The script was originally written for Javier Bardem and Javier Cámara in 2004. That year in Spain, both actors were nominated at the Goyas (the Spanish Oscars) for best actors (for which Javier Bardem won that year). Also at the time, Javier Bardem was getting a lot of interest from Hollywood and he was frequently in the US for meetings and castings, for Steven Spielberg among others. Not being able to get the two biggest Spanish actors together on a common schedule for more than 2 years, director Lewis Martin Soucy eventually dropped the project. After shooting a feature in Spain in 2011 as a cinematographer, Lewis Martin Soucy told that story and pitched the script to Roque Madrid, a local producer, who loved the project and decided to produce and shoot it with a new cast after his feature wrapped.
Camilo García, the dog's voice, is the Spanish dubbing voice actor of Anthony Hopkins, Harrison Ford, Gene Hackman and Gérard Depardieu, among others.
