(Welcome to Best Actor Ever, an ongoing series where we explore the careers and performances of the greatest performers to ever grace the screen.)
There is not an actor in the history of moving pictures who has been more egregiously taken for granted by her industry than Jennifer Jason Leigh.
Critics have always had her back. The New York Times' Janet Maslin got it from the jump when she singled Leigh out as "the only thing worth seeing" in her film debut "Eyes of a Stranger." The better-than-average 1981 slasher film set the tone for Leigh's career in that she plays a victim. Her character is a blind-deaf mute whose condition was brought on by being kidnapped and raped at an early age. The 19-year-old Leigh projects sweetness and innocence, but this young woman is all serrated edges. Because she isn't just a victim. She's a survivor.
Roger Ebert was also an early admirer of Leigh,...

Now the Oscar race can really begin. The year’s biggest breakout indie hit, A24’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” led the pack of nominees for the 95th Academy Awards that were announced this morning, with 11 nods, including Best Picture, Director, Actress, Supporting Actress (x2) and Supporting Actor. It was followed by Netflix’s “All Quiet on the Western Front” and Searchlight’s “The Banshees of Inisherin” with nine apiece. Warner Bros.’ “Elvis” picked up eight nods and Universal’s “The Fabelmans” took seven.
Riz Ahmed and Allison Williams announced the nominees live on Tuesday from the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. It was the first in-person nomination announcement with press in attendance since before the pandemic.
As Steve Pond, TheWrap’s Executive Editor, Awards, noted in his final predictions, with the Academy bigger and more international than ever before, it was likely they would throw several surprises.

Star Wars Resistance Season 2
So it looks like “Breakout” is indeed the second and final part to last week’s episode, and taken together, “The Missing Agent” and “Breakout” are, as usual, a fine, fairly mediocre pair of episodes that don’t do much but provide a generic, average adventure. There really is so little here to get into–every issue and conflict is solved just as you would expect, mostly because characters verbalize their ideas and plans (mostly in really bad “comedic” scenes), then just… execute them, with very few problems and even fewer moments of tension.
Nothing is bad per se, but everything is so uninspired. The only moment that seems to possess any spark is when Kaz stuns Commander Pyre.

MrBeast, the uber-generous YouTube star -- and Streamy 'Breakout Creator' winner -- whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson, has released the trailer for his latest video, which may be one of his biggest stunts to date.
The clip, dropping on Thursday at 4 pm Et, boasts a familiar -- yet compelling -- premise: Donaldson has placed $1 million in single dollar bills inside of a large glass case. Four four contestants will then have to place their hands on the case, with the last one touching the glass at the end of the challenge being crowned winner, and taking home the money.
The video is the fifth part in a series of videos that Donaldson began rolling out in November. Each of those clips featured a similar 'last to...' premise and produced a finalist, who will then go on to compete for the $1 million finale. Previous contests included Last To...

Winner of the Golden Bear at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival — and a bonafide masterpiece that deserves to be mentioned alongside “Parasite,” “Portrait of a Lady on Fire,” “The Irishman,” and the rest of the major new releases this fall — Nadav Lapid’s “Synonyms” is destined to go down as one of the most thrilling, infuriating, and essential movies of 2019. And thanks to distributor Kino Lorber, American audiences won’t have to wait much longer to see it.

We told you back in December about a new critics organization Leja (Latino Entertainment Journalists Association) and they've announced their first year's worth of awards winners. Roma leads with Ten wins. The only other multiple winners were Black Panther (3), If Beale Street Could Talk (3), A Star is Born (2), and Into the Spider-Verse (2). They've mostly they avoided category fraud except in the messy Best Supporting Actor category where they rubberstamped Mahershala Ali. But we'll forgive that since they honored Bradley Cooper as Best Actor and he's been weirdly denied wins all season despite his multiple threat sucess with A Star is Born. The Atari Plug & Play Joystick is meant for people to play at home, but you can take it anywhere with you because the system has been streamlined in a unit that looks like the original Atari joystick controller with a new “arcade-style” button on top of the controller.

