John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and The Wire co-writer Chris Collins has partnered with former Pressman Film head of production Kelly McKee and entertainment attorney Ken Browning to launch production and finance company Generator Entertainment.

Generator will focus mainly on action, sci-fi, and elevated horror in the budget range of $5-20m and has partnered with Hill Country Studios, a $250m studio development outside Austin, Texas, which will back the new venture’s development and contribute to financing on upcoming productions.

Oscar-nominated actor and Emmy-winning star Sterling K. Brown is reuniting with his “This Is Us” creator Dan Fogelman for a new thriller series.

Gone is the feel-good, family-friendly tone of ensemble drama “This Is Us”: Instead, Fogelman and Brown’s latest collaboration “Paradise” is pure murder mystery with a government conspiracy twist.

Brown plays a government agent who is questioned after the death of one of his neighbors. The official synopsis reads: “‘Paradise’ is set in a serene community inhabited by some of the world’s most prominent individuals. But this tranquility explodes when a shocking murder occurs and a high-stakes investigation unfolds.”

James Marsden, Julianne Nicholson, Sarah Shahi, Nicole Brydon Bloom, Aliyah Mastin, and Percy Daggs IV co-star. Marsden has already been part of a quasi-legal series with meta documentary show “Jury Duty.” Meanwhile, Nicholson won an Emmy for her turn in detective show “Mare of Easttown.”

Publicis Media U.S. has acquired Picture Motion, a social advocacy and cause marketing company that has developed campaigns for over 400 films, TV series, news and media productions. The company has worked on the likes of “American Fiction,” “Origin,” “Creed III,” “Fire of Love,” “Free Solo” and “The Problem with Jon Stewart.” Terms of the sale, including the price, were not disclosed. Talks between the companies started roughly a year ago.

Picture Motion will sit within the specialty entertainment division, Publicis Media Content & Innovation (Pmci). There, Picture Motion will help with the development of original film and television projects, collaborating with brand clients and entertainment industry partners, while providing concept development, strategy, distribution, monetization and promotional support. Eight Picture Motion staffers will join the company as part of the deal.

Picture Motion will also work closely with Pmci’s Inclusion Investment Fund, which helps find and fund content that amplifies diverse voices.

There are nine legendary stars who only need a Grammy to achieve the Egot grand slam of show business awards: Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony (see the gallery at the bottom of this post). On Friday, Nov. 8, Oscar contender “Challengers” received a Grammy nomination for Best Score Soundtrack For Visual Media. This specific music category is awarded to the composers of an original score — in this case, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross — that is created specifically for film or television or other visual media. The Amazon MGM Studios production is also currently predicted to receive an Oscar bid for Best Score, and all of this attention could certainly boost its chances.

The other four nominees at the 2025 Grammys for Best Score Soundtrack For Visual Media are “American Fiction” by Laura Karpman, “The Color Purple” by Kris Bowers, “Dune: Part Two” by Hans Zimmer, and “Shōgun” by Nick Chuba, Atticus Ross, and Leopold Ross. Since then, its awards prospects have grown, especially following its Audience Award wins at the Mill Valley and Middleburg fests. Those regional accolades helped propel future best picture nominees such as “American Fiction” (2023) and “Belfast” (2021) and best picture winner “Green Book” (2018). “Conclave” has popular appeal, but will its religious themes be an advantage or a potential hurdle in the Oscar race?

In a press release, the Gotham Film & Media Institute called its annual awards ceremony the “start of the annual awards season.” In terms of the awards calendar, that’s certainly true: the Gotham Awards take place on December 2, before even some major critics groups like the New York Film Critics Circle make their own choices.

Nominees for the Gotham Awards, now in its 34th year, “are selected by committees of film and television critics, journalists, festival programmers, and film curators.” To choose the winners, “Separate juries of writers, directors, actors, producers, editors, and others directly involved in making films will determine the final Gotham Award recipients.”

After making history together with “Barbie,” Margot Robbie and Warner Bros. are at it again. The LuckyChap producer and star is set to lead frequent collaborator Emerald Fennell’s adaptation of “Wuthering Heights,” which is now officially a Warner Bros. Motion Pictures Group title. IndieWire can confirm that the studio won MRC’s highly-anticipated feature after what we’re told was “a fierce bidding war.”

