Strength comes in different forms, and two new films with Irish actress Saoirse Ronan tell the tale. In Steve McQueen’s high-octane World War II drama “Blitz,” set in an embattled London, Ronan is Rita, a single mother searching for her young son who’s disappeared from a train ostensibly taking children to safety in the British countryside. As bombs fall and subway stations flood, Rita is just about the fiercest thing in London, abandoning the bomb factory where she works to find her boy at all costs.
In Nora Fingscheidt’s “The Outrun,” on the other hand, her character of Rona is an alcoholic who summons up the power to fight her demons by turning to the solitude of a remote island off the coast of Scotland.
“I’m delighted that they’ve come out when they have, especially because I have been away for a while,” said Ronan,...

Throughout her already prolific career, producer/actor Margot Robbie has proven herself to have a taste that's as discerning as it is eclectic. Most actors attempt to demonstrate their ability to take on as large of a range of projects as possible, yet the demands of the business and marketing sides of the film industry usually see them typecast in some form, usually in a genre if not a specific type of role. This is why Robbie's career is worth pointing out for how diverse it is; she's been able to find a niche for herself that has allowed her to easily move between action films, dramas, period pieces like "Mary Queen Of Scots," comedies, genre flicks, and prestige pics, all while growing her A-list status and not being relegated to either an awards-bait character actor or a paycheck-bait comic book movie star. As a producer, she's demonstrated a steady...

There are many different ways to approach acting, and sometimes it can be helpful for performers to mirror their roles in reality to really get into character. Taken to its furthest lengths, this is known as Method acting, a process that numerous actors have used to help identify with the people they portray. It can occasionally be a little unnerving when actors stay in-character after the director yells cut, especially when they're playing creepy characters, but it can be a truly helpful tool. Sometimes just a little Method goes a long way, like in the case of Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie on the 2018 historical drama "Mary Queen of Scots."
In the film, which our review called a "progressive but stale period drama" that was elevated by its performances and cinematography, Ronan's Mary is the Queen of Scotland, but she's constantly in danger because her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I...

“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” is back for Season 2, and this time around there are a number of new characters to keep straight. With Sauron revealed to be Halbrand at the end of Season 1, the chess pieces are now fully in the open and the Dark Lord is masquerading as yet another new character this season in order to try and forge the titular rings. We’ve also got drama with the dwarves, in-fighting amongst the elves and that guy who most definitely is Gandalf is wandering the desert with a harfoot.
Absent in Season 2 is Nazanin Boniadi who played Bronwyn, who exited the show. But new to the cast are Ciaran Hinds, Rory Kinnear and plenty more filling out this prequel series that tackles J.R.R. Tolkien’s Second Age. Check out our complete “Rings of Power” Season 2 cast and character guide below.

The Scottish star talks about his forthcoming role in David Ireland’s new play in Edinburgh – and why making an Irn Bru ad counts as national service
The actor Jack Lowden, 34, is Scottish in every respect, except that he was born in England. His parents soon returned the family across the border, where he was enrolled in Scottish Youth Theatre and, at the age of 19, bagged his first major role, the lead in the National Theatre of Scotland’s 2010 revival of the Olivier award-winning Black Watch.
Lowden would go on to win an Olivier of his own, for the role of Oswald in the Almeida’s 2013 production of Ibsen’s Ghosts. Saoirse Ronan married her Mary Queen of Scots co-star in a secret ceremony.
According to People, the actress wed her longtime partner, actor Jack Lowden, in an intimate affair in Scotland in the past week. Irish Independent was first to break the news. (The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to reps for Ronan and Lowden.)
The couple had a civil wedding at the Edinburgh Central Registrar’s Office, located at the City Chambers. The report mentions that only a “handful” of their closest friends attended the nuptials and “all guests were sworn to secrecy.”
The actors met while filming the 2018 historical drama, in which Ronan played the Queen of Scots, while Lowden starred alongside her as Lord Darnley, her second husband. Their dynamic turned romantic shortly after getting to know each other on set. While the Irish actress tried to keep her then-blossoming romance private, Page Six reported in December...

