Fifteen years after he ran away from home, an effeminate young man, Kambili, returns at the invitation of his sister, Nneka. His memories include being bullied as a child by his classmates, rejection by by his mother and sister, as well as an adolescent homosexual love affair with his friend Ifediora. But try as he might to fit in and to reestablish an affair with Ifediora, things have not really changed; the taboo against his homosexuality is still crushing. In the end, Kambili remains steadfast in his acceptance of himself as an effeminate gay man.