Doughlings: Arcade is a throwback to the days of Arkanoid and Breakout but with a modern sensibility when it comes to aesthetics and power-ups. What could have been an average, passable game actually turns out to be a fun, addictive and light-hearted arcade romp with pick up and play gameplay.
The story behind Doughlings is that you are Dr Morpheus, a Doughling who is searching for a cure for all of the other denizens of the Doughling world who have been turned into mindless monsters. Naturally his cure involves chucking a ball at them to sort them out. Good.
The visuals, music and sound effects that make up Doughlings reminded me of Peggle, a game I was quite addicted to for a short while a couple of years ago. I mean it as a compliment as the colourful graphics and gentle, toe-tapping music are almost slightly hypnotic as they colour...

The truth is the priority. That is the concern. Whatever it takes. (from Twin Galaxie’s official statement on stripping Billy Mitchell of his high scores.)
I saw Billy Mitchell in person last year at an arcade convention in Atlanta, Georgia. It was summertime, and so it was hot. Amidst the seething crowd of t-shirts and shorts, Mitchell wore a white suit draped atop his lanky 6’ 2” frame. A stars-and-stripes tie peeked out between the lapels. He looked like a cross between Tom Wolfe and Colonel Sanders. I watched as he posed for pictures with fans, most of whom knew him as that guy from the film “King of Kong,” a 2007 documentary by Seth Gordon about his tete-a-tete with Steve Wiebe for the world record high score in “Donkey Kong.”

You’ve probably never heard of “Breakout,” Columbia Pictures’ 1975 prison-break movie starring Charles Bronson. That’s to be expected — it’s a ‘B’ movie at best — but its successful release was one of the most important in film distribution history. Why? Because “Breakout” was released on 1,300 screens simultaneously, with national TV advertising. At that time, TV ads for movies were all but unheard of, and releases tended to be either initially exclusive in downtown theaters, or shown in different territories at different times.
Despite predictions that it was a waste of money, “Breakout” was an immediate hit. That convinced Universal to do the same thing for “Jaws” less than a month later, and that film’s massive success remains the most significant change in exhibition history. By creating the notion of a shared experience for 2 million people, it created the template for how most studio features are released today.

It was an incredibly tough scrolling shooter with a cool 60s spy theme. We take a look back at Namco's Rolling Thunder...
Whether you were in Indianapolis or Ingoldmells, you were pretty much guaranteed to see a game by Namco in any 1980s arcade. Increasingly tired-looking Galaxian, Galaga, and Pole Position machines were still kicking around at the end of the decade, while Pac-Man remains one of the most famous names in gaming today. But there was one great Namco game that didn't quite have the same lasting impact as the iconic Pac-Man, or even its once-popular space shooting games, yet managed to exert a quiet influence both on the company's later games and the industry as a whole.
Rolling Thunder appeared towards the end of 1986, and its design was completely different from anything else in arcades at the time. Where most coin-ops had a science...

With time travel, “meta humans” and knowing nods galore, The CW’s Arrow spin-off The Flash “is the most comic book show, I think, that’s ever been made,” DC Comics’ Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns declares.
Related Arrow Season 3 Premiere: An ‘Emotional’ Kiss, Two Big Entrances, Amell vs. Amell and More
The new CW drama (premiering Tuesday at 8/7c) “embraces the superhero lore just fully on,” Johns continues. “There are references to Grodd, and that’s not just a reference. There’s plans for all sorts of crazy stuff.”

This weekend sees the release of Escape from Planet Earth, a family film that follows a hapless alien who’s trapped on the dangerous Planet Earth, and his attempt to escape a horrible fate at the hands of the humans. Brendan Fraser provides the voice of Scorch Supernova, the blue-skinned extraterrestrial hero, in a role that sees the loveable actor continue his run of family-friendly movies after Furry Vengeance and Inkheart, and as an aside to his more independent, serious fare such as Gimme Shelter and Breakout.
When we spoke with the actor we expected a straight-forward interview. How very wrong we were; the following conversation includes some singing, a bit of ice cream tasting, and a dash of Charlie Chaplin, proving why Fraser is the go-to guy if you’re looking to give your movie some spark. Read on on and enjoy.
