Contrary to what many people assume, most forms of film criticism are indifferent to whether or not the ideas present within a movie were placed there intentionally. The only “rule” is that the critic should be able to justify their personal interpretation with examples taken from whatever is being examined. After all, art discourse usually says more about the people discussing the work than the artist themself, and that’s why I don’t mind it if you read this article and end up thinking that I’m reading too much into a silly slasher flick.
Naturally, the slasher in question is Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan. And with the film celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, this seems like the perfect opportunity to discuss why I believe this over-hated sequel deserves to be re-evaluated as an oddly fascinating (and likely accidental) homage to Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

“Barren Land,” from Spain’s Albert Pintó, director of Netflix global blockbusters “Money Heist,” “Berlin” and “Nowhere,” have been snapped up by Spain’s Film Factory Entertainment.
From an original idea by producer Alvaro Ariza, “Barren Land” (“Tierra de Nadie”) is penned by Fernando Navarro, one of Spain’s go-to screenwriters whose credits include Netflix hits “Below Zero” and “Veronica.”
Film Factory will launch world sales on “Barren Land,” as it builds a powerful slate of upscale commercial packages. Sony Pictures Entertainment Iberia will release the film in Spain next year.
Now with principal photography underway in Cadiz, southern Spain, the suspense thriller captures the devastation of friendships, lives and the whole province by a rampant drug trade, action also expanding to the Straits of Gibraltar.
“An ode to friendship, focusing on three characters whose paths diverge due to the longstanding situation in the Southern part of Spain,” “Barren Land” turns on Mateo “El Gallego,...

“The Vanishing Soldier” is a coming of age story, as breathless as its protagonist: the kind of film that will make cinephiles of seventeen-year-olds. Which is one of the reasons that Dani Rosenberg, the film’s 43-year-old director, is delighted to be in Locarno, where the film, sold by Intramovies, is screening in main competition, and has just got a trailer, and poster, shared in exclusivity with Variety.
“We had options for other festivals,” Rosenberg told Variety at the Swiss fest.
“But Locarno is the best place because it’s a festival that admires films and not topics. We want the film to be first seen as cinema; not as an Israeli story about conflict.”
So what cinema inspired you?
“My first image when I was writing the script was Buster Keaton. I imagined the chases like slapstick chases, like “Cops,” from his era. And obviously, the ‘70s paranoia films,...

As befitting its status as one of the world’s biggest companies, every now and then Amazon likes to take a big swing with its Prime Video originals. With its list of new releases for April 2023, the streamer is taking one of its biggest swings yet.
Though it’s not quite as vast or expensive as fellow Prime Video series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Citadel (premiering April 28) is a massive, massive undertaking. Starring Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, this spy series is described as “an expansive and groundbreaking global event comprising a mothership series and several local language satellite series.” This means that the Russo Brothers-produced project will eventually feature several spinoffs in multiple countries and languages around the world. Neat-o!

Prime Video is hoping to launch its own extended franchise universe in April with the premiere of international spy series “Citadel” from the minds of the Russo Brothers. Our friends at The Remake Co. a label under the FilmSharks sales banner out of Buenos Aires brought to our attention that they sold the Spanish remakes rights to the Uruguayan Fantasy RomCom Ghosting Gloria. A single 30-year-old who has never had an orgasm, finally finds her ideal lover but the only caveat is that he doesn't inhabit the world of the living. Ghosting Gloria was fun but what tickles me so is that these rights were acquired by Igancio G. Cucucovich’s Mother Superior Films. We've know Cucucovich and their work primarily in the realm of horror films. They produced Gustavo Hernandez’s upcoming Big Bad Wolves remake Lobo Feroz, Virus-32, and You Shall Not Sleep (No Dormiras). They are most definitely not romcoms. ...

Buenos Aires-based FilmSharks subsidiary The Remake Company has closed a remake deal with Italy’s Marco Belardi and his new label Bamboo Prod. for Ariel Winograd’s latest film “Today We Fix the World” (“Hoy se Arregla el Mundo”).
Produced by powerhouse shingle Patagonik, the family dramedy was picked up by Netflix for several key territories after its theatrical release by Disney’s Star early this year.
Mexico’s BH5 has also acquired the remake rights and is about to produce its version while talks are underway with Korean and French companies, said FilmSharks founder and CEO, Guido Rud. Winograd is already a known quantity in Italy. His last film “Ten Days Without Mom” topped the box office in Italy when it was released.
Dramedy stars Leonardo Sbaraglia from “Wild Tales” and “Pain and Glory” who finds out that he’s not the biological father of the nine-year-old boy at home.