As previously announced, MRC is the studio financing the film, with Robbie’s LuckyChap producing. Fennell wrote and will direct and produce the feature-film adaptation based on the Emily Brontë novel. Robbie leads the feature as Cathy, who becomes intoxicated with the brooding Heathcliff. Fennell’s “Saltburn” star Jacob Elordi is playing the iconic Heathcliff.

The film is now in pre-production, with UK shoot set for 2025. Writer/director Fennell already teased the project with an Instagram post featuring the title and the tagline “Be with me always.

For the first time in its history, the contest for the Audience Award at the Middleburg Film Festival has resulted in a tie. “Conclave” from Edward Berger and “September 5” from Tim Fehlbaum won top honors at the 12th edition of the Northern Virginia event.

“Conclave” centers on a cardinal (Ralph Fiennes) who is tasked with leading the secretive papal election after the sudden death of the Pope and finds himself in the middle of a battle for the direction of the Universal Church. It also stars Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, and Isabella Rossellini. Rossellini received the Agnès Varda Trailblazing Film Artist Award at this year’s festivities.

“September 5” chronicles the 1972 Munich Olympics hostage crisis from the perspective of the ABC television crew that covered the Olympics outside the Olympic Village. It stars Peter Sarsgaard, John Magaro, Ben Chaplin, and Leonie Benesch.

Edward Berger’s religious thriller “Conclave” and Tim Fehlbaum’s historical drama “September 5” both took home the audience award at the Virginia-based festival. Meanwhile, R.J. Cutler’s “Martha,” an intimate look at business mogul Martha Stewart, earned the audience award for best documentary. As the Oscar race heats up, Hollywood is bracing for an intense, wide-open awards season. After its whirlwind tour through the Venice, Toronto, and New York Film Festivals, A24’s newly acquired historical epic “The Brutalist” has emerged as a potential heavyweight in this year’s Academy Awards lineup. Starring Adrien Brody in a career-redefining role as a Hungarian-born Jewish architect who survives the Holocaust and journeys to the U.S., the film screened in front of an influential audience at CAA on Sunday night. The room was filled with industry professionals, journalists, and Oscar winners like Cord Jefferson (“American Fiction”). After the screening, the film’s director, Brady Corbet, and co-writer Mona Fastvold participated in a post-screening Q&a session, giving the audience insight into the seven-year odyssey to bring this project to life.

In the absence of a phenomenon like “Barbenheimer,” which dominated the Grammys’ visual-media categories last year, the outlook for 2025 is considerably more complicated and, some might say, more interesting.

Look for the summer’s biggest movie hits, “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool & Wolverine,” to land spots in the score and compilation soundtrack categories when the Grammy nominees are announced Nov. 8. But everything else is up in the air until then.

The compilation soundtrack category is the toughest to read, as there have been few films with breakout hits. “Twisters” is the summer’s biggest soundtrack, hitting No. 7 on the Billboard charts, so look for the tornado movie to score as an album and potentially in the song category for a pair of original country tunes: Luke Combs’ “Ain’t No Love in Oklahoma” and Lainey Wilson’s “Out of Oklahoma.”

As “Reasonable Doubt’s” Jax Stewart becomes the newest Black woman lawyer to grace our television screens, TheWrap wanted to take a trip down memory lane by listing the most iconic Black woman TV lawyers our time.

For fans, these roles may just be the characters we show up to watch in our favorite shows weekly, but for the actresses that play them and the writers that write them, their existence has impacted on-screen representation for Black women as well as the careers of Black Hollywood actresses.

That rings true for Kerry Washington’s role in “Scandal.” While we primarily recognize Olivia Pope as a crisis manager in the series, she was a former lawyer who often exhibited those tactics from her legal career. Until Washington signed on for the role — which ABC originally suggested a non-Black actress take — there hadn’t been a drama series with a leading Black woman on TV for 37 years.

We already had “The Bikeriders” in our Oscars predictions center as an adapted screenplay, but now Focus has confirmed to Variety that that’s where it will compete for Oscars. But it won’t be considered an adapted script everywhere. At the Writers Guild Awards, the film will still be slotted as an original piece of writing.

