The ending of the film is not the original that was planned. During the shooting of the end sequence, a key cast member was unavailable, so the ending had to be reworked. The director considers the new ending to be better, and more fitting, than the original that was scripted.
During the scene where the grandfather is singing to his grandson on the porch, the song he sings in Italian was improvised. The melody from that song was used by the composer to create the musical theme for the film.
The church used in the movie is St. Stanislaus in Cleveland's Slavic Village. It is the church that director Michael Eric was married at.