Heaven’s Grate: Keshales Settles for Watered Down Tropes in English Debut
Nearly a decade ago, directors Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado promised to usher in a new dawn of genre-flavored Israeli cinema with their first two offerings, Rabies (2010) and the somewhat controversial Big Bad Wolves (2013). Both have been wooed by English language filmmaking, pursing their own solo projects as director with Papushado unveiling Gunpowder Milkshake and Keshales offering up South of Heaven (which features Papushado as screenwriter alongside Kai Mark). Marrying a clutch of familiar narrative tropes, including the veritable Hitchcockian ‘wrong man’ syndrome and cancer melodrama, ‘nice guys’ may finish last, but they make it to the end credits—-unfortunately, there’s not enough characterization to care by the time we get there.…...

Any time a guy in a fancy coat says, “I’ll go ahead and explain. I’m a businessman,” it’s safe to assume you’re in for a parade of cliches. Or it would be, if the malicious parole officer and cancer patient wife weren’t already a dead giveaway of the kind of humorless melodrama on display in “South of Heaven,” starring Jason Sudeikis and Evangeline Lilly. It’s too bad that television’s favorite nice guy had to hone his Southern accent in such a dirge of a crime drama — it makes his dopey ex-con Jimmy feel like Ted Lasso’s charmless no-good cousin.
Filming for “South of Heaven” took place in March 2020; just before the pandemic upended the movie business (and everything else), and a few months before the first season of “Ted Lasso” debuted, which soon became an Emmy-winning hit. Had Sudeikis known what success lay in store for him,...

With the Emmy-decorated, too-many-people’s-favorite-show-to-count triumph of his role on “Ted Lasso,” Jason Sudeikis has joined the rarefied club of all-stops-out comedians who make the transition to becoming full-on dramatic actors. That said, “Ted Lasso” is a drama streaked with comedy. So you could say that Sudeikis, for all the adoration and acclaim he’s earned, still hasn’t quite entered the fabled upper echelon of the “All comedians want to play Hamlet — but only a few get to do it” stratosphere.
That may explain why he signed on to play the lead role in “South of Heaven,” a seedy indie romantic crackpot noir, set in Texas, that casts him as a convict doing all he can to stay out of trouble. At first, the movie seems like a variation on “Straight Time,” the 1978 Dustin Hoffman drama that’s still one of the most authentic films of its era about...

Expansive Paris-based media group Mediawan has picked up international sales rights to the Jerusalem-set ultra-orthodox drama “The Rabbi,” which participates in this year’s Series Mania Forum at its Co-Pro Pitching Sessions.
Abuses of power aren’t unique to any one nationality, gender, sexual orientation or religion. With “The Rabbi,” celebrated filmmaker Eytan Fox proposes a fictionalized drama inspired by a true story which shocked Jerusalem’s ultra-orthodox Jewish community that proves that such abuses can happen almost anywhere.
“The Rabbi” turns on a powerful and well-known university professor from Jerusalem’s ultra-orthodox community who uses his position to influence his male students into physical relationships. Although the students are all in their 20s and the relationships consensual, there is uproar when the truth comes out, both regarding the Rabbi engaging in relationships with his subordinates and the fact that this superstar clergyman is a closeted gay man.

Gunpowder Milkshake tells the story of Sam (Karen Gillan), who was only 12 years old when her mother Scarlet (Lena Headey), an elite assassin, was forced to abandon her. Sam was raised by The Firm, the ruthless crime syndicate her mother worked for. Now, 15 years later, Sam has followed in her mother’s footsteps and grown into a fierce hit-woman. Here’s the kind of movie that “Gunpowder Milkshake” is. It’s a rogue-assassin-hunting-down-the-assassins-who-are-hunting-her thriller, starring a charismatically affectless Karen Gillan as Sam, the rogue in question. At one point she finds herself in a car with an 8-year-old girl, Emily (Chloe Coleman), who she has just rescued from a kidnapping. She’s teaching the girl how to maneuver around an underground parking garage, propping her up in the driver’s seat and letting her take the wheel, when they’re confronted by several vehicles full of hooligans brandishing automatic weapons.
What follows is a cat-and-mouse car chase. But does Sam take control and put Emily in the passenger seat? Of course not. The girl, with one minute of driving lessons behind her, keeps on driving, with Sam issuing instructions (“Don’t worry about the bullets! Reverse…Now! Hard left! Put it in drive! That’s it! Hard left — Go go go!