“The Bikeriders” was inspired by the photobook of the same name by Danny Lyon, and tells the story of the Vandals Motorcycle Club, a fictional version of the Outlaws Motorcycle Club. It stars Austin Butler as a member of the motorcycle gang, with Tom Hardy as its leader. It actually premiered at the Telluride Film Festival back in 2023, but wasn’t released by Focus Features until June 2024 due to the 2023 labor strike by the SAG-AFTRA industry union of performers and artists.

“Nickel Boys,” the acclaimed drama from director RaMell Ross based on a Colson Whitehead novel, is being pushed from its planned release in October to now open in a platform release late in the year in December.

Amazon MGM is rescheduling “Nickel Boys” from a release on October 25 in New York City and November 1 in Los Angeles to now open December 13 in NYC and December 20 in LA, an individual with knowledge of the shift told IndieWire. The film premiered at Telluride and was the opening night film for the New York Film Festival.

The change is significant for a serious Oscar front runner. But distributor Amazon MGM is thinking of another movie of its own that worked its way to some Oscar glory with the same exact approach: last year’s “American Fiction.”

The African American Film Critics Association (Aafca) will announce the winners of its 16th Annual Aafca Awards on December 9, Aafca President and co-founder Gil Robertson announced today in a press release. Additionally, the organization will reveal its annual Top 10 films of the year list on this date. An invitation-only celebration of the winners will follow on February 19 at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, honoring outstanding achievements in cinema with a special focus on films and performances representing the Black diaspora. Four special achievement honorees will be announced later this year.

Now, King’s sci-fi novella, The Life of Chuck, from his collection If It Bleeds is adapted into a film, that debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival.

“The Life of Chuck,” a feel-good apocalyptic story starring Tom Hiddleston and directed by Mike Flanagan, took home the Toronto International Film Festival’s people’s choice award.

This prize has historically been a reliable predictors of eventual Oscar success. In past years, winners such as “Green Book” and “Nomadland” went on to capture the best picture prize at the Academy Awards. Last year’s honor went to Cord Jefferson’s “American Fiction” while 2022’s award was bestowed to Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans,” both of which were best picture nominees and major forces during awards season.

It’s unclear if that’ll be the case this year, though “The Life of Chuck” has received largely positive reviews. The 2024 Toronto International Film Festival has finally wrapped up, closing out a two-week frenzy of world premieres and screenings of highly anticipated offerings making their way across the international festival circuit. For many, TIFF (as well as the Venice and Telluride film festivals) marks the unofficial commencement of awards season, meaning the films that receive the People’s Choice Awards typically earn an early boost for their campaigns. Last year, the top prize went to Cord Jefferson’s publishing industry satire “American Fiction,” which would later earn the writer/director an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay, as well as a nomination for Best Picture. This year’s winner was Mike Flanagan’s Stephen King adaptation “The Life of Chuck,” starring Tom Hiddleston.

“Hacks,” “Fellow Travelers,” “Black Cake” and Ava DuVernay’s “Origin” were among the big winners on Thursday as Humanitas revealed its 2024 Humanitas Prize recipients. The ceremony, held at Avalon Hollywood, revealed honors in nine juried categories, including TV, film and documentary fields.

“We actually got something friends,” “Origin” filmmaker Ava DuVernay said in accepting the award for drama feature — which had been previously snubbed through last year’s Oscars season. “We went through that whole awards gauntlet, and then this popped up in the summer, and I thought, ‘wow, they’re kind of off kilter for the award season!’ Because they don’t care about that… they’re doing something different. The 77th annual Writers Guild Awards will take place on February 15, 2025, the Guild said on Monday as it unveiled the this season’s timetable.

Submissions for all categories opened on September 9 and the online voting window runs from November 22 to December 30.

The WGA will announce its original, adapted, and documentary screenplay nominations on January 9, 2025, and the final voting window is January 13 to January 27, 2025.

The bi-coastal ceremonies for the West Coast and East Coast chapters will take place at Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles and Edison Ballroom in New York.

Erika Alexander, who starred as Maxine Shaw in Living Single, is partnering with WeScreenplay to bolster opportunities for underrepresented voices and marginalized people.

Alexander’s Color Farm Impact, the non-profit arm of the eponymous production company that she founded with Ben Arnon, is working with WeScreenplay Diverse Voices Labs on the program.

The partnership will offer a series of workshops, mentorship programs, and writing labs designed to empower writers from diverse backgrounds. Selected participants will have the opportunity to receive guidance from industry veterans, develop their scripts, and potentially see their projects brought to life on screen. Applications for the first round of workshops and labs will open August 15, with a kickoff event scheduled for later this year.

