Haikyuu is one of the most celebrated and popular anime in the sports genre. Even a decade after its release, it continues to be relevant. This is especially true with the themes of team play and coordination.
The series stands as an inspiration for several sports anime. It is praised for its well-written and developed characters. So much so that even the Director will vouch for it.

In a recent interview, Susumu Mitsunaka revealed his favorite character from the show. Unsurprisingly, it isn’t Shōyō Hinata or Yū Nishinoya but Ryūnosuke Tanaka.
His reasons for picking the character may seem absurd to most fans but it’d make sense. Especially when we think about how it ties well to the core themes of the series. By and by, the series has excelled in its portrayal of teamplay and coordination.

Most animation studios are in the limelight for a bad reason. Be it pacing or inauthenticity, anime is being heavily criticized. This is especially true for Junji Ito’s magnum opus Uzumaki. With its botched visuals and inauthentic adaptation, One Piece animator couldn’t help but rant. This is especially true regarding the last few episodes of the series.

Blue Lock was all the rage with its novel take on the sports genre. From its sales to its positive reception, it seemed more than promising. With its second installment, however, things are going downhill. Especially with the series’ drop in quality that had fans calling it a PowerPoint presentation. There is a solid reason for this blunder nonetheless.

The awful animation had several fans expressing their utter disappointment in the franchise. While overpromising and underdelivering isn’t uncommon, 8bit Studio’s failure stands as a testimony to that. However, there’s more to it than meets the eye, especially with the studio’s priorities. This only proves that they won’t be ridding themselves of the PowerPoint stereotype anytime soon.

Many sports anime are cursed with severe inaccuracies in the sports they are portraying. The players in the anime end up gaining supernatural powers when the world of sports relies solely on hard work. One recent sports anime has come under the spotlight for the same curse and it’s sadly Blue Lock. While it is generally an enjoyable show, it has wild inaccuracies that most fans are picking up on now. Some argue that the mangaka has never even watched a football match. Does the mangaka need prior knowledge of the sport they write about to make it a good anime?

Gintama is the epitome of comedy anime, and Hideaki Sorachi often tests the boundaries of censorship and copyrights with it. The mangaka cares little about how it will affect hs series as long as the episode is funny and he gets to attack the anime staff with his clever jabs.
From Dragon Ball and Naruto to One Piece, Gintama has parodied some of the biggest names in the anime world. In fact, Sorachi is not afraid of calling out animation staff, Bandai Namco, and even superiors in the company through Gintoki. Gintama does not break the fourth wall because it simply does not exist in the series.

This column addresses a universal truth in regard to being an anime fan: an anime backlog is quite the powerful beast. Many of us have one, where we amass more and more content we have designated in the "planning to watch" category. How and why it takes so long to actually address this task varies from person to person, but the gratification of finally allocating the time is really quite splendid. If you have ever seen any sports anime, such as the recent “Haikyuu!!” or “Kuroko's Basketball” for example, you probably realize that the Japanese treat them much like shonen, with the protagonists meeting stronger and stronger opponents, losing, training, winning and again from the beginning, along with the flashbacks during battle that present the background of the various characters appearing in the series. Furthermore, presenting aspects that are mundane in sports, like a dribble or a rebound as deeds of epic proportions on occasion, will probably make you wonder if the creators of such series have any clue about the sport they deal with, or if they know something only utmost professionals do. “Blue Lock” definitely follows the same path, by adding, however, a number of elements that could be described as dystopian, which, in the end, make it stand out.

Twitch subscriptions are about to get a lot cheaper for people who don’t live in the United States.
“Regardless of where you are in the world, a Tier 1 subscription to a Twitch channel costs $4.99. However, over the next few months that’s set to change, and Twitch subs are getting cheaper for the vast majority of people outside the US. Twitch has announced the introduction of local subscription pricing…”

A new survey by YouGov shows that some people think they can take on a grizzly bear in a one-on-one fight.
“Since many animals never cross paths in the wild, and pitting them against each other for sport is generally frowned upon, deciding which ones would win in a fight mainly happens in a hypothetical realm. But in that realm, according to a recent survey by data company YouGov, people think elephants are the top dog.”

Director Shunsuke Tada and writer Noburo Takagi adapted Tadoshi’s Fugimaki 30 volume sport manga (firstly serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump) into a three season anime series that aired from 2012 to 2015 and they did it wholeheartedly. “Kuroko’s Basketball” is the latest, not to mention the most exceptional addition to the sport anime genre that makes up a “Slam Dunk” (1993) for the 2010’s.
Tetsuya Kuroko is doe-eyed. A boy of not great physic. He is a phantom. A shadow in search of a light. At a first glance, Kuroko seems to be the good samaritan of high school basketball teams, either it is the great Teiko Junior High School team, also known as the Generation of Miracles, either the talented but struggling team of Seirin High. Although his motives aren’t vicious at all, Kuroko is a parasite looking for a host in order his exceptional and mysterious qualification in basketball to shine.

Netflix is adding a total of 18 new movies and TV series to its library over the next seven days. While that’s not the biggest haul of fresh additions ever, especially after everything that dropped on the platform during the first week of January, it still contains a bunch of must-see titles, including both original content and newly licensed films, that you’ll want to check out.
Monday kicks things off with hard-hitting documentary Crack and French comedy-drama The Intouchables. On Tuesday, meanwhile, the fourth season of British series Last Tango in Halifax debuts. Wednesday then delivers a couple of titles for crime enthusiasts – 2017 thriller An Imperfect Murder (also known as The Private Life of a Modern Woman) starring Sienna Miller and Alec Baldwin and documentary Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer.

The first month of a new year is a good time to make a new impression. And that’s just what Netflix seems set on doing with its list of new releases for January 2021.
The streamer is coming out strong with a third season of Cobra Kai, formerly of YouTube Premium. The next installment in Daniel Larusso and Johnny Lawrence’s story is set to arrive…eventually. Netflix has not unveiled a released date yet but it will be during this month. While Cobra Kai is the highlight among Netflix’ original series, it’s not the only one by a long shot. Last year’s fun Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous returns for a second season on Jan. 22 and it will be accompanied by Fate: The Winx Saga. Also, if you’re a fan of things that will one day be .gif’ed to death, the Nicolas Cage-hosted History of Swear Words drops on Jan.

January is usually referred to as the theatrical industry’s dumping ground, where projects destined to fail are shoved out into the world to die a slow and painful death at the box office. Obviously, next month could see almost every new release face a similar fate as business is still showing no signs of recovery, but Netflix are looking to buck the trend and rehabilitate January’s reputation as a safe haven for fresh content, and the streaming service have some major original movies and TV shows on the horizon.
The most exciting without a doubt is History of Swear Words, which sees Nicolas Cage hosting a six-episode series that delves into the origins and multiple uses of profanity. Anyone who doesn’t have their curiosity immediately piqued by the idea of Hollywood’s most manic and memeable actor fronting a show where the episodes are titled “F*ck...