French studio Gaumont’s Cannes player “Aline, The Voice of Love,” freely inspired by the life of Canadian pop star Céline Dion, was partially filmed in Andalusian provinces of Málaga and Almería in June 2019.
Directed, co-written and starring France’s Valérie Lemercier, “Aline” screened July 13 out of competition as part of Cannes’ Official Selection, earning a full five-minute standing ovation.
Co-produced by Gaumont, Rectangle Productions, TF1 and De L’Huile in France, Caramel Films in Canada and Belgium’s Belga Productions, the two-week Andalusian shoot of the film was serviced by Áralan Cinema Services.
“The climate and light of Andalusia helped the producers to set scenes that took place in Brazil, Italy, Monaco and Las Vegas,” said Gonzalo Bendala, co-founder of production house Áralan Films, whose international film servicing label, Áralan Cinema Services, launched in 2019.

What if you could go back to the ’90s and early ’00s and remake all those self-consciously absurdist, ironically nihilistic action thrillers, but with women in the lead? You’d probably get something a lot like “Gunpowder Milkshake,” a pop-culture pastiche that feels persistently retro — and not in a good way.
Navot Papushado’s follow-up to his Israeli cult fave “Big Bad Wolves” sure looks promising: Lena Headey, Michelle Yeoh, Carla Gugino and Angela Bassett lead an assassin group called the Librarians, who serve as mentors for up-and-coming hitwoman Sam.
Is it absolutely thrilling to see female icons in their 40s, 50s and 60s cast as take-no-prisoners badasses? Sure is. Is it totally dispiriting to watch their considerable talents increasingly wasted? Of course.
We do begin with a milkshake, in a 1950s diner, a recurring set that evokes unflattering comparisons to the thoughtfully-conjured vintage darkness of “Riverdale.” Preteen Sam gets...

‘Gunpowder Milkshake’ Review: Karen Gillan Kicks Butt in Kitschy, Colorful Netflix Assassin Actioner
Subtlety isn’t on offer in Navot Papushado’s assassin actioner “Gunpowder Milkshake,” though nearly everything else is, from enough neon lights to make Vegas jealous, a nefarious group of bad men known as “The Firm,” to Karen Gillan beating up baddies with a panda-shaped suitcase, blood the consistency of Jell-o, and an extended sequence involving Michelle Yeoh killing dudes with a chain. These aren’t even the highlights, but simply a brief selection of standouts moments from the Netflix Original, which . Featuring Karen Gillan in a genuinely butt-kicking role, Papushado’s film joins a growing sub-genre of all-female action outings, but its winking sense of humor seems primed to help it stand out.
Set in and around a nameless European city — the film was shot mostly in Germany, but there’s something purposely anonymous about the world Sam (Gillan) and her compatriots and antagonizers alike occupy — “Gunpowder Milkshake” opens...

The first single from the upcoming film “Gunpowder Milkshake” has been released. Composed by Frank Ilfman (“Big Bad Wolves”), “Goonfight at Gutterball Corral” fuses indie-rock with a spaghetti Western style, further mixed with a large orchestra and soprano vocal.
Directed and co-written by Navot Papushado (also known for”Big Bad Wolves”), the film debuts on Netflix on July 14, along with the motion picture soundtrack. “Gunpowder Milkshake” follows Sam (Karen Gilan), a deadly assassin who was abandoned by her mother, Scarlett (Lena Headley) — also an assassin, just deadlier — at 12 years old. Sam is raised by The Firm, a ruthless crime syndicate her mother worked for. Soon enough, Sam is forced to choose between The Firm and protecting the life of an innocent 8-year-old girl, Emily, who gets caught up in the deadly web.
Ilfman chose to create signature motifs for each character that repeat throughout, and remain, like catchy earworms, long after the credits have rolled.

