to you. I'm not sure if I feel the need weep because of the horrible movie that was actually made and distributed or because I watched it. I guess sometimes one does have to watch a train wreck.
Those who thought this was a good movie, tsk tsk.

This is an excruciatingly boring 2 episode movie with very pretty scenery and locales and bad acting. Perhaps I should cut them some slack - maybe the screenplay/dialogue was a collaboration written by the 9th grade creative writing class of 2010. Rupert Everett, however, presumably could have risen above his portrayal of a cartoonish stoop shouldered Snidely Whiplash. Horrendous performance. He has forever tainted himself.
Rosamund Pilcher is an entertaining author and I hope she did not live to see this rendition of her book. I struggled through it on 4 separate occasions, just to get through it for Rosamund. In the first episode, I longed for the plane crash. Just SOMETHING interesting. And it wasn't. Going forward, I longed for the stiff and awkward ballet scenes to end quickly. They didn't. Terrible, very predictable movie.

Sorry I know you shouldn't do a review without seeing the whole show; but I turned on the TV and saw 10 minutes of this randomly.. When I saw there was a named actor, I assumed it would be at least a professional production.. but I was amazed; the acting is so wooden; utterly terrible.. I thought it must be a parody; so went to IMDb to confirm this was a subtle comedy; and it appears not.. but really surprised to see the positive ratings.. Honestly every one involved in this should really consider if they are in the right career..
Yes! I really only have one question for those that actually enjoyed this drivel. What exactly are you smoking? Please share it, must be some great stuff!... I literally was in shock at how terrible the acting was, and even worse than that the musical score sounded like something they might've had a $50 budget to put together. Somebody mentioned the tension and surprises at every turn. Really? This was the most predictable story I believe I've ever watched. Not a single surprise. I suppose the most interesting thing is why I actually watched it to the end lol! I guess sometimes something can be so bad you can find it entertaining just for the laughs alone!
If all you want is fast cars and guns then this is going to be above your head. There is lots of subtle intrigue and anticipation and the characters were like real people - not shallow props to some unconvincing graphic "cartoon".
In real life people do not always wear their emotions on there sleeve and little boys can be quite quiet except when they spill the beans!
I just had to keep watching it to find out what was going to happen next.
Yes it is a bit slow moving as it sets the scene but that makes it all the more convincing and you are left with so many questions.
I MUST see episode 2 to find out how it ends. I guess that makes it a pretty good movie!

I clicked on this to read the synopsis but accidentally purchased episode 1. I was annoyed at myself but thought.... John Hannah, Rupert Everett- intriguing sounding story.....I'll give it a go and not waste the money spent.
Unfortunately within 10mins i was wanting to back out due to the dated and 'straight to TV' quality, plus the cringeworthy acting. THAT little boy????!!! Gawd!!!!! I tried to continue. Give it a chance but after another 20mins i was concerned my toes would never uncurl again. Even though money is tight, life is too short and there are so many other things that are free to watch that are way better than this. I also was definitely not going to pay the £2.49 for the 2nd part so what was the point? I cannot really fairly review this because I didn't see it through but based on the 40mins I sacrificed to watch what I did, this is my summary.

I gave this movie quite a high rating because I rather enjoyed it. It was very, very bad in the characters, the plot lines, the direction, in pretty much everything. But the movie was one you could watch with granny or teenage offspring without feeling embarrassed. How many movies can one say that about nowadays? Now, while the characters were nearly all wooden, almost catatonic, they looked pretty enough or sinister enough, almost like a parody of TV movie-making. There were great gaps in which nothing much happened, when the stars (I use the term advisedly) seemed to have forgotten their lines or the director had perhaps popped out for a coffee (or ring his agent). Nevertheless, it was the equivalent of the endless "Schlager" (German pop songs) I used to hear (but not listen to) when I was a guest worker in 1970s West Germany. And I think, if I recall rightly, it didn't rain once throughout the whole three hours of the movie! What's not to like about such a nice, fluffy puppy of a movie that just wants its tummy tickled?

I thoroughly enjoyed this soapy family drama. Nothing like Rosamunde would have written, but still it is domestic and romantic. Two wives of the same man, both nice women, betrayed by John Hanna, the conflicted bigamist. The collision course they are set on kept the tension dialed up to medium high and when the truth is finally revealed it was suitably dramatic. Throw in an estranged father, a plane crash, bankruptcy, a boyfriend stealing sister, a war-hero love interest lurking in the background, a cheating lying brother, financial shenanigans, a daughter jealous of her mother, a heart attack, and a gold mine and I'm all in. Also ballerinas! Seriously what more could you ask for?