Alexander, who has also starred in The Cosby Show, Get Out and American Fiction, and Arnon, are behind documentary John Lewis: Good Trouble, as well as podcasts including Reparations: The Big Payback and Finding Tamika.

Toronto International Film Festival has brought back the renamed Best Canadian Discovery Award after a five-year hiatus.

The C$10,000 award recognises emerging filmmakers and will go to a first or second feature film in official selection.

The roster of this year’s TIFF awards includes Best Canadian Feature Film, for which all Canadian features in official selection — excluding first or second features — will be considered for a C$10,000 cash prize.

The jurors are Guadalajara International Film Festival and Cineteca Ficg general director Estrella Araiza, Toronto-based director Chelsea McMullan, and Japanese Canadian artist and filmmaker Randall Okita. The award is presented by Canada Goose.

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures has unveiled a killer lineup of programming for fall 2024, including in-person appearances from Rita Moreno, Sophia Loren, Werner Herzog and more, as well as exciting new screening events and a special free admission day on September 29 for the museum’s third anniversary.

Herzog will present a new 4K restoration of the documentary “Burden of Dreams,” about the making of his masterpiece “Fitzcarraldo,” on September 7. Moreno will appear in conversation October 17, followed by a screening of a 70mm print of Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins’ “West Side Story.” Loren will appear November 7 and 8 as part of the screening series Sophia Loren: La Diva di Napoli (running November 7 to 30), which celebrates her 90th birthday.

Composer Laura Karpman is coming off perhaps her most prolific and celebrated year to date. In 2023, she not only boasted more than a half-dozen projects but converted two of them into major award nominations. Her musical score for the Cord Jefferson feature “American Fiction” starring Jeffrey Wright landed Karpman her first Academy Award nomination. And her score for the documentary feature from director Stephen Kijak, “Rock Hudson: All That Heaven Allowed” produced her eighth Emmy nomination (she’s won once). “I’m really, really busy right now,” she says with a knock-on-wood smile. “It’s a very good time.” Watch the exclusive video interview with Karpman above.

Karpman is no stranger to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having scored the music to the Disney+ series, “What If…?” and “The Marvels.”

The fourth Captain America film stars Anthony Mackie as flying superhero Sam Wilson, formerly known as Cap’s sidekick the Falcon. Mackie takes the mantle over from Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers, who starred in the previous three “Captain America” movies and the four “Avengers” movies.

This time around, Sam is greeted by Harrison Ford’s U.S. President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, who wants to make Captain America a U.S. agent. The action heats up quickly as the superhero stops a would-be assassin at the White House. As previously confirmed, Ford’s Thunderbolt Ross will indeed, be transforming into the Red Hulk in the film.

The teaser then flashes between shots of Ellie (Bella Ramsey) screaming and Tommy (Gabriel Luna) shooting into the snow before it offers glimpses of new horrors to come. Isabela Merced, who plays Ellie’s love interest Dina, can be seen on the verge of crying, Jeffrey Wright pulls out a gun as Washington Liberation Front leader Isaac Dixon and Ellie screams once again as a Clicker lunges for her.

Humanitas has announced nominations for the 2024 Humanitas Prize in nine juried categories, including TV, film and documentary fields. Noms in the comedy field include “Hacks,” “The Simpsons,” “Girls5eva” and “Act Your Age,” while drama entrants include “The Crown,” “The Morning Show,” “Station 19” and “Black Cake.”

The San Quentin Film Festival — the first-ever film festival held inside a prison — has named its inaugural industry jury, which includes Jeffrey Wright, Billy Crudup, Mary-Louise Parker and more.

The festival, taking place Oct. 10 and 11 at the San Quentin Rehabilitation Center in northern California, will highlight short films and pitches from current and formerly incarcerated filmmakers in front of a jury made up of entertainment industry artists and executives. Separately, an “inside jury” made up of currently incarcerated people will judge narrative and documentary feature films about the prison experience made by filmmakers who have never served prison time.

Actors on the industry jury include Wright, Crudup, Parker and Kathy Najimy.

Directors on the jury include Elegance Bratton, Taylor Hackford, Lynn Novick, Greg Kwedar, Jeff Stanzler and Joe Talbot.