One-half of the duo that brought us recent cult favourites Rabid and Big Bad Wolves, Navot Papushado is certainly hitting the big time, co-writing and directing what looks to be quite the action-packed thrill ride Gunpowder Milkshake. Netflix has released the trailer for its upcoming summer action tentpole “Gunpowder Milkshake,” starring Karen Gillan. The actress is best known for her role as Nebula in the Marvel Cinematic Universe flicks, plus her performance in two “Jumanji” movies. Gillan plays a third-generation for-hire assassin forced to work in tandem with her estranged mother, played by “Game of Thrones” star Lena Headey.
The women must team up to stop a cycle of violence led by a male-dominated crime syndicate, presided over by the always deliciously nefarious Paul Giamatti. Along the way they encounter a slew of ass-kicking women, played by a veritable embarrassment of riches in Oscar nominee Angela Bassett (“Black Panther”), Michelle Yeoh, and Carla Gugino (“Sin City”).
Here is one of the film’s previous synopses:

In 2013, Navot Papushado got the boost of a lifetime when Quentin Tarantino plugged the Israeli director’s “Big Bad Wolves” into the year’s best film. Not bad press at all coming from Mr. Revenge Cinema himself. Papushado hasn’t been up to much since, but Tarantino’s endorsement will get viewers’ attention as his next film hits Netflix this summer.

This very peculiar version of the famous Israeli flick Big Bad Wolves is being filmed in Andalusia by the director of The Silent House. In 2013, the Israeli film Big Bad Wolves, helmed by duo Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado, was victorious at the Sitges Film Festival (as well as many other international gatherings), where it scooped the Best Director Award. A short while later, the legend that is Quentin Tarantino included this title among his favourites from that year. Now, if one were to take a stroll around the spectacular province of Cádiz, one may well stumble upon the cast and crew of Lobo feroz (lit. “Fierce Wolf”), a peculiar reimagining of the aforementioned hit, being helmed by Uruguay’s Gustavo Hernández. This filmmaker has already made forays into the fantastic genre with his previous films: The Silent House (which even got the Hollywood remake treatment), Local God and You.
ScreenDaily shares a behind-the-scenes look at Ferocious Wolf, the Spain-Uruguay Spanish-language remake of Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado’s Israeli thriller Big Bad Wolves, which has just commenced shooting in Cadiz, Spain. Gustavo Hernandez, the Uruguayan director behind Silent House (La Casa Muda) that spawned the Hollywood remake starring Elizabeth Olsen, is behind the camera. “Ferocious Wolf centers on a detective […]...

Without fail, at the start of every year, there’s a lot of chatter about how January is the prime dumping ground for “bad horror,” and I gotta tell you, it really bums me out. Sure, there will always be misfires released in any given month of the year, but as a whole, I love the month of January for horror, simply because it seems like for every dud, there are a few films that really swing for the fences, and you just never know what you’re going to get. And that’s the kind of stuff that keeps me going as a horror fan.

Exclusive: Dallas Sonnier’s Cinestate, the production outfit that also owns horror brand Fangoria, is ramping up its distribution activities and has hired Brandon Hill as VP of acquisitions and distribution.
Based in La, Hill will acquire films for Cinestate, including its horror label Fangoria, for distribution across theatrical and all other platforms.
The Dallas-based company has produced titles including S. Craig Zahler’s Bone Tomahawk, Brawl In Cell Block 99, and Dragged Across Concrete. Since acquiring Fangoria in 2018, it has also produced four titles through that label: Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich, Satanic Panic, and the upcoming Vfw and Castle Freak.
Fangoria distributes some of its titles in-house, and acquires outside produced movies for platform distribution, an effort headed up by Rob Galluzzo in La. Now, the company is looking to expand beyond home entertainment as part of Cinestate’s wider push into theatrical releasing.

Exclusive: I hear that Jason Sudeikis and Evangeline Lilly have been cast in Till Death, the action thriller being helmed by Aharon Keshales, who co-directed 2013 breakout Israeli horror Big Bad Wolves.
In the film, convicted felon Jimmy gets early parole after serving twelve years for armed robbery. Upon his release, he vows to give Annie, his childhood love, now dying from cancer, the best last year of her life – unfortunately it’s not that simple. Keshales penned the script with Navot Papushado and Kai Mark.
The project comes from Dallas-based producers Cinestate and Arts District Entertainment, and is fully financed by London-based Media Finance Capital.
Uphe Content Group has already snapped up world rights to the package. Pic will go into production in January 2020.
SNL grad Sudeikis is making something of a genre departure on this high-octane action pic, following recent drama roles in Kodachrome and Driven, alongside his comedy work.
