Zenigata's Lieutenant Oscar is a parody of The Rose of Versailles (1979)'s female heroine Lady Oscar Francois de Jarjayes, who was a woman in military uniform; in the show Lt Oscar is a law officer with an effeminate look/behaviour. Coming full circle, Lupin had earlier parodied the show in Berusaiyu wa ai ni moeta (1979).
Kiyoshi Kobayashi (Jigen) is the only voice actor from the main cast who worked in the previous three "Lupin III" TV shows.
Fujiko Mine means "mountain peaks of Fuji" in Japanese, a pun on the size of her breasts.
The series is influenced by Monkey Punch's original "Lupin III" manga comic, which was set in the 1960s and had darker and more adult content, and Lupin the Third (1971) (based on the manga but much more toned down).
This is the first "Lupin III" series to not star Arsène Lupin III as the protagonist.