A postscript to this philosophical effort explains that an unknown Oxford don visited Sigmund Freud’s London home shortly before his death in 1939. What if, the film asks, it had been C.S. Lewis? Well, then we might have had a conversation a little like this confection — although probably considerably sharper.
Freud (Anthony Hopkins) was a prominent atheist: not that that protected him from persecution by the Nazis for his Jewish roots, driving him to flee Vienna to London with his family. Matthew Goode’s Lewis, meanwhile, lost and rediscovered his faith after the early death of his mother and the trauma of World War I. As a second World War looms, both men reckon with its cost and their own regrets. Like One Night In Miami or Mary Queen Of Scots, this therefore uses an imaginary meeting to explore both men’s lives and work, but somehow to less than satisfying effect.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s turn in Bullet Train has led to theories he’s going to play Bond next. But do actors who play Bond-like characters go on to actually play 007? We take a look.
At the time of writing, at least, there’s much speculation about Aaron Taylor-Johnson and his connection to the James Bond franchise. In March, a British newspaper with a big red masthead spread the rumour that the actor is secretly being lined up to play 007, taking over from Daniel Craig.
It’s a rumour so persistent that Taylor-Johnson has started to get a bit cross when ‘The Bond Question’ is brought up in interviews. When asked by an Associated Press reporter about the whole matter, Taylor-Johnson looked down at his feet, as though trying to repress some terrifying wellspring of anger, before abruptly marching off with a chirpy, “Alright, have a good one!”

Every year, there are always a few names who are in line for some awards glory after years of being the bridesmaids. Some of those names still haven’t had their moment, such as Glenn Close at the Oscars. But, this year, the Screen Actors’ Guild Awards could finally dish out some of those moments to some key names. We’re going to take a look at some of those names in just a tick but, first, a ground rule: we are only looking at people who have never won any type of SAG award, be that an individual gong or a Best Ensemble prize. There are some names this year who have won the latter but not the former, such as Bradley Cooper and Mark Ruffalo. We won’t be looking at those guys. Instead, we are looking at the pure SAG-free thespians. Here they are.

Four-time Oscar nominee and indie darling Saoirse Ronan revealed in a recent Harper’s Bazaar UK interview that she’s keen to star in a comedy soon, referencing Paul Feig’s “Bridesmaids” and the Larry David-created sitcoms “Seinfeld” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm” as her favorite comedic projects.

Before Margot Robbie was Barbie, she was Harley Quinn, Naomi Lapaglia, Tonya Harding, and many more characters. There's no doubt Robbie loves her job as an actor, and while tackling the role of an iconic children's toy wasn't initially on her career bucket list, it's clear she's happy she took a chance with the role.
A month before the highly anticipated July 2023 release of "Barbie," Robbie spoke to Vogue about how playing the role never even crossed her mind. "It wasn't that I ever wanted to play Barbie, or dreamt of being Barbie, or anything like that," she explained. "This is going to sound stupid, but I really didn't even think about playing Barbie until years into developing the project."
And while "Barbie" might arguably be Robbie's most hyped-up movie in her career so far, it's by no means the only role she's slayed. Take a look back at Robbie's best movies below.

The summer’s most anticipated comedy is Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. After her two box office misfires of 2022 — “Amsterdam” and “Babylon” — Robbie is on the cusp of her first critical darling and giant financial hit in a long while. Two of her acclaimed performances brought her Academy Award nominations in the previous decade, so with “Barbie” opening in theaters, let’s look back at Robbie’s two Oscar races.
Her first Oscar nomination came in 2018 in the Best Actress category for her performance as Tonya Harding in “I, Tonya.” Written by Steven Rogers and directed by Craig Gillespie, the film tells the true-life story of Harding’s rise in the U.S. Figure Skating Championships and how everything came crashing down. Robbie had been received Oscar buzz for at least one of her movies before this — Martin Scorsese’s “The Wolf of Wall Street,...

Saoirse Ronan revealed last September to People that she tried and failed to film a cameo in the upcoming “Barbie” movie, which is directed by her “Lady Bird” and “Little Women” filmmaker Greta Gerwig. It turns out Gerwig eyed even more “Barbie” cameos, including one that would’ve reunited her and Ronan with Timothée Chalamet. The Oscar nominee also appeared in both of Gerwig’s previous solo directorial features.
“Well, it was always going to have to be like a sort of smaller thing because she was actually producing at the time, which I am so proud of her for,” Gerwig recently told CinemaBlend of having to scrap Ronan’s cameo. “And of course, it’s brilliant. But it was going to be a specialty cameo. I was also going to do a specialty cameo with Timmy. Both of them couldn’t do it and I was so annoyed. But I love them so much.

Tudor, or not Tudor. That is the question in “Firebrand,” a revisionist royal portrait of Henry VIII’s last wife, Katherine Parr (played here by Alicia Vikander), that features all the pageantry you’d expect from a lavish costume drama, while showing the a historical audacity to call “Time’s Up” on the gluttonous king (Jude Law). Never mind that Henry VIII died — of very different causes than the movie depicts — all of 476 years ago. When it comes to art, there’s no statute of limitations on taking toxic masculinity to task, which can be both encouraging (since history has excused no shortage of monsters) and frustrating.
There’s a big difference between exposing the truth and rewriting what came before to suit a contemporary political agenda, the way “Firebrand” does. Liberally adapted from Elizabeth Fremantle’s fast-and-loose historical fiction “The Queen’s Gambit,” director Karim Aïnouz’s tony yet dull...

Neil Forsyth’s The Gold is a true crime drama with a distinctive perspective. As much as it’s about the cat-and-mouse chase between the robbers of £26 million’s worth of gold bullion in November 1983, and the special task force trying to catch them, it’s also about the British class system. Over six episodes (airing weekly on BBC One and available as a box-set on BBC iPlayer), Forsyth tells a story about villains on both sides of the social divide and the entrenched systems protecting those at the top. His London is just as veined with establishment corruption, freemasonry and snobbery as it is with armed robbers, hooky fences and locals who keep their mouths shut for fear of reprisal.
The ensemble drama covers the period from the 1983 robbery, then the largest gold heist in British history, to the investigation and sentencing of select ring leaders. The story, as the newspapers show,...

Margot Robbie is excited for the future of her iconic character Harley Quinn.

“It makes me so happy because I said from the very beginning, all I want is for Harley Quinn to be one of those characters, the way Macbeth or Batman always gets passed from great actor to great actor,” Robbie said. “And I feel like in not so many cases are they female characters.”

Actress Margot Robbie poses for Chanel's "Coco Neige" sports fashion collection, photographed by designer Karl Lagerfeld:
"This shoot was one of the greatest experiences of my career," said Robbie. "The energy and vibe on set was so wonderful and collaborative. One of the first things Karl Lagerfeld said to me was that we never need to take ourselves too seriously.
"He has such a creative mind and he knows exactly what he wants and the minute he captured it, we were moving onto the next shot.
"It was amazing. Karl Lagerfeld is a creative mastermind. I already knew he was a genius but to be able to spend time with him in person, I now know he is also just a wonderful human being."

As the credits roll at the end of the season two premiere of "Bridgerton," you may notice a card dedicating the episode to the memory of Marc Pilcher. While you might not recognize his name right off the bat, Pilcher was instrumental in creating the vibrant visual world of "Bridgerton" and setting the tone we all know and love.
Pilcher was the hair and makeup designer for the first season of the Netflix series, creating distinctive looks for the characters and for the entire heightened, Regency-romance world. In fact, he and the rest of the "Bridgerton" hair and makeup team won the Emmy for outstanding period and/or character hairstyling at the 2021 Creative Arts Emmys. His résumé extended over two decades and included work on many notable projects, from "Downton Abbey" (both the TV series and the first movie) and the live-action "Beauty and the Beast" to multiple Star Wars movies and much more.
